  • Cory Kennedy brought me here.

  • cory kennedy

  • whenever this song starts i wanna start yelling WHERES YOUR HEAD AAAAT. thats just my inner child trying to break out. my sophisticated outer child prefers Gary Numan's original though. :o

  • I heard of this after learning it was used in "Where's Your Head At" and was pushed to look it up when I heard the album was included in "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die". Great piece. Very eccentric though. This guy probably fueled the 90s House movement

  • the lyrics that inspired the movie WALLE (the beginning anyway)

  • @latinapride93

    and you are an idiot

  • Dude... That's not what the song's about!! It's about having M.E!

  • Saw Numan perform this in the early 80's live featuring Chris Cross of Ultravox fame on violin giving it this John Foxx-y feel.

  • @SirTweakAlot Billy Currie of Ultravox not Chris Cross.

  • Still such a wild RIDE!!! Back when this lp came out it was CREEPY and FUN at same time. ty all for the good stuff

  • This is such an awesome song!!! XD Gary Newman is such a legend :)

  • basement jaxx are faggots who makes shitty music. this is the original

  • Comment removed

  • Oh thank god you said Chemical Brothers sampled this or it would have driven me mad.

  • @princessprojector basment jaxx did moron

  • @sparkey989 How can you be so dumb?

  • WHERE'S YOUR HEAD AT?!??!?!?!?

  • @sleepx2 Ha ha ha!!!

  • Brilliant song, great guitar sound + synths

  • I listened to Gary Numan in high school and I think he was ahead of his time

original cool stuff not to be dismissed or overlooked

  • The Basement Jaxx owe their career to Gary Numan.

  • WRONG

  • @tjsbigidea hmm never heard of 'em. wonder why

  • I USED TO PARTY MY ASS OFF IN GERMANY LISTENING TO GARY NUMAN!!! SO LONG AGO 1986

  • @kytitan6825 -- I USED TO PARTY MY ASS OFF IN OHIO LISTENING TO GARY NUMAN!!! SO LONG AGO 1980

  • Imagine being 10 years old in 1979 and hearing this sound for the first time. Polymoog/Minimoog - vox humana/reverb. It was all new then and still sounds great over 30 years later. Wonderful (O: Bearhug & love. Tx

  • so this is where MGMT ripped their from....

  • @gnbeatz what do you mean,mgmt,m8?i aint being rude,i simply cant work it out, lol.

  • @brazzbazz In almost all the songs from that album featured the same synth, so it seems to be Cars. It's true what you say xDDD

  • @MrLechugo the synths used mostly on the pleasure principle was a polymoog andminimoogs passed through various phasers and flangers.

I've been into numan since are friends electric came out (1979) heard it on the new radio i had gotten whilst on holiday ion southport.. :)

the futuristic sounds amazed me (remember this was just on the back of punk which wasn't great for a 7 year old)

i've been into electronic type stuff ever since.

    (hence the name :))

  • @chemicalBR0 thanks. i was gonna say... i HEAR A MOOG... moogs are fantastic. think i will use it on my next album.

  • @brazzbazz oh no i disagree. this is way better than the basement jaxx version. sounds so haunting

  • as much as i love gary numan, i can't help but hate his voice sometimes...

  • @xAfroxSpectaculox But without that voice, he'd never be the Robot or the Android.

  • i can remember watching this guy do cars on saturday night live way back in 1979. i was only 8. i thought he was so cool. i still do. and hey he's the father of music...you got to love him.

  • haha wtf the movie "Wall-E" apparently ripped the idea of this song way off! why didn't they call the movie M.E.?

  • @rensephoz2 Yes...and M.E. was the first recored idea of being the last Machine on earth...

  • @mitchFTFfuture

    But it's about a robot.

  • Anyone remember the Basement Jaxx? This bass line was used in "Where's your head at". Both songs are equally paranoid.

  • Mc Esoteric does a pretty good remix of this song but nothing beats the origional.

  • Gary was a genius with the polymoog keyboard. Can any other keyboard recreate that sound?

  • Lets remember Thomas Dolby too

  • Gary Numan, Vince Clarke, Kraftwerk, Afrika Bambaataa (to a lesser extent-cos he gave the harder beats to the genre which then influenced Hip Hop and house music) made electronic music what it is to day, so much influence over the last 30 years

  • I really couldn't care less if Basement Jaxx sampled this song, I love "Where's your head at?" and if it hadn't had been for that song I wouldn't have found out about Gary Newman.

It's crazy to think Gary Newman did like, all his stuff 20-30 years ago, and that it's still getting appreciated on youtube.

  • @garrettisabob It's what we in the trade call a timeless and class act! This will STILL be discussed another 30 years later, trust me. Numan is THE electronica GOD!! Yes, Kraftwerk was first, but Numan took it to a whole nutha level

  • I'm pretty sure you would still know about Gary Numan. You mean you've never heard the song "Cars"????? haha

  • Comment removed

  • I HAD NO IDEA BASEMENT JAXX SAMPLED THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow, I like gary numan so much more now! Damn you basement jaxx, you should have gave more credit to numan!!

  • Wonderful!

  • Gary Numan was brilliant. The synthesizer was a revolutionary instrument that lead to this futuristic sound.

  • Was? He is still alive I saw him last year.

  • THANK YOU for putting this MASTERPIECE on here!

    my fav by him

  • i was once argueing with a girl back in a depressing bedsit flat in Leeds during the cold bleak winter of 1980, it was a row that would completely end our friendship that 3 months earlier had seemed so promising. This underrated masterpiece was playing in the background and it seemed quite surreal , it seemed as if my life was in black and white in those days.

  • m.e. I eat dust

    We're all so run down

    I'd call it my death

    But I'll only fade away

And I hate to fade alone

    Now there's only m.e.

  • yup jaxx sampled this song

  • Err, that song sounds like this. They sampled it.

  • breaks my heart this song. love it. Thanks for sharing good vid does the song justice

  • Saw him live twice, Genius

  • this track is 30 years old believe it or not

  • Love this tune! Brings back memories :)

    Nice work on the video!

    5*****

    64m >:-)

  • @milehighlander. Couldn't agree with you more. He's a bloody legend. And such an unassuming guy. Often looks frightened in interviews, but I read he has Aspergers. Like New Zealand's Ladyhawke. Check her out she's awesome.

  • milestone song

  • RODARTE!!!

  • this should have been included in fallout 3. I would totally rebeat the entire game if this was on the soundtrack

  • "I have no mouth and I must scream." A.M

  • The man is beyond critique at this point. After all he started a genre. Not many have that boast in their repertoire. I just like the fact I can reconnect with his music 20 years later on youtube and find people still propin' the guy! He is awesome if not a bit tweaked!

  • FUK! Its been 20 years!!!

  • @milehighlander He most likely also fueled that huge amount of good House music in the 90s. And it was Synthpop he invented right?

  • nice video

  • my fav gary newan song.

  • How come people get so annoyed about the Basement Jaxx reference? I think both tracks are class. Numan is a superb musician/artist, I just think Basement Jaxx took a great riff and gave it a twist. This song takes a different tangent and is compelling stuff.

  • I want to make a correction to the description: It's about a robot who is the last living thing on earth and his batteries are slowly dying. It's in the Pleasure Principle liners.

Great song. One of his best.

  • Basement Jaxx sample this & make it a killer bass line on "Where's Your Head At?"

  • basement jaxx are rip off idiots, and so are you clearly

  • One of my favourite Numan tracks, Brilliant stuff, thanks :-)

  • Absolute tune.

  • ive been fighting in numans corner for 30 yrs its great to see people who appreciate genius when they see it.

  • The Pleasure Principle is one of the greatest pop/electronic albums ever. Anyone who likes remotely electronic or dance music needs to thank the grandfather of it all. Rock's got Elvis. Electronic's got Gary Numan.

  • Where's your head at! Just illustrating the amazing influence of this man!

  • numan was awesome late seventies early eighties and fantastic live shows as well

  • WALL-E !!!

  • nononono M.E

    ☺

  • LOL I didnt know Basement Jaxx sampled this. I now love both Gary Numan and Basement Jaxx even more

  • Nice.....

Thanks for posting this great song

  • great video!

would you be willing to share what software was used to get the psychedelic colors and frame within a frame imaging???

i have been looking for these types of filters, and man i would have me some fun.

  • whats the bets he becomesthe next best thing , the way the music scence is going cars is being used in a green ad on tv and radio

  • this and down in the park has to be my two favorite numan songs=] oh and btw in my opinion numan is better than bowie=]

  • Comment removed

  • Love this whole period of Replicas, The Pleasure Principle and Telekon.

  • I remember a review this album 'The Pleasure Principle' made the comment, "He ONLY used synthesizers."

You hear Guitar, Bass, Violin, Viola, Real Drums, Piano, Vocals. and yes, Synthesizer as well. Gary Numan was the 1st artist to use wireless Mics on stage way before anyone else did. Now everyone does.

  • he was WELL ahead of his time, that's what scared people and made him a target for critics to stab the knife in further.

  • great song.....one of his best.....

  • If not THE best :)

  • Gotta be my favorite Numan song. The emotions that the music, lyrics, and vocals invoke are so powerful.

  • Gah, Gary Numan just doesn't get the props he deserves.

  • yeah i think he is brilliant

  • Definitely. ^^

  • I couldnt agree more, its unfortunate for me that I just now heard of this guy. Only reason was due to the song Metal that NIN covered. Senior Gary Numan seems to be waaaay before his time.

  • No! It's not unfortunate, it's great you discovered him at all! Hehe Yeah definitely before his time, a revolutionary artist I think. You should definitely check out Tubeway Army too, his band before he went solo, great stuff. :D

  • Wall-E 's anthem

  • wow

  • Numan is definatly my favourite artist,

Bassment Jaxx are my second favourite!

  • Haunting...vintage Numan.

  • One of my all time favorites. Damn, this is a fine tune. Second only to 'Down in the Park', in my humble opinion. Thanks for posting this.

  • Nice! Basement Jaxx sampled this.

  • the best son gin the world

  • I just wish the sample used by basement jaxx from this song appeared in this more often, it's so good

  • if i could just write one song as good as a numan song (without steeling from him) i will be happy

    hes a pure leg-end

  • pure-talent

  • such a funky dude..

  • songs dont get better than that!!!

  • numan early tunes still the best

  • what a song, just the arrangement is symphonic

  • Did Shiny Toy Guns "Le disko" peel off parts of the first 2 minutes of this song by Numan?

  • actually many people did..... including basement jaxx - where's your head at?

  • awesome and innovative, enough said

  • this is my fav song from "The principle of lust" album

  • Looks like we have someone who was born without ears and taste buds

  • you suck

  • Yeah with any luck britney will too!

  • its gary numan, the creator of electropop/sythpop, he is clearly a visionary. i gladly await his upcoming tour in australia, respect. its a musicians thing, no cockhead that has no knowledge of music has a opion, thats to u all, gary ur much blessed

  • Thank You!!! 5 stars as usual!!!

  • if your gunna hate on basement jaxx hate on richard x to for that sugar babes re make you can slag them off but if you didnt like there songs well they were all sampled from numan tracks so what are you exactly saying, youdont really like numan i heard those tracks and not for one minute did i think oh god these artists have ruined gary i actually quiet liked them

  • Wow, this is quiet amazing. Reminds me of MGMT in ways. Should of been more popular :(

  • i agree on the popularity issue- :(. his voice and the synth noises remind me much of MGMT too.

  • MGMT should remind you of Gary...

  • Have y'all heard any any of his newer stuff... It kicks some ass.

  • pleasure principle one of the greatest albums ever.

  • I love this song so much but I think my fave Gary Numan song is Aircrash Bureau. After that one probably Metal, and then either M.E. or This Wreckage.

I don't hate on Cars either but it's such a shame that Gary's known for only Cars outside ofhis tight little fan club.

  • I've been listening to Numan my whole life that is 13 years. He didn't get famous because the ignorant masses are to afraid tostep out of the mainstream to give his songs a chance. Camp Rock, Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers make millions for writing crappy songs. I don't understand why they are so popular, they suck. I want to Falcon Punch them lol. He deserves way more recognition hes probably the best out there but people will only go hey this guy was good after hes dead =(.

  • This is true!

  • very wise for one so young.

  • Yup, 100% agree with you.

  • I love both this song, "M.E.", and Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At"--both have their own tone--"M.E." is more dark and moody, while WYHA is more popier and upbeat, dancy-ish. Both are great for what they try to emote.

  • chill out who gives a shit if they sampled the song, now there is 2 great songs by 2 completely different artists.

bassment hasnt "ruined" anything,2 diffrent genres of music.

  • top song from tpp

  • the sugar babes took the tune from are friends electric, but he was a very good sport about it. if he can forgive the basement jaxx about it, then surely you can too

  • Haha...people are so threatened by new musicians sampling older tracks. Basement Jaxx sampled this melody because it's great, and it exposed a lot of the new generation to a great artist like Gary Numan. How did Basement Jaxx 'fuck up' or 'ruin' M.E.? Can't you still go listen to the original record?

    Take care.

  • tomkyriacou: Are you fucking stupid? Sampling is what the entire electronica genre is about you fucking nonse.

  • Ok I get you chewbacca1010, but there is no need to be rude about it.

  • tomkyriacou you're right. Gary Numan is one of the few artists whose songs really have a MEANING, something to say. It's a value wich gone lost in the last 20 years. Everyone who fucks up a great song like this should watch the flowers grow beneath the dust, full agree.

  • One of the best Gary Numan songs, I think the remix by basement jaxx? totally ruined the song I think they totally didn't get what it was about and should be shot.

  • sampling isnt about getting the meaning of the original, its just a damn good sample
