My PS3 also makes cooling fan noise when power on and nothing touched for a while but has no problems even when I start to touch it and play the game while the fan is still revving. After a while of playing it the fan stops but still operates as normal. I still have PS2 and makes the fan sound all the time I play it but again no problems.

My defective ps3 does that a lot (fan noise)when I played cod4 and had a pop up noise, and one week later it ps3 was dead, my replacement one is getting the same problem as my defective one

keep it in cooler spot, in the winter plug up the air vent with a box, in the summer put it next to the air vent, thats what i do.

okay your ps3 is fitted with a self cleaning system. it cleans the dust for you it like a vacuum cleaner.

just clean your back fan once and a while like once every 2 weeks to maintain good condition

all that sound is, is cleaning the dust out.my 80 does the same thing if i let it just sit there for awhile on the main screen it will start goign through sequences fan to fan and than get really allowed cause its doing a check and cleaning dust out.soo as i put a disc in it, it calms down and goes to normal.so theres nothing wrong with your ps3.

i have the 40 gig and its silent, it has only done that when i played it for a long time, but the sound would last for a few seconds, so i honestly think it dosent matter which gig the ps3 is, 80, 60, 40 and 20, overall they r silent

hey I have exactly the same problem maullster said that it doesnt have many vents. if you put it horizontaly and touch the left part of it you would see is hot but after a couple of minutes the temperture would reduce

yeah, my ps3 does that too. I think it's only the 40gb ps3 that does that because it doesn't have as many vents. They say it's chip doesn't warm up as fast, but that sound does annoy me sometimes

There are three major reasons why it makes a lot of noise. ONE being that the system has been turned on for a long time, if its over 2-3 hours, it might get much louder since it heats up. TWO is that its standing right up, and it makes more noise this way, put it down, my PS3 makes NO NOISE at all when its placed down that's how I always have it. And THREE something might have happened to it when it was shipped or its just very old. I had my PS3 for almost a year and its still silent.

yesterday I return this annoying device to store and change to another one. No noise, all works fine. To new buyers - check devices carefuly before buying during 10-15 minutes. If you hear noise - don't buy!
