  • who is the girl at the beginning of the video ? Mimi ?

  • This was recorded before I heard her live at Club Mount 47 in Cambridge. She sounds so mature at 17, and never imo sounded better. Funny now that she did not have to open her mouth, because her overbite leaves enough for the sounds to get out just fine. Her guitar playing is the sort that beginners do, but she did continue, and influenced a generation. Thank you very much for posting this.

  • we had to sing this in chior last year but this year the chior SUCKS last year we were amazing i wish we could sound as good as we did all the little sevies make us sound childish and im not the only person who feels this way

  • @ALL Where is Mimiandjoaniebaez? ... and the wonderful videos he posted for us? ... where are the comments we have all shared together?

Christophe (je pense que c'est ton nom) fais nous signe !

    (P.S. je suis sur gmail)

  • heard this as a child on her greatest hits, vol.1 (I have the mono original lp) - sad, powerful protest ballads such as this one are increasingly rare - seems the age of twitter as turned most into mindless fools

  • I wish I were there!

  • HOW OLD WLD SHE HAVE BEEN BY NOW???

  • @dmotto25 She is still alive and performing. She is 70 this year.

  • Joan Baez visited North Viet Nam as a guest of the North Viet Namese government during the Viet Nam war. She denounced the U.S. bombing of the country. She has on many occasions supported socialism. She is not anti Communist but pro human rights.

  • what a angel of songstress

  • What a gem! Thanks!

  • Joan Baez is also very critical of capitalist society. She will speak out against injustice and oppression WHERE EVER she finds it.

  • Wow - I have been searching for this version of the song since 1985 - and here is the video. Thank you PBS!!!!!!!

  • You're lucky to have a video of Joan Baez in 1958 when she was not still unknown. In France, there was very few video of the great singers who engaged yet were well known and passed on great scenes. And our great singers engaged were often censored on radio until 1968, and even on TV until 1980

  • The funny part of watching this is how young she was. If she was more than 21 I'd be surprised. This is a lovely version.

  • @eotto2001 She was 17 when this footage was filmed. Bob Dylan was still in high school!

  • @metivo Joan and Bob are 5 moths apart in age. If he was in high school so was she.

  • My mother used to sing a version of this song to me when I was little. I have always loved this song!

  • Exquisite beauty and the voice of an angel. No wonder Bob asked her to marry him!

  • @gordbard Bob NEVER asked her to marry him! He found her tiresome and did everything he could to get rid of her. Her affection for him was unrequited he was very unkind to her. I thought it a sad story.

  • Breathtakingly beautiful. How I love her!

  • Baby Joan! She's but a child here, and already such a beautiful voice and it's often overlooked that she's a master guitarist too.

  • can't believe so much time has gone by... she's still wonderful...

  • WoW !!! Fantastisch

  • Hoe come ALL three girls look just like Joan....including the two at the refreshment stand?? :D I mean....REALLY look like her!!!! Trick photography? :o

  • @ashirly

That is a nice observation. After 59 she became quiet famous on the eastern seaboard, maybe some kind of baezmania or just coincidence.

  • Awesome!

  • love her

  • Gosh, this reminds me of Club 47

  • almost flawless, except the camera zoomed on the opld painting when she is far more interesting to watch.

  • @blumenthol

It was to be a cameraman soft erotic films. The camera always turns toward the wall or a picture at the most moment interesting of movie. Who knows what happened in the club 47 after the song.

  • I agree with " metivo".

    She's beautiful! Divina!!!!!!!!!

  • joanie was seventeen years old --- i first heard her when i was 16 -- a folkie chick said i needed to expand my horizons and she played the black album with silver dagger and john riley -- then she played dylan's freewheelin --- guess that was 1962

  • Do viewers realize that Ms. Baez was only 17 years old at the time this was filmed? It was a year or more before she recorded her first album! This is just incredible to see!

  • @metivo she is like my great aunt

  • Do viewers realize that Joan Baez was only 17 years old at the time this was filmed? This was a year or more before she recorded her very first album. The footage was discovered in someone's freezer! It is just incredible to see this!

  • I've worked with Joan, The Dixie Chicks and Babs. They are moronic nit-wits. I'm not following a party line, either. I'm honestly telling you that behind the scenes, when the mic is off and the spotlight dimmed...they treat people like dirt, demand attention, are absolutely unreasonable and act like they are the only people on the planet that actually NEED something. A far cry from whining about feeding starving children and lambasting wasteful spending. They are all guilty of the above.

  • ...treat people like dirt, demand attention, are absolutely unreasonable and act like they are the only people on the planet ...

A lot of people are like that it doesn't mean that they are morons it just means they are butts sometimes like we all are.

  • If you've worked with all of these people you should have no trouble backing up what you've said by giving your name. People who HAVE actually worked with Joan would tell a vastly different story.

  • At least, you are not afraid of telling what you know and think. It is a good point.

And if you don't give your real name... nobody does... why should you?

  • yes??? your comments there are in a lot of videos... I spoke with joan and I think she is a pretty woman with powerful voice and I think she is really amazing...and a good person altruist, and a human rights activist

  • @punki7793 Truly wonderful. The true example of '60s idealism.

  • You have a hidden agenda and you know what I mean!

  • magic singer, she becomes music

    herself when she sings.

    ciao

  • You still attack others with the "pinko communist" tag with no proof? So

    1950s of you.

The energy you waste on the pathetic name calling shoud be spent developing an appreciation for our WONDERFUL AMERICAN MASTERS.

PS Baez has a well documented history of battling the former commie gov'ts of Russia, Poland, Czech, N Viet Nam and Cambodia and I fully supported her efforts

Jane Fonda called JB a reactionary CIA agent. There's always nutty ill informed extremists on both ends- like you

  • Incredible to see that this footage exists! Love her always.

  • crystal perfection

  • JOAN BAEZ , forever young.....

  • Joan Baez sucks as a singer. I never understood her appeal. None of her songs ever did anything for me.

  • but, just because you dont find her appealing doesnt mean she isnt a good singer!

  • @gggreggg

Oh, & I forget to mention in my earlier comment, she totally ruined the musical score to "Silent Running". God, she's so awful! I can't freakin' take her high trilly voice. There's NO accounting for taste, I guess. U know who else I never understood the appeal for? Bob Dylan. So many shower him w/praise that he's such a musical genius. What?! Genius? The guy is hardly inteligible as to what he's actually saying & he gets deified as some kind of music god? Nope, I don't get either one.

  • why even come to a Baez site if your too daft to appreciate her remarkable talent?

  • @taddyd1

I didn't seek her out, oh Wise One. Okay? I'm subscribed to PBS and this appeared in the batch of new videos just as many other subjects do. Why are *YOU* so daft? Don't you even know how YouTube works and how you get sent new videos? And another thing... What's so bad with what I said, anyway? Are all comments about something supposed to be blowing sunshine up someone's backside? Hmm? What's wrong with expressing a negative comment or critique? Hmm? You're such a fascist conformist!

  • Your silly explanation still doesn't reveal why you watched it , knowing you hate her, but thanks for making the effort anyway.

Like you said "there's NO accounting for taste". In this case matching my tastes w/ those of avowed Baez fans like the Beatles, MLK, JFK, Cesar Chavez, Ralph J Gleason, Bruce Springsteen, Led Zepplin, Stevie Wonder, nearly every female singer since 1960, etc etc etc etc speaks for itself..

Your inablility to appreciate Dylan is also particularly sad problem.

  • Baez has a well documented anti-communist record and I fully agree with her sentiments and supported her efforts against the former communist gov'ts Russia, Poland, Cambodia, Czech Republic and North Viet Nam.. Maybe if you spent less energy with the pathetic name calling you'd have more time to develope an appreciation for our wonderful American Masters.

Do people still call others "communists" for no reason ? I thought that ended in the 80s.

  • I agree with you. She was mentioned by conservative writer David Horowitz as one of the FEW left wing anti Vietnam war people of prominence who condemned the commie regimes that took over in Vietnam and Cambodia when it became clear they were committing massive atrocities. If Hanoi Jane Fonda criticised her then it's like giving her extra kudos in my view !

What a great singer. I always loved her voice AND she is half Scottish which is half of what I am !

  • @taddyd1 Amen a wonderful talent and great American voice for freedom.

  • @taddyd1 Amen a wonderful talent and great American voice for freedom.

  • @taddyd1 What is seen here is a recording. Seeing what is believing? Uh-uh no way because fame & fortune follows purity & perfection resulting in total corruption of the values that allowed it to initially flourish. On the surface everything looks well alright.

  • @taddyd1 Joan Baez is also very critical of capitalist society. She will speak out against injustice and oppression WHERE EVER she finds it.

  • @taddyd1 Joan Baez visited North Viet Nam as a guest of the North Viet Namese government during the Viet Nam war. She denounced the U.S. bombing of the country. She has on many occasions supported socialism. She is not anti Communist but pro human rights.

  • The genuis who scored "Silent Running", PDQ Bach (aka Peter Shickele), credits Baez' crystaline performances of his song for nailing him the job. Douglas Trunbull also has remarked how the participation of MIghty Ms Baez elevated the visibilty and prestige of the project.

  • @JixMa "Don't criticise what you don't understand"

  • nice to listen

  • Beautiful voice!

  • this is beautiful...i've never seen images of joan baez before the woodstock era...she's amazing...used to have her LP...back in the day...good memories!
