Buddy Rich seems to be the only person that only got better as he aged. Some drummers hit a peak and that's as good as they got, but Buddy.. man oh man..
Buddy Rich is BY FAR THE BEST EVER !!! NO one can even be compare to him. I feel bad for the un cult rock lover that can thing that one of there "heros" could be even for 1 second better than Buddy. HE IS AMASING and this solo proves it one more time. If u wana became a drummer, this is the man y should try to follow. Sorry my English but its not my language
He was definately ONE of the great musicians to express himself, I enjoy listening to him as well as other great players such as Papa Jo Jones, Jack DeJohnette, Philly Joe Jones, Dennis Chambers, Steve Gadd, Omar Hakim, its so wonderful to listen to a variety of players, dont you think???
You don't really think about it because they're behind the Solo Artist's name, but Sinatra's band has always been incredible, just the way they play, the skill, the styles, etc.
THE SOLO;BR was either 67or68 yrs old here. His solo here is TOTALLY brilliant!NOTE, playing with one hand at3:02while he dries his right hand with towel to prepare for the solo, crossovers at3:14,3:55,switching in and out of double time throughout the solo, playing bass drum with right hand at 4:14,simulation of a 1 handed roll with left hand at4:25by playing the 2nd and 3rd notes of a triplet in succession,4:43 incredible hi hat work with left hand underneath playing the bottom hi hat cymbal...
I didn't forget...I could talk a lot about this solo....I just only went to 4:43. You are right. It's all just remarkable and incredible. Cathy Rich (Buddy's daughter) said they called the doctor after this performance because Buddy didn't feel well. Cathy said she was VERY afraid as she watched this because she knew something was wrong with his health. Still, Buddy played the BEST as always.
It was once said that the drums would cower when Buddy played them. This is from the Frank Sinatra Concert For The Americas. Buddy played 3 songs in this concert interspersed within this Sinatra concert. The Buddy Rich band backed up Frank but Irv Cottler played with Frank. Cathy Rich remembers that after this tune her dad went backstage and nearly (or did)collapse and either doctors were called or he went to the hospital. She said she felt afraid that night for him while he played.

I agree, I wish there were more bands like that, at least in the national public eye.
