  • fantastic bass line and great playing. kevin's bass lines are absolutely amazing. this video made me realize how sexy this line in particular is. you did a great job getting the tone and feel down. awesome job!

  • awsome !

  • Dude this is SICK. I have never met anyone who could project the abstract genius of Kevin's music as well as you. *subscribe*

  • this is so awesome! great playing. are those TI flatwounds? do you have a Peavey t-40 yet? do you know that other "of montreal" tune, "grommel edit" or something like that?

  • @adebicki I just thought I'd let you know that I made a video of me playing along with Gronlandic Edit on my Peavey 1979 a while ago. It's not nearly as perfect but it sounds like you'd want to watch it

  • @AparoidX awesome, yeah, i'd like to see it! i bet it's great!

  • Great playing! What kind of rig are you playing through? I just picked up a 4003 and can't seem to get my sound quite as good as that.

  • man who the fuck can dislike of Montreal? don't they realize that this is like one of the most original bands ever?

  • man i've seen this video o n the suggestions for awhile, but i was always so reluctant on watching. I finally watched the entire thing in awe. Thank you for posting this, it was wonderful

  • Nice quote you got there.

  • Fuck i love that bass<3

  • i dig it

  • Wow, I love this song and I had no idea this is how complex the bass sounded! Very good job, glad to see someone else giving this much value to my favorite band =)

  • since watching this I hear the song in a totally different light. apart from the lyrics.

  • this made me happy :)

    your really talented.

  • just amazing, my god. i usually hate bass.. but this just kicks the casket..

    I LOVE YOU.

  • Bass is the most elegant instrument in my opinion. This song/bassline only supports this. :]

  • Brilliant.

  • amazing dude!!!

  • I didn't until recently realize that half the music I really dig has genius bassline working in the bg.

Of Montreal is an example. Great job.

  • Bass = best without a doubt. It's brilliant in every song.

  • Davey'd be proud.

  • Great stuff!!!!

  • the bass is without a doubt the best part of kevin's songs. this is great!

  • you're great!

  • they sound like "Sparks"

  • I never thought of that until I read your comment. Maybe that's why I dig them so much.

  • @burlearth Yes, there has always been a strong Sparks influence in their work combined with a strong 10cc influence. Then, on The Sunlandic Twins, Kevin began working a strong Prince influence into the mix. And somehow, he managed to make them all set well together.

  • One of the appealing elements with Of Montreal's music, which is also a fault in some people's eyes, is that the songs are often "busy".

  • Woah, that adds a whole new dimension to on of my fav songs, its hard to hear in the song unfortunetely.

  • kevin barnes is such a brilliant musician!

  • of montreal song + Rickenbacker bass + brilliant bassist = coolness

  • really nice bassline, that rickenbacker bass has a cool tone...what kind of strings you use and which pickup is sounding?

  • SO AWESOME !!!!

please transcribe more Kevin Barnes' basslines. he is an unbelievable melodicist. tremendous work, sir.

  • well done! Hofner Club Bass in the corner?

  • YES YES YES!!! Well said in your vid description, oM's basslines are so funky and melodic; super disco-y at parts, then really herky-jerky staccato stuff at other times. Great playing!

  • Kevin and Davey would be proud. Your bass even looks like Davey's. It's so true, the basslines don't get nearly as much recognition as they should. You should definitely keep posting OM songs, I loved watching this!

  • dope. you are my new source when I want to listen to this on the youtubes. :)

  • awesome video and awesome bassline man..i tip my hat off to you. I play the bass too man

  • sickness can I have your bass?? =p

  • Very impressive. As a composer, I've been delving into the musical textures of the last few oM albums, and I love the (often multitracked) bass lines Kevin uses. Often, those are the melodies that stick in my mind for a while, as with "Wraith Pinned to the Mist (and Other Games)" or "We Were Born the Mutants Again with Leafling."

This video reaffirms the fact that the timbre of the 4001 (as used by oM) is just plain sexy. Kevin's music makes me want to be a bassist more than a guitarist.

  • @zyzzy78 they actually arent multi bass tracks. They just use two bassists on certain songs

  • @Zebztheshit2 The live version of oM does often use two bassists, and two seems to be the general requirement for songs on oM albums that are almost entirely performed by Kevin. On a few songs, though, it seems that Kevin overdubs at least three bass lines on his own (as in "So Begins Our Alabee," if I recall correctly).

  • ahhh...dude that was sooooooo good. I love all of Kevin's basslines, he's such an amazing musician. Kudos to getting that down. The bassline for this song is so incredible. I saw your Alabee one and that was also so impressive. Do Bunny next! Do Bunny next! haha

That was so perfect, I wanna kill myself.

    jk

And I concur rick basses are the shyt.

  • ..........awesome.......thats all i can say...

  • this is the bassist for of montreal

  • dude this is incredibe i love the sound of the the 4001

also a question do you play more bass or guitar?

  • This is one of my favourite songs of all time. Never delete this video. You're so great... really.

  • Hey man great job really incredible. I play acoustic/electric guitar myself and have been figuring out some of their new song from skeletal lamping. Kevin Barnes is unbelievbly tallented and i don't have clue how he can come up with such catchy riffs, lyrics everything. Are you in a band?

  • his basslines are godly. thank you for posting this. i don't understand why the bass isn't put as a higher priority for more bands. it's my favorite musical instrument!

  • Great tone, Rick basses are the best!

  • perfect! Please try and tackle so begins our alabee or the reputed immortals

    keep these videos comin !

  • Wow, you really nailed it, but I think your playing was a bit off tempo at times. Great vid nonetheless!

  • That was amazing and you rock.

  • I have always had an appreciation for Kevin's basslines but this took it to the next level

  • I can see a Heritage AC-30 in the background.Taking the Rickenbackers under consideration as well,I can tell you got a very good taste sir.

  • Awesome, dude. I love of Montreal and will actually be seeing them the next two nights. You nailed it!

  • Hey man, is that a Fawn Ac-30 in the backround?

Any chance its a JMI? that would be deadly!

Great collection and playing, love your stuff.
