@libertytooth I really really love horses and I wouldnt slaughter or eat them, but I can't be self righteous and say what these people are doing is wrong. WHen Ferdy was no longer productive they used him for something else that is more productive. It's not as if they were just dumping their bodies to be laid to waste. when i'm older i'm adopting old horses and animals people don't want anymore. i'm going to live on a farm and rescue animals. i love animals. and horses are my favorite. it kills me to know people kill them for a living. i don't have a horse but that is all i want. i would love to have one of these horses knowing i saved it's life. thumbs up if you agree.
Most horseman are greatly opposed to this, it is downright wrong. We praise them and give them glory and then we see this happen, it's heart breaking to most of us. The damm president just re opened these house in the united states in which many are outraged. We have installed retirement homes for a lot of horses and some tracks are even holding trainers responsible if horses end up in these places and revoking their licenses. The Race horses are bathed and groomed and fed everyday.
Don't they do that to cows I mean realistically its kinder to ''humanely'' put the horse out of its misery than let it grow old in some kind of mass elderly horse enclosure that isnt financially viable and has no commerical incentives, finally, as long as horseracing institutions and rules continue theirs no place for this kind of institution whatever emotional attachments exist to the beautiful animals.
Horse racing is on its way out anyway. Most gamblers of my generation prefer video poker, online poker and sports betting. Horse racing caters to a dying breed of old men.

This sounds crazy, but when I am older, I am going to donate money to humane societys, i am going to save dogs before being gassed, i am going to adopt retired racehorses, maybe this does sound crazy to you, but i want to make a difference in life.

Ok so either you euthanize the animal and just bury it or you put it to use so its body doesn't go to waste...There's 7 billion people in this world, nothing should go to waste...You have to look at it from different point of views...I'am not saying I'am a huge fan of this, and as a student of veterinary technology I read and hear about these types of issues all of the time. Actually, they do send "high grade" race horses to slaughter. If they are unable to produce quality offspring or just have no more use to the owners/breeders they are shipped to slaughter houses. You might want to get your information straight before opening your mouth. I believe this to totally wrong.

my sisters horse henry was a race horse he was dumped in a field for 10 years at the end of his career but at hte age of 16 my sister was given him for free , or he would be sent to slaughter.

Even so, Old Friends is trying to get him and War Emblem to their facility and are working out deals. Too bad more of Japan`s farms aren`t more like the one Charismatic`s at, it would be a lot better of a place.
I am a member and supporter of PETA, but I disagree with their conclusion that refusing to watch racing will "help" these horses. Actually, it will ensure that ALL thoroughbreds are slaughtered, as the only reason they are born and bred is to race. If anyone reading this cares about the plight of the famous American horses that end up at stud in Japan, please give generously to the organization Old Friends, which brings home TBs who have outlived their usefulness as foreign studs.
Looks like a typical slaughter to me... we should open horse slaughtering back up in the US. It is just the same as other meats, especially since horses have no other "real" use. This would really cut down on the release of domestic horses into the wild causing problems

You should've seen the look on my daughter and her co-workers face when a Japanese big wig from TTMA went out to eat with them. The big wig was asked if he wanted the "house" steak. He answered, " Ahh "horse" steak. What kind, thoroughbred ? " Shocked look on everyone's face. She told him that, since we live in Kentucky, the horse is worshiped. But I geuss not for some people. If I had a farm, these champions would have a good home to be pets only, no more riding they've enough.
This happens in Australia too. Every year 18 000 horses who do not run fast enough are slaughtered. I do not supprt horse racing. It is a most cruel industry.

my husband works for the race and polo horse stables in barbados.... i sincerely hope CO Williams doesn't ship those to japan as well.... from what i understand, too old horses are often sold to locals to live out their lives... i've even said i would like to get a horse next time we get a chance....

The fact that this happens disgusts me. It upsets me even more now as I have owned an Ottb for a year now and to think this could of happened to him... It's just heartbreaking. These are great horses that can be retrained into about anything. My thoroughbred was abused and emaciated when I got him. He was terrified of people. Now he's a bsja grade c showjumper and clears 1m40 at home with ease. Thoroughbreds are just amazing.

Actually, they do send "high grade" race horses to slaughter. If they are unable to produce quality offspring or just have no more use to the owners/breeders they are shipped to slaughter houses. You might want to get your information straight before opening your mouth. I believe this to totally wrong.

my sisters horse henry was a race horse he was dumped in a field for 10 years at the end of his career but at hte age of 16 my sister was given him for free , or he would be sent to slaughter.

Charismatic is at the same farm Sunday Silence lived at before he died of a heart attack. That farm is known to keep their horses through their stud pension. Even so, Old Friends is trying to get him and War Emblem to their facility and are working out deals. Too bad more of Japan`s farms aren`t more like the one Charismatic`s at, it would be a lot better of a place.

I am a member and supporter of PETA, but I disagree with their conclusion that refusing to watch racing will "help" these horses. Actually, it will ensure that ALL thoroughbreds are slaughtered, as the only reason they are born and bred is to race. If anyone reading this cares about the plight of the famous American horses that end up at stud in Japan, please give generously to the organization Old Friends, which brings home TBs who have outlived their usefulness as foreign studs.

Looks like a typical slaughter to me... we should open horse slaughtering back up in the US. It is just the same as other meats, especially since horses have no other "real" use. This would really cut down on the release of domestic horses into the wild causing problems

You should've seen the look on my daughter and her co-workers face when a Japanese big wig from TTMA went out to eat with them. The big wig was asked if he wanted the "house" steak. He answered, " Ahh "horse" steak. What kind, thoroughbred ? " Shocked look on everyone's face. She told him that, since we live in Kentucky, the horse is worshiped. But I geuss not for some people. If I had a farm, these champions would have a good home to be pets only, no more riding they've enough.

This happens in Australia too. Every year 18 000 horses who do not run fast enough are slaughtered. I do not supprt horse racing. It is a most cruel industry.

So a racehorse that retires has no possible useage at all? Well, with that logic, shouldn't retired people be slaughtered/killed/whatever you want to call it? I mean... they don't really do much, and most of us put our elderly in homes, which by the way, cost a lot of money per month to have them housed there. At least with a retired horse, you could profit from trail rides, or you could sell them to a horse camp or some place that would take care of them as well as educate younger people.

The fact that this happens disgusts me. It upsets me even more now as I have owned an Ottb for a year now and to think this could of happened to him... It's just heartbreaking. These are great horses that can be retrained into about anything. My thoroughbred was abused and emaciated when I got him. He was terrified of people. Now he's a bsja grade c showjumper and clears 1m40 at home with ease. Thoroughbreds are just amazing.

I clearly have never seen, and will never want to see again, the absolute barbarity in the slaughterhouses in Japan. It is disgraceful, and makes me physically ill. I am heartbroken at what i have just witnessed, that beautiful trusted those men and let them hose him down, not knowing that this would add to the severity of his cruel death. All racehorses are seen as, are a dollar sign or a piece of meat. It disgusts me what goes on in this world.. These murderers are obviously not human.

Don't blame the slaughterhouses - all they are doing is providing a beneficial solution to the surplus of horses bred for racing. Its RACING here that is under condemnation, not the slaughter houses or the Japanese. Major races with large gambling stakes only work to create greed and competitiveness between trainers. Horses aren't like dogs and cats - retired racehorses require large investments for upkeep, and cannot be ridden, so what else are we to do with them?
