When Zen Arcade came out I had a lot of fun reading the words and trying to fit them into Bob's awesome slurring careless singing. "Is that really what he's singing?" Chartered Trips is a prime example. Especially the second time he sings "I thought I owed myself a trip away...etc."
Hüsker Dü ,that what they should sound in the 21 century...sad but true-never again with Greg ( owner of a restaurant)and Grant (looks like a shadow of himself). Well, Bob rock on !!!!!!!!!!
going to see bob on 9th december cant wait unfortunately husker du were before my time just glad im geting the chance to see bob hopefuly he'l do some husker tracks :)
Husker Du aren't going to reunite because Bob and Grant hate each other. Simple as that. At least Bob ditched the silly, unnecessary keyboard/synth and went back to the classic trio for the current tour. Way more intense. Saw them last night. Unreal.
i think the reason why bob don't wanna do a husker reunion show is cause he thinks that the zen arcade era and stuff is the most defining, and he can't do justice to the anger in those songs.
i'd personally love to see a reunion just for the grant songs and the melodic bob ones. anyone else agree?
Totally agree with you man, would love to see them reunite but I think they won't for the reasons you just stated. I wish they could just do it, but they have their reasons.
I don't think Grant's up to it--and Greg's probably just not into it. Silly that they don't just play together sometime, though. Hey, same damn thing for the Replacements. What the hell? Just do it.
Anyone ever wonder WHY Bob will not don the Flying V anymore? I tell ya, I would just about lose it if I ever saw him put it back on ... It was part of the rock icon image that IS Bob Mould. The Strats are cool .. but as long as he's blowing the back wall off of clubs (as he appears to be doing these days), why not take it up a notch .. Bob, if you're out there.. If you're reading this: Give it a try :)
Ha ha... that first shot of Greg is --wait, he's not Greg, but he's copping the cutest Greg head-bob.
All detractors be damned--this material is gaining momentum and power. It sounds excellent, and yeah, it's aged and grown. Boston is a good band by the way, winkus.
.".Brendan doesn't play this as good as him, though I do commend his use of the hi-hat, and of course I love his drumming in Fugazi." OF COURSE he doesnt play as good as Hart.. he was never in Husker Du..
It's so funny to see some other cat try to do what Grant Hart did in '85 on I Apologize (perhaps my favorite Rock song of the 20th century)... I credit a lot of Husker Du's charm to their jackhammer rhythm section. Grant is AS GOOD AS K.MOON on this particular track in my (not so) humble opinion.. He, and NORTON absolutely TEAR IT UP. This track has the angst, vigor, and intensity of a BARROOM BRAWL ... My point: I still love the tune, but ironically, the 'tighter' it is, less intense it is. THX
Also does anyone else notice Bob looking a lot happier in these videos? He's grinning all over the place, but watch a performance of 'Chartered' from the 80's and he looks tranq'd or pissed. or both
Yeah, Bob Mould definitely seems much happier nowadays. Not only does he have complete control over the song selection, but he's also out of the closet, which is probably a big load off his mind. He's admitted to the fact that he was trying to hide his sexuality back in the Husker Du days, and so he was probably trying to look as masculine and as tough as possible in those days.
Honestly, Grant always seemed a bit gay, but I was really surprised to learn that Bob was also gay.
Yeah, Grant Hart's such an expressive drummer..Brendan doesn't play this as good as him, though I do commend his use of the hi-hat, and of course I love his drumming in Fugazi.
Husker du will never reunite. And even if they did the gorup definately would not have the same effect and power as during the eighties. So this is the best we are going to get so its worth appreciating at least. And I think Brendan and Jason do a fine job of doing just to these songs.
Compared to two other Huskers, the originators they can´t help being just another guys repeating what´s already here. But in other Circle Of Friends songs like "Can´t help You anymore" they do a pretty good job. There´s no offence intended. Bob touring is a mighty good news anyway. My point is that some outstanding songs can´t be repeated for so long in same quality. They get trivialized.
I agree that their is a unique quality to the original Husker recordings and shows. But Grant and Greg are/were hack players. Brendan Canty (from FUGAZI!) and Jason Narducy (Verbow, Robert Pollard/Guided By Voices) are badass players who bring some serious power to these classic songs and, in my opinion, elevate their intensity. "Can't Help You Anymore" is not on Circle Of Friends.
Whoa, how can you call Grant and Greg "hack players"? Those guys always tore it up back in the day... I mean shit, we've got tons of evidence of how good they were right here on YouTube.
Sorry, but they just can't replace Grant and Greg. They're good, but watch the video of "Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill" and "I Apologize" from 1985, and you'll see what I mean.
I completely agree with you Patatish. First of all let's not forget that Rock 'n' Roll needn't be that good to be great... None of any of the cats that Bob has ever played for would ever be able to play in a "Return to Forever" type band, one where there really are 'Monster players' .. How anyone can say anything to critisize the original Huskers is beyond me; it's like finding a fault with a rose for having thorns... thx.
No Husker karaoke would bring the old feel back. Drums, bass and background vocals are thin and artificial. But fortunately Bob has some lovely new stuff like "Old highs new lows".
They definitely don't have the same tight intensity Grant and Greg had. Grant's double time fills and Greg's forceful, up-front playing really stood out.

way i see it, mould is performing his songs, just like mmccartney performs his songs, even if they were released as beatles songs, still his own.

Why is he turning Husker Du songs into something that sounds as polished as "Boston". And I love the synth addition... beautiful... I feel raped...
