Remember following the RAC rally in the mid 80s... trying to take insane photos of the 6r4., RS200, 205s, Mad Lancia's etc.. Great days.. Great memories..
Such a shame these cars don't rally anymore - everything is so sanatized by our nanny state politicians. The power and the glory of the great group B rally cars is truly something to behold. The 6R4 has is on the sound though - what a beast!
Fond memories of seeing Tony Pond driving the 6R4 in Lombard RAC Rally. Also remember seeing a genuine ex-works for sale in Motoring News at £30k....but that was a long time ago and i guess youd be lucky to find an owner willing to sell now never mind at £30k!
The original developer of this car was the late and great Tony Pond. The original motor was the from the Rover Vitesse, which was an aluminium block v6. I had the pleasure and honour as a young boy in the early 80's to drive in the development car with Tony who was a freind of our family. The first version front engined monster which was undrivalbe! He was truly a great driver and an even greater man! Group B cars were banned in 1986, and tht changed the face of ralying forever! RIP Tony!
You are such a lucky guy 6R4NET having being in one of these machines. I can only imagine how much the g-force was like under accelaration. I would like this car on the road if I had the money.
itsreally nice to see this video as i helped rebuild this car - rebuilt during 1989-1991 at TPR racing (dave appleby motorsport). it was an awesome car then and is still now. built many a 6r4 during 1988-1993. Most engines we fitted were built by cliff humphries and goodmans engines. occasionally by sam nelson also.i miss working on these cars. i did get to drive quite a few, in galway, jersey, wexford and lower seagry!! this car is a legend!!
I thought the engine was a TWR V6 (later in the jag 220), but u do know your cars. I wish i could afford one of these animals on the road. It would be 'Bye bye EVO!! EASILY
Can you imagine an impreza against this firepower??
It's amazing to think this thing is actually a metro?? Did BL know what they were doing when they slotted the TWR V6 in the back of this car? The 6R4, the rs200 and the quattro will never be forgotten because of what they were all about. I think the group B cars were simply astonishing..
The v6 wasnt from twr. When the 6r4 was banned from the wrc in 87 twr bought the rights to the engines and bought quite a few engines off them too, that was why a few of the 6r4's had the rover v8 in the back which a copany called fg rallying done.
Having been passenger in a couple of 6R4's now (incuding me in this vid) You really cant appreciate the violent acceleration and braking these monsters produce.
wow i wud luv to have a test drive in one of these 6r4s i have seen the m in rallys in the forrestry the sound is to die for and the acceleration i mean wow ...amazing machine lol
if you close your eyes and listen to this v6 music you wouldnt think its coming from a rally car.. its more like early 80's formula 1 v6s, a circuit racer sound. very funny and unique car indeed and i always loved its sound. this beautiful sound could only be paralleled with yet another legendary engine - 5cyclinder Audi S1.
No the Original works and clubmans cars were 3 litres. Then the msa made the mgo to 2.8 and 2.5 litres for competing in national rallies. Yes there are some 8R4's about with the rover v8 in the back as a chap i Know rallies one with a 4.4 litre v8 in the back.
i got to go in a time attack 6r4!

6R4 are still used, just not for major rallies and only for club events, But yes it is a shame that group B has gone.
