I was there live. It happened. He answered the phone and said, "I have no who this is. Let me answer this." It was an older crowd there that day, very pro-knight. His wife was there, his good buddy Bob Hammel from the Bloomington paper. It was 1 pm..and he was sober..just performing for the crowd, who gave him a standing ovation when he entered.

John Wooden tried to keep Indiana from hiring Bob Knight because everyone already knew what a great coach he was. Wooden was a very small man in reality and was a really mean referee baiter and allowed his entire program to be sold out to the infamous booster Sam Gilbert.

I believe it. John Wooden was/is the most overrated coach in th history of the game. Yeah, he had to do somethings right, but during that era "California was the place to be." Jim Morrison moved to Hollywood and even the hillbilly Clampetts moved to Beverly Hills, both only 15-20 minutes from UCLA. Everyone wanted to experience Southern California. That's part of the reason UCLA got just about whoever they wanted in just about every sport. With basketball things "snowballed."
