Because Papa Gates tweeted saying he may or may have gone to a wedding that weekend and it may or may have been Syn's. He said that many months after The Rev's passing. When all of them are in the pool you can see Val in her wedding dress. Rev probably said that to Syn and Michelle because they were engaged.
