since you say, do you by chance know what Chinese form Niahanchi exactly originates from? it remains a mystery for Karate researchers. But 'Hand Of Death' (1976) movie features an episode with a taolu very similar to Naihanchi Nidan
My teacher's teacher did a deshi with us last month, and he told us that he thinks it comes from Tam Tui (spring leg). Type Tam Tui (Also spelled Tan Tui) into youtube and click on the some videos, you'll see the similarities.
cont. This is "the" fundamental shurite kata, to Nahate's Sanchin kata, if you can do a sanchin stance, place the feet parallel with toes in and you have this stance. Funakoshi learned this for the first 9 years of his training, and Otsuka of Wado ryu said you could not master this kata in its entirity in one lifetime. on the face of it it looks simple, but I'd advise anyone to look at Iain Abernrthy's bunkai for it.
Guys and gals, the stance in naihanchin dachi, if this was Shotokan then it would indeed be Kiba dachi(horse stance) and the kata would be called Tekki shodan as Funakoshi remaned it. TBC
Perhaps students with deep stances should consider that with age comes arthritis and the stiffening of joints. I wonder if you would question the depth of his stance if you attacked him and he responded? My master is in his 60's and he no longer kicks high, but my respect for his ability to drop any student with just a touch of his fingers teaches me that his ability to harness his inner energy flows strong. Still waters run deep - flash flood will do well to remember.
This is correct form and very good performance of Naihanchi as it was practiced on Okinawa in times then karate was not a sport but martial art intended to be used in situations where your life was in danger. Ther is no need to do it faster especialy at expense of form and cordination. Speed is not as important as timing and power generation without excessive movment. If you are taught niaifanchi which is seriously different from what is shown here, then what you are practicing is not Karate.
@Andris717 the horse stance seems a little shallow knees werent bent at all(looked that way) but i studied Ryukyu Kempo not shito Ryo but its very much the same kata Horse stance is a little deeper is all
@stompySharpNpointy From what I know about this kata from a Shitoryu practitioner point of view there is no horse stance in it, that's why he isn't doing horse stance... altho perhaps other Karate styles have horse stance in this form!
I like the fact that he performs them slowly, because it gives the students of Shito Ryu time to learn the entire kata and get it right. Very good form he has, that he does.
why is everyone hating on this guy? There's more to kata than just speed, and classically forms were performed in much more natural stances, in fact they say you're only supposed to use deep stances when you're learning and gradually raise them to something more natural. If you really pay attention to his movements he may not be moving super quick but he's far from slow, and every movement is rock solid.
Agreed. This is an instructional video, the movements are slow on purpose, so you can see what they're doing. Technique first, then power, then speed...that's the goal in karate training. Heck, that's the goal in pretty much every art. Even Bruce Lee, who didn't agree with kata, still taught you should be able to learn the proper way to do a punch or kick before you attempt to use on someone. Karate is no different. Learn the actual move first, then apply power, then work on speed.
may i ask whats the relation between shitokai and shitoryu. because im practicing shitoryu although it is close with shitokai but there is a very small variation. Plus this video says shitokai in the beginning but the youtube title is shitoryu? im confuse educate me please.
@nishikaigan wtf are you talking about? shito ryu was the name sensei Mabuni came up with for his style. He united all the katas he had learned into one style, and called it shito ryu. The only difference between shito kai and ryu are, that ryu means style and kai means way.
@gghhap You'll maybe notice that I was answering a question. on the difference between the two, okay, maybe I could have been clearer. How about Shito Ryu, founder Mabuni Kenwa, he died and his sons argued. Kenzo 1927-2005 kept Shito Ryu and claimed 2nd Soke-ship, Kenei 1918 created Shito Kai.
Perhaps a more polite way to ask me would have been " could you explain?"
"WTF" is so impolite, and does nothing for your reputation.
@Kaisertoji Yes, basically. Many of the Kata in the 5 major styles, and indeed the forms of TKD are very similar. They are all evolved from the ancient Kata, even the ones created by the later masters use techniques from the classic Kata. Mutobu Choki actualy refered to a kata as a style of karate within itself. It's always good to remember that there are many paths in modern karate, all lead to the top of the mountain, but there is only the one mountain and one top. OSU!
dude i`m a girl! >:( and i am just saying from experience in my dojo(kobukon karate and kung-fu in Redmond Oregon.) and i am an instructor (or a "senpei" ) i personally teach this Kata. so i should know what is proper and what`s not! oh an i don`t watch naruto anymore. i don`t watch tv anymore.
dude id love to here you say that in the world of judo! its simple you treat them the same of they beat you senseless. the fact that men are naturally stronger than women is no issue. once a woman trains they beat many standards of men and karate's a sport with points so strength is no issue but speed and flexibility is and girls are naturally better at those. by the way I'm a guy! ZenDao Karate, D.A.M.A.F.I. jujitsu, Yang Tai Chi, Core Combatives and weapons. 14 years old
Hate to be critical but this is not s very good version of this form it looks incredibly weak with no hip torque/snap which is inherrent in this kata, look at the shotokan versions much stronger.
In Shitoryu the stances are almost the same as in Shotokan, with only some differences in foot positioning (angles), the other differences is that Shotokan is a bit stiffer and more direct while Shitoryu uses some wider, circular movements in conjunction with linear, straight moves, whereas Gojuryu uses a lot more circular moves than even Shitoryu.
Yes, Naihanchi is an easy Kata to learn... But, the most difficult kata to master.. Doing a kata is not just copying movements and following them.. Niahanchi is the core kata of Shuri-te..
For Christ sake...I can do this easy.REALY? Idiot.Kata is a tool for learning, if you measure your skill by how it looks to someone else then that says a lot about you. There is no right way to do Kata, it is a tool for learning.Any real fighter dose not care if he does or does not conform to the general stanard, only that what he does is effective.
doing it is one thing, doing it right is another...using your hips is key to this kata...
in p.godan consentrate on the jump and the last few moves making sure all parts of your body are in line and that you should only see one arm and leg when looking at your stance from an angle
Im so glad i finally learned this kata!
