I worked as a missionary in an urban homeless shelter and I agree with Cenk. People see the homeless and they think that these people are uncivil and dangerous criminals. That simply isn't true. I was shocked at how polite so many were - even offering to clean up after others. Things were not as bad as you think, and most would complain about those unfortunate few who did do wrong.
Does the argument change if one realizes the church is only feeding the homeless to preach to them and if most didn't stay for the sermon they would stop feeding them?
They can't take the food to the homeless because their main goal is to bring sheep to jesus. You could put food in a bag and hand it to the homeless but then you don't get their souls.

The problem doesn' t lie with the act of feeding the poor. I mean homeless people shit everywhere. Crimes happen everywhere as well. You can't blame some place for bringing crime just because you feed them. The solution wouldn't be to shut down the whole operation, it would be to try to control the crowd, introduce security measures, install toilets. Of course, moving to other vicinities would be a solution but it would induce costs. And it would depend on different localities.

all this could be solved if they would just buy up some old building in the neighborhood and turn it into a homeless shelter. every reasonably sized city needs to have a homeless shelter. maybe this neighborhood already has one, but it sounds like they need a bigger one.
I think the churches should move to where the poor are. Christians shouldn't isolate inside a nice suburban bubble, or return to one when their "dirty work" is done. I propose that churches, by nature & function, shouldn't be in residentially zoned areas at all. They should be in commercial or industrial zoned areas, where their service to and work in COMMUNITY can be consistently done. Most suburban churches sit empty most of the time anyway & it's shame when people don't have a place to sleep.
I'm 100% with Cenk on this one. All of the charity work that I have done has been at churches and in buildings owned by churches.

The churches in this area really need to consider strong acts of civl disobedience this holiday season. Don't JUST continue as usual. Make it a point to have more homeless present than ever before. Fly them in from around the country. And don't just offer food. Give away some nice coleman tents so that they can set them up on peoples lawns, and maybe some shotguns so they can defend themselves when the pigs show up. Most of you people who are sitting comfortable in your cozy suburban home don't really know anything about being homeless or homeless people. The church has a moral responsibility not to create a hostile environment for others. What is a "bad" Christian? That statement reeks of someone that is trying to mock Christianity. Who cares if the Neighbors are Christians or not, Homeless people are vandalizing and comitting crimes. They have that right to complain.
I wish the church leaders and residents that had the problem had this discussion before getting the city involved. All of the turks had good suggestions and if the church and residents would have brainstormed, a compromise could have been made and some people that really need the help would have still gotten it.

If the homeless are causing a problem, I agree with Cenk - get security. Make sure the security keep the homeless on the grounds or make sure they leave from the community if are causing problems. It's the law in most places, no public sleeping, etc., if they are doing that they need to face the law not get their meals taken from them if they are innocently getting meals. I agree Cenk, it sounds really unchristian-like. Unless it's a gated comm., they can't keep people from their streets.

That is, consider a scenario in which social services are being offered to violent gang members and the family members of those gang members, and those services are not being offered IN THOSE GANG MEMBERS' NEIGHBORHOODS, but rather, your own by a local church. If any church invites trouble into an otherwise stable neighborhood, the residents have all justification to ask that the services be conducted elsewhere. It's not about looking down on someone, anyone, its about being reasonable...
If the residents really cared, they'd stop complaining from the comfort of their homes and get out and help these homeless, hungry people. No, that's not fair at all. In most communities (take for example Sacramento, CA) the homeless community has "moved into" certain areas of the city. In that case, the services provided need not be supplanted into my neighborhood needlessly. I am all for helping the less fortunate, but will not invite an increase in crime and vandalism. I agree with the message behind Cenk's thinking. however, he stumbled through this whole video. I think accusing "Christians" that he doesn't know are Christians that they are wrong in the community should not have been brought up at all. I agree with g1Chase357 that the police should step up to catch the vandals because it's part of their job. That's why we have police. And the homeless people are not the church's fault. The church is helping God's creation.

Think of it like a friend paying your debt to court and as a thank you, you help clean the garage. I worked as a missionary in an urban homeless shelter and I agree with Cenk. People see the homeless and they think that these people are uncivil and dangerous criminals. That simply isn't true. I was shocked at how polite so many were - even offering to clean up after others. Things were not as bad as you think, and most would complain about those unfortunate few who did do wrong.

They can't take the food to the homeless because their main goal is to bring sheep to jesus. You could put food in a bag and hand it to the homeless but then you don't get their souls.

The problem doesn' t lie with the act of feeding the poor. I mean homeless people shit everywhere. Crimes happen everywhere as well. You can't blame some place for bringing crime just because you feed them. The solution wouldn't be to shut down the whole operation, it would be to try to control the crowd, introduce security measures, install toilets. Of course, moving to other vicinities would be a solution but it would induce costs. And it would depend on different localities.

I think the churches should move to where the poor are. Christians shouldn't isolate inside a nice suburban bubble, or return to one when their "dirty work" is done. I propose that churches, by nature & function, shouldn't be in residentially zoned areas at all. They should be in commercial or industrial zoned areas, where their service to and work in COMMUNITY can be consistently done. Most suburban churches sit empty most of the time anyway & it's shame when people don't have a place to sleep.

I'm 100% with Cenk on this one. All of the charity work that I have done has been at churches and in buildings owned by churches.
Now perhaps none of those who complained were Christians. But Cenk is right, Christ did not call people to live comfortable lives. He called them to love God and to love their neighbors -- regardless of the personal cost.

The churches in this area really need to consider strong acts of civl disobedience this holiday season. Don't JUST continue as usual. Make it a point to have more homeless present than ever before. Fly them in from around the country. And don't just offer food. Give away some nice coleman tents so that they can set them up on peoples lawns, and maybe some shotguns so they can defend themselves when the pigs show up. Ok, that may be a little much, but you get the idea.

in one city, the cops came in the middle of the night to slash tents in a "tent city". the mayor of that city is a devout christian. here's someone with the actual power to do something, and he uses the police to destroy what little property they have left.

If the homeless are causing a problem, I agree with Cenk - get security. Make sure the security keep the homeless on the grounds or make sure they leave from the community if are causing problems. It's the law in most places, no public sleeping, etc., if they are doing that they need to face the law not get their meals taken from them if they are innocently getting meals. I agree Cenk, it sounds really unchristian-like. Unless it's a gated comm., they can't keep people from their streets.

That is, consider a scenario in which social services are being offered to violent gang members and the family members of those gang members, and those services are not being offered IN THOSE GANG MEMBERS' NEIGHBORHOODS, but rather, your own by a local church. If any church invites trouble into an otherwise stable neighborhood, the residents have all justification to ask that the services be conducted elsewhere. It's not about looking down on someone, anyone, its about being reasonable...

My church GOES to the homeless. We take food to them, then they dont have to come to us. Maybe God is directing the people of this church to serve the homeless in a more strategic way.

It is sad that many homeless people suffer life on the streets along with many mental disorders, however, for these reasons, homeless are more likely to be a nuissance and commit crimes. I think the homeless should be helped and offered opportunities, but the seedy element that follows the homeless should not be invited into the neighborhood where my children play and go unattended, and that is reasonable.

Someone really should do something to help those people as long as it's not going to inconvenience you, right? No, that's not fair at all. In most communities (take for example Sacramento, CA) the homeless community has "moved into" certain areas of the city. In that case, the services provided need not be supplanted into my neighborhood needlessly. I am all for helping the less fortunate, but will not invite an increase in crime and vandalism. Take for example the gang problem. Are you willing to invite gang members into your neighborhood in order to offer them social services?

Also, I DO work with the homeless and the mentally ill/developmentally disabled, and yes, I DO THINK it is unwise to invite indecent elements of that demographic into affluent neighborhoods. Try not to concise your line of reasoning in order to frame up a straw man enemy, friend.

People like you have already got pets (all the warmth and affection these old folks have left) removed from retirement communities and condos. The poor are next to be water hosed out of your life.
