  • Sounds good, but I still prefer my Vox tube amp.

  • You're technique is well practiced and clean. I can hear how much you love playing, in the music, and I can see it on your face. You should be proud. :) Great review too.

  • Love the video, you reek of eddie van halen!!! :) There are worse things in the world I suppose :p I hear some steve morse

  • Even with his guitar a little out of tune, Andy can sound better than a lot of players with their axes dead on 440. Amazing playing. (lets see your video mr. ijevtic)

  • What on earth did you just do @1.25 ?

  • out of tune dude

  • I was just wondering if you use alternate picking over economy picking on like three notes per string runs and other stuff because you also sweep and generally I find it very hard to combine the two (eg alternate picking and sweeping in one for solo), perhaps that's just my bad playing but just wondering, Big fan of DFU and A Disconcerting Amalgam!

  • What's wrong with that sound? Get a friggin' Blackstar.

  • Hi Andy ! Wow what sound !? So smooth and clean i love it !

But I'm french and I don't really understand the name of the pedal you use :-/ can you (Ho please) tell me the name of this pedal ?

    Keep rocki'n mate ;-)

  • @rogers3012 Pour la distorsion, il a utilisé le lapin Brown de Freakshow Effects et d'un compresseur pour la compression Keely

  • @rogers3012 in this vid i used a brown rabbit and a keeley compressor!

    cheers,

    A Wood

  • Hey Andy!, is the first clean melody you played a Chet Atkins songs? or inspired from him? Dude i cant get it outta my head!!

  • @MrCheese5 its just a simple redneck version of the jazz standard "Georgia"

    cheers!

    A Wood

  • It is nice to see a younger player with such feel and amazing phrasing. Andy you are one of the most amazing and tasteful players out there. I've become a fan.

    Cheers

  • Andy, how did you develop your insane two hand tap/sweep technique, and how do you just improvise them? Love your album and playing!

  • my mark4 sounds better

  • This sounds awsome!!!

Is the badger 18 loud enough to use it in a live situation?

  • Cat Scratch Fever hehehehhehe great man !!!!!!!

  • Andy, I really enjoy your wide range of style, technique and phrasing. I hate drawing comparisons but I hear an amalgamation of Albert Lee, Guthrie Govan, Jerry Reed, Eric Johnson, etc...within your playing, yet you still maintain your own sound. Quite impressive. I just purchased, "A Disconcerting Amalgam"....awesome!!! Hey man I know your busy but if you have a chance I'd like your opinion on my music.....myspace.com/theplectrist. All the best!!!!

  • I just love the versatility you demonstrate, especially when demoing this stuff , to many people go heavy metal freak out and we dont get to hear a half what anything can be done.

Love the playing Andy it is truely inspirational.

  • Holy Shit! Hoooot Playing!!!

  • Hi Andy, Just wanted to say how

much I love your playing. I find myself coming back to your videos again and again. You're a real inspiration.

    Cheers.

    Steve Laney.

  • @CuntreeBoy thanks steve!! i have enjoyed your vids as well dude!!

    A Wood

  • Hi Andy -- love the tones you're getting in this vid and I think your phrasing and note choices are very fresh and a welcome change from the shredder norm.

The impression I get from the vid is that for the early clean playing, like that sweep/tap lick at 1:26, you're not even using the Keeley yet. Is that correct? Also, when you do use it, is it last in the chain before the Suhr, and what are the settings?

  • @ginsuvideos your correct, no keeley on at that point. i use compressors right after the guitar, so first in the chain. thanks for your kind words!

    A Wood

  • Loving the guitar! What model is it?

  • great sound Andy. The amp sounds fantastic and with your unreal playing ability it really brings it over the top. Ive been trying to figure out what to get for my next amp and Im not sure about what to get. Im trying to decide between the Badger 30, Dr Z Maz Sr, Nolatone Tango 22 or a Reinhardt Sultan. I have been playing a Marshall JCM 900 since 1990, and picked up a Vox AC15 for ultra clean tone last year but I want a do it all amp. Any suggestion?

    Thanks!

  • @Jeffum111 all those amps are sick! not a bad choice to be made,

    A Wood

  • @downfromup Ya definitely all good choices. My personal recommendation would be the Dr Z Maz! I have the Maz 18 and it's beautiful!

  • You're pretty good, why do you dress like a asswhole?

  • @WeveGotNoTimeToLose whats an asswhole? is that like a whole ass? :)

    A Wood

  • @downfromup Haha no, sorry for the grammar, asshole as in the orifice on your body in which you secrete waste. Haha no just so mainstream generic dude, people dispute image, and honestly I don't, but it seems like you like your image or actually build towards it. I just think dressing and looking so generic is a waste.

  • @xmaxima1 Don't think Steve Vai would do too well with advanced Classical / Flamenco guitar. I'm sure he would agree. Steve Morse would be the closest to doing the most styles at a professional level.

  • Dudes, STop arguing about all this stuff..Enjoy whatever style you play as much as you can,and just have fun with it,..whether it's not 'technical' I love all styles..And i try hard to take as much information as I can from all those styles :) BTW..Andy Wood..You Rock :) Peace

  • @Jhey172 Exactly.

  • What's that weird sounding poing from 4:50 - 5:00 ? I heard the same thing when i tried this amp out. It's almost like a fizzy overtone or something.

  • this guitar and amp f'n sound awesome...he did a good job with this demo!

  • @downfromup The problem is you guys are referring to classical guitar as a style, instead of acknowledging the fact that it is the foundation of guitar and all styles of guitar. Many classical guitar players can read, play by ear, improvise, and notate any style of guitar at a much higher level than the best Jazz or untrained guitarist. Not too mention with better technique, tone, intonation etc. There is a lot out there, do your research, you might learn something.

  • @markb583 so your saying classical guitar is not a style??? i see what you are saying about it being the foundation, but you still must understand that it is a genre or a style, same as bluegrass or jazz or whatever. well at least to me it is. and at the end of the day tone and technique is subjective. Jeff Beck doesnt have "correct" technique but he is one of the greatest to ever play the instrument. you see where im coming from?

    A Wood

  • @markb583 I'm quite sure that someone who plays to this standard has encountered all kinds of guitar playing. I listen and watch all kinds of guitarists, genres and the instrument has been part of my life for 22 years. Being classically trained doesn't make you better or worse than anybody. So, do YOUR research and realise that Muddy Waters & Merle Travis impacted music as well as Segovia or Julian Bream. If it comes from the heart, that's what matters. I won't reply to an answer don't worry :)

  • @markb583 Actually, Jazz guitarists are far better at improv than classically-trained guitarists, and Jazz guitarists can play by ear very well. One of my college professors (I was a music major) said a Jazz musician can cross over to classical much better than a classical musician can cross to Jazz. And he has a point. What's more, classically trained musicians don't deal with modes, 9th, 11th, and 13th chords anywhere near as much as Jazz musicians. Btw, I'm classically trained, myself.

  • @organs I've been trying to think of how the comment (Classical switching over to Jazz is harder) could make any rational sense. The only thing I could think of is the holding of a pick might be awkward for some Classical players at first, BUT if you watch Spanish / Classical / Flamenco players like Pepe Romero, Paco De Lucia play with Jazz greats, they take Jazz to another level with their right hand technique and in my opinion destroy them!! That's the type of player I'm proud to be.

  • @markb583 Those are exceptional players, and for all we know, have a substantial amount of experience with Jazz. I have to wonder how many classical guitarists are invited to play with a Jazz great, don't fare so well in practice, and give up on the whole thing.

Finally, one thing I've noticed of really great players: they don't take pride in their talents and skills. They only demonstrate and enjoy the applause as it comes. They're not braggarts.

  • @organs a lot of Classical guitar repertoire from Brazil /South America is very Jazz oriented, it seems to be a very natural crossover. Composers like Garoto,Barrios,Villa Lobos are a lot of times writing nylon string, finger style Jazz ,dealing with 9th, 11th's,but with sheet music instead of charts. A lot of people just think Bach,Beethoven,Mozart when discussing Classical Guitar. Almost every style is within it, making Classical guitar not a style but the guitar in it's purist form to many.

  • @markb583 I fail to see the Jazz influences. I'm familiar with the music of Barrios Mangoré, and while I hear amazing passages, I don't notice any 9ths or 11ths. I actually think of J.S. Bach, Sor, and effectively Albéniz (since he was primarily a pianist) when I think of classical guitar. And it is a style. It doesn't cheapen it any by saying it's a style like Jazz, Salsa, Flamenco, Blues, and Rock are styles.

  • @organs Keep listening ;) Since you are a fan of Albeniz, you might like my video demo of Leyenda. Thanks.

  • @markb583 Seems u know it all. They have technical knowledge of some sort, and they can read but how many f them live by composing? Most of them live their live trying to play the work of others. Also it would be kinda funny to see them improvising. It is a way different world.

  • @markb583 Actually you're completely wrong. "Classical" is a musical period, spanning the 17th and 18th centuries. In fact, the guitar goes back 'til at least the 12th century and probably earlier.

Technique/ability is absolutely irrelevant, music is.

I am a piano player with 25 years experience playing some of the most difficult pieces ever. I couldn't write Beethoven's 4th Concerto, and I couldn't write Johnny B. Goode either. Both masterpieces that everyone should be able to enjoy

  • @buckachiddy I am aware of the periods of music and have a degree in "classical" guitar. More of the earlier Baroque period music is actually played on a LUTE not a guitar. Bach wrote for the LUTE, as well as other instruments. I don't just play music from the classical period, nor does really any guitarist. Since you seem to be interested most of my material is from the Romantic period. Maybe you could try to write a combination of Beethoven and Johnny B Goode. Think outside the box. ;)

  • Wow, Brent Mason must be an influence! Im just hearing the hotwired album in this video..

  • IMHO:

its all about practising, listening, playing life(shows), again practising, band rehearsals, again playin' life on stage in front of audience, being gifted, again practising (minimum 8 hours per day).

equippment is the least thing (IMO)

But industry will always tell you that you have to buy more and more of their gear...

  • I LOVE the riff at 2:00

    you're quite awesome!

  • damn dude your a beast on that guitar lol. ive been playing for 14 years and just heard of suhr 5 minutes ago so i decided to check some of their gear out and you now have a new fan.

  • Hi Andy. Thanks for sharing this... It is a really nice sounding amp but... Are 18w enough to not get muted by drums and bass onstage? Or it is an amp for home playing and rehearsals?

By the way,... amazing guitar technique ;-)

  • great stuff, thanks man. I thought your playing and the tone was best on the clean.

  • great sounds and playing!

  • This is great, but doesn't this say more about the guitar than the amp???

  • The tone when you were playing the Zeppelin riffs was AWESOME!

  • great tone! one question though: does it go to 11?

  • Comment removed

  • Andy, what's it like knowing that you and none of the other surh artists will ever be as good as Guthrie Govan? haha just messin. i LOVE your playing.

  • Ok, so who are the 9 @zzholes that vote dislike? I'm pretty sure that show's your intelligence level! Hey here's a tip DON'T GET ON YOUTUBE!

  • 9 people aren't good with a mouse and missed the Like button.

  • Keep doing what you do brother. You do it so well I love it!

  • Hey Andy! Love your album, can't stop listening to it! I hope to meet you at NAMM this year too. I wanted to ask what software do you use for video editing? Your demos look really cool and high quality.

    Cheers bro!

  • @markb583 trust me you dont wanna see me attempt classical. true classical guitar and sight reading on that level take a lifetime to master, i grew up playing bluegrass and country, but i love all types of music. i just cant think of anyone who can do everything ya know?

  • @downfromup Yeah I try to do it all, but some styles get left out these days practicing between teaching and gigs. Check some of my lesson videos if you would like, search Mark Bouras. Thanks

  • @downfromup You Sound amazing just the way you play Bro,You are just being yourself and you are being spontaneous about it..Keep up the Good Work Dawg

  • @downfromup dont sweat these dudes, THERE IS no one that can do everything, the only players that get close are guthrie govan and Shawn Lane, and both are COMPLETE MONSTERS, you have a great style............keep it up

  • @downfromup Andy, if you come by Chicago and give me a guitar lesson, I'll give you a primer on sight-reading... You can just head to the Plainfield School of Music and we'll convene there! Or just keep it real--love your stuff, man!

  • @downfromup Chris Broderick.

  • @Deritooo great metal, classical and jazz. never heard the guy do any bluegrass or country, so yet again no one can master everything. its simply impossible. one can get adept and even very good at most things, but lets be honest with ourselves here. everything....not so much

  • @downfromup ye, your right.

  • @downfromup

I think mastering every style is possible especially since classical and country/bluegrass are so closely related. It just that the cat who is doing it is not known yet (a little kid still woodshedding or some reclusive older dude).

Btw loved your playing on the Suhr Jam w Quayle, Graham, and Miller.

  • @downfromup Guthrie hehhehehehe except for the sight reading im not sure.!

  • @downfromup if we look at it realistically its TOTALLY impossible because there are A LOT of musical styles not just the western ones*which are a lot on their own jazz alone has like 30 styles in it* and more will keep coming because of the evolutionary nature of music..it is not important how many styles you know..it is much more important to know the styles that you like and express yourself using them..the man in the first comment was asking you something unreasonable

  • @downfromup Ignore him, musical sheets were NOT made for electric guitar. Electric guitar is much more expressive than what can be actual and currently written. You read a sheet and play guitar and you'll sound like a noob...

  • @GabrielKai I have to comment. Musical sheets are made for musicians, and so guitarists are not excluded from them. They are only a hindrance to those who are unaccustomed to sight-reading. That's not to say that those who can't sight-read are inferior (Beatles, anyone?), but the ability or inability to read sheet music should not affect the talents of a guitar player.

  • @organs Budy, I do read music, and my main instrument is eletric guitar, Music sheets were NOT made for eletric guitar and they should not be used when playing guitar UNLESS the player is a virtuoso. Otherwise it will soudn saltless. I know what I'm saying and I could explain in detail WHY, but I have better things to do, Cheerios.

  • @GabrielKai Well, I have a spare moment, so I'll respond. I also read sheet music, and I can explain in detail that there's no reason an electric guitar player shouldn't read sheet music, regardless if the player is a virtuoso or not. It's absurd to think that something like being able to read sheet music should include or exclude ANYONE from playing ANY kind of instrument. You can see me post on the Petrucci forum if you want to get into it "in detail".

  • @organs Man you seriously don't play electric guitar :/ or you'd know what I'm talking about.

  • @GabrielKai I do play electric guitar. And it's ridiculous to presume that learning a song by sheet music will leave you unable to play the song "with feeling". Many of the Jazz standards I know, I learned from sheet music.

That said, I understand few bands, if any, that play electric instruments use sheet music and detailed charts. Even so, if they DO use sheet music, how are they any the worse for it? I myself at least sketch out chords and keys on the beats of scribbled measures.

  • @organs Dude, you're a complete newb sorry I don't have time for this.

  • @GabrielKai How am I a "newb"? Or are you just making blasé statements because you can't defend your point anymore?

  • @organs I already explained you briefly and you refuse to understand, for the 3rd time I do not have time for you, Cheerios.

  • @GabrielKai "I do not have time for you" does not qualify as an explanation. And it's "cheerio". "Cheerios" is a breakfast cereal.

  • @organs My friend you're seriously dumb :/ . Usually people say Cheers, but as a joke people say Cheerios wich are the cereals, jesus man... I already explained before, you refused to understand, I ain't explaining again because yes def I don't have time for you sigh.

  • @GabrielKai First, I'm not your friend. Second, as a joke, people say "cheerio", like the token British farewell. Third, your explanation is flawed at best, but it's not at its best. Fourth, if you can only back up your argument by insulting me or insisting that you don't have time (something you've said multiple times), then you can't back up your argument, period. Guitarists are musicians, electric and otherwise, therefore they may read sheet music. Get over it.

  • @downfromup Heard about Guthrie Govan?

  • @IverDaBest yes, i have done several clinics and shows with guthrie. i will be playing with Guthrie at namm again this year. he is a good friend and a fantastic player, but i think he would tell you the same thing im saying, no one can MASTER everything. Guthrie in all his extremely ridiculous abilities still doesnt do certain types of playing, like Paco style flamenco for example. I get disappointed in guys looking for a "best" There just isnt, I prefer to use the term "favorite" over "best"

  • @downfromup I understand what you mean :-)

  • @downfromup Couldnt agree more! Though Guthrie is truly insane.. Fantastic playing by the way, Very impressive!

  • @downfromup STEVE MORSE

  • @downfromup gutrhie can do everything

  • @downfromup 2 words. Steve Vai

  • @markb583 he's not a classical guitarist man. how can you ask this kind of question? similarly, can a classical guitarist do jazz improvisation or fusion improv over changes?

besides this video is just a demo. andy is just too humble, check out his playing in video called 'suhr mega jam' now that's what I called creativity and phrasing! i was blown away

  • @markb583

    he's not a classical player

    what r u talking about

this is not a talent contest

    go somewhere else buddy

    dont be jealous

  • @markb583 What? Stupid challenge dude! YOu think classical music is the best? and sight reading guys are better? You sound very insecure...Now I challenge you to play all styles of music.. lets see..

  • @markb583 And I'm curious to see how well classical guitar players with a sheet in front of them with no soul, can do what he's doing right there.... I WANT to see that demo.

  • i dont get it every time u get a product guy sellin yer stuff he carnt play jak shite this time hes tottaly great but im bidding on ebay bay for a gibby so tarra

  • I bet you could a make any amp sound fantastic! Great stuff.

  • I hate you :o)))) is there a style you can't play?????

fantastic demo and fantastic playing, are you endorser for Suhr?

    cheers

  • Wow, awesome demo! Also, what's that jazzy song you play first on the clean channel?

  • Hey - are any of the pedals in the loop or are they both up front?

  • Hey Mr Andy Wood ! am very amazed by your shred playing especially the country style of thingy your doing. was thinking if there are any plans to do a DVD instructional on your style of playing?

  • this guy is unreal! first class playing! really love it

  • hey dude you got a nice control over your instrument i like a lot you´re playing

  • :0 Holy !%!@#$@!%

  • Any chance of you putting out an instructional video of any kind in the future? I totally dig your style and licks. You have single-handedly made me want to learn more hybrid picking techniques and country style runs. I have been listening to you and Johnny Hiland like non stop now. You both are so versatile and show that we should all be more well rounded players.

  • You Monster...

  • plush!!!!!!! wooohooooo

  • hey andy, i had a guitarworld magazine and i saw you on one the the pages about your solo albums and stuff so i decided to check out how you play and you play pretty good. you played better than i though.what diezel amps do you use

  • Andy wood coooooool

  • I Hate Jason Spencer

  • Great playing. I am now going to check out your solo stuff....Love the sound of that guitar and the amp is cool as hell. Thanks for the amazing Demo.

  • dude, you ROCK!

  • You're becoming one of my new favourite guitarists... :P (Jonny333 from the Diezel forum btw :) peace brother! )

  • Whats the new Down From Up album?

  • awesome jazz lick on that neck pup

  • Really dig the jazz stuff man

  • That Amp, Comp, and Brown Rabbit (What duce?) sounds so fucking sexy.

  • holy shit what a player

  • Certainly one of the best guitar players I've seen here on youtube!

  • Andy I enjoy your playing, it makes me laugh, cause your so unbelievable good.

What can you not play I think than.

    cheers

  • Hi Andy, please, could you say me what color are the guitar shown in this video?

    Thanks you and best regards.

  • wheres that song from that starts at 1:57 lol

  • This is STP Plush at 3:25

  • @tctaylor3 What song is at 3:38 or is that more of plush?

  • @strats4ever321 Yeah. That is the chorus section of Plush.

  • what song is that again at 3:25

  • Stone temple pilots not sure the song but I know it's them haha

  • plush - STP

  • plush!!!! omg how sick

  • Hey Andy, I really love your playing on the solo album. Would you mind telling me what amp or amps you used? Also which pickups do you have in the suhr? Thanks!

  • no no dude thank you! amps were 99 percent diezel. einstein and herbert for leads. the pickups are ssh+ in bridge and ssv in the neck.

    cheers!

    A Wood

  • @downfromup thanks so much for the reply! 11th hour is my favorite track, very cool variety of solos. Also to my knowledge you have two Suhrs now, how are they different?

    Thanks, Ben

  • hey andy . im your big fans now ahhahaha all of your video is so godammit amazing you know hahaha. oh i want to ask something can suhr amp use for hi gain ?

  • 6:18 yessir

  • No Suhr gear can be found in Hong Kong.

  • i see vault boy xD

  • stuff u did with the clean was pretty sweet. cuz i study jazz.. lol thx for playing clean tone alot.. cuz thats what i really want to hear the most.. lol

  • Does Peter Diezel get pissed when you demo Suhr amps? :)

  • lol no Peter is a great guy and he knows i love his amps too. Im lucky to work so closely with 2 top notch companies

    A Wood

  • It's like an amp-maker menage a trois.

  • looks like he's having fun with it :D

  • nobody cares!

  • Is the riff at 1:08 from anything. Not to be cliche but...tabs? Really want to play jazzy stuff like that.

  • its the jazz standard, georgia

    A Wood

  • hey andy. just interested to know which suhr pickups you have in your modern, they sound absolutely fantastic!

    thanks.

  • im using the ssh+ in the bridge and the ssv in the neck position. you can contact suhr about the specific wiring of the electronics.

    cheers

    A Wood

  • not my style but i think this guy is a good player. i think suhrs are great guitars but i dont know if i want one. but yeah good player

  • Way to go Andy.... Soul and speed AND versatility is quite rare these days!

  • I have just found you Andy and i have to say my first impression is, you are amazing!!!

Another suhr player i am sure you know is the amazing Guthrie Govan but i would happily leave Guthrie if i knew you were playing in the same buliding.

    Namm 2010?

  • ohhh hell be at namm :D

  • Dude, go to Nashville in the Grand Ol' Opry and you'll be freaking out at how many guitar players over there can blow Guthrie Govan away in chicken picking guitar. That's where Guthrie got that style. If you've heard of roy clark or even jazz guitarists like Larry Carlton or al di meola, those guys would blow you away. Dont ever say there is only one great guitar player. There are numerous of these gifted individuals and they all are that good.

  • I know of many Great guitarists and it is not often i get blown away by any one, Al di Meola is great but not for me i am talking about Andy has a combination of styles of playing that really compliment each other, Rock - country - heavy rock and more it is the combination that makes Andy stand out from the crowd for me.

Guthrie has his Rock Fusion and is great but again not for me it is his tone and approach to fusion i don't like.

There is not only one great for me there is a small few.

  • melo is one of my favorite guitar players of all time. couldnt agree more

  • Lol Is that a Fallout3 bobblehead in front of that monitor?

  • @ShredST

yes it looks like it! fallout 3 rocked - played thru game twice and all expansions

    :-)

  • Nice Country pickin :-)

  • What pickups is it on the Modern? I have the badger 30.

  • cool stuff andy!, what is your settings on the amp?

  • in which section? i change them throughout the vid, i think i even tell what they are in certain parts.

    A Wood

  • Andy..you are my newest hero on guitar. I saw an ad for you in Guitar World and looked you up. Man you have got it. You combine technique with feel and melody. You are a rare quality and you are my hero.....Ooops...already said that didn't I?

  • Nice job Andy, but every amp you play sounds badass. :)

Go the DFU cd - awesome. I really like your country style playing too. I wish I could do that!

  • Awesome playing, saw you in a guitar magazine add. Need to buy an album.

  • andy rocks it! get that hair channel up and running and those idiots can go and watch that, while the rest of us can just continue to enjoy your great playing.
