hi!would you recommend the 24-105 f4 as a walk around lens?coz i just bought a 7d but im still confuse which lens im gonna buy.i am thinking between the 17-55 f2.8 or the 24-105 f4..image quality wise..which is much better?thanks!
Hi, just a quick question- Is the price difference between the non -L and the L version justified? I'm no pro photographer, I use a 550d only starting out, but it would be awesome to have a good macro lens.
Also, is it difficult to get good pictures handheld? as you said ,
"@falopio2007 .... because you cannot control macro hand held anyway.... "
@lumos2maxima You have to get fast shutter speeds or use a tripod with the non L version but I would recommend it. You can control the non IS version with a flash or high ISO. I have learned a lot since I first got the lens. I would buy the same one today. I don't think the L version is worth double the price unless money is not a problem.....then get the L version.
@nate42nd hmmm would a flash ring help with that? and anyway it's very sunny where i live all year round so unless i'm shooting at night it wouldn't be a problem. And yeah since i'm a uni student money is a pretty big problem LOL. I'll try out the non-L version to see if i like it :)
@falopio2007 If you have theb money, get the L lens. It's not going to be very much better than the non-is because you cannot control macro hand held anyway. Actually, I would still get the non IS if I were doing it again....and money really isn't a problem. It would be a good choice either way. All the best
This has to do with a second diaphragm blade that closes when you focus more closely. When you turn your focus ring you can actually see the diaphragm blade close when you look inside the front element.
Anyway, this 100mm is a great lens! I have the 100mm f2.8 L IS version. Same optical quality but has weathersealing and IS. I'm jealous you have a 7D, atm i only have a 500D! Check out my flickr profile if you want, username is: keldererik
24-105 is f/4 and the 100mm is f/2.8. So your 24-105 is not your fastest lens (as in taking the most light).
Macro lenses lose light as focused more closely. I'll skip you the real reason, but suffice it to say that as magnification goes up, the light has to be spread further.
Canon EOS cameras don't show the true f/stop as these lenses are focused more closely. As one focuses to 1:1, one loses about 1 1/2 stops of light, but EOS cameras keep reporting the same f/stop regardless.
@keldererik I'm aware of the magnification factor and loosing light. It's something i don't i\understand completely but shouljd read about. Maybe I will do a video on it when I learn! It's a fun lens anyway. When I really want a COOL image I reach for the 100mm macro!!!!!
@WestCoastMods When I really want to have FUN and get some killer images....I go for the 100mm macro. It delivers every time. You really have to use it differently from other lenses btu once you get the hang of it, there's nothing better. You should check out my eyeball I just put on Flickr. Amazing.
@kirbyboy75 This 100mm is SO much fun to use. As soon as you can spare the money I would look at this lens. Endless fun. Winter is here and you can take pics of anything. Abstract is easily done with it too. Thanks man.
@nate42nd yeah but first im saving up for the 50mm f/1.8 because i am a student and dont have that much money, and people say that the 50mm's are a neccessity to your kit bag. I posted the out of focus christmas tree lights on your flickr group
@kirbyboy75 Okay, that's you. I cannot keep track of who is who. The 50mm is a GREAT next lens. It will do wonders for your images for 100 dollars or less. All the best!
@kirbyboy75 so true with regards to the 50mm lens but you can buy cheap macro extension tubes from amazon for like £7 couple that with your 50mm and you will be able to get very close to your subject...check out my macro shots on our flickr group my name is FormatPG..I used the 18-135mm zoom lens with and without the ext tubes so no real reason you cant try out macro work!
@carperpaul This is true. You can get in close to subjects without a macro lens. Extension tubes are a less expensive option. It's a lot of fun to do close up stuff.
Good video

f/4 on any lens lest in the SAME light if it let in more then your exposure will be wrong .....
f/4 is f/4 for more light you have to open up...........

you talking that the 17-55 f2.8 lets less light in than the 24-105 f4 ???!!!! wtf
Shmenman 1 year ago
@Shmenman No, I am just saying from what I have seen the glass in the "L" lens seems different even with both lenses at F/4.

Hi, thank you for your review. I'm planning to get the 100 mm f 2.8L IS. Do you think it is a better price/quality choice? Thanks!
