Part 2 : Also, Etta was discovered by Johnny Otis (He either saw her performing at a club or she auditioned for him after one of his shows depending on who you ask.) and her career was going strong long before she was signed to Chess. Whether Beyonce's performance is good or bad is something I don't think about--I'm too engrossed in the movie as a whole. I'm just grateful that somebody, anybody wanted to tell the Chess Records story.
I loved this movie. But though they say the story is "fairly accurate", the real story is that Etta and Chess probably didn't have a "thing" like they're intimating here and in "Who Do You Love", the other Chess biopic (Also, "Who" has Bo Diddley, which "Cadillac" doesn't)--it's a plot twist added for flavor (and Etta was married--when she got busted for heroin, her husband took the rap and spent years in prison so she wouldn't have to go through the ordeal of jail--a loving sacrifice for sure)
Beyonce is one of the best singers ever & people have the nerve to say she can't. I mean I understand if you don't like her, not everyone has to like her but you can't deny the fact Beyonce has some real vocals & if you don't that is pure hating.

Jennifer Hudson was a first time actress, and she completely overshadowed everyone else in 'Dreamgirls'. for a girl who never acted before to completely take command of a movie over a singer who had already done a few movies says alot. beyonce needs to face reality. she is no actress. not in the least.

Hey I appreciate your passion for this topic and for Beyonce. But you gotta be kidding with the "she's trying to take Halle's spotlight." That's one of the silliest things I've ever heard. Critics are always talking about how Beyonce doesn't let anyone shine. And yet you seem to think that ONLY Halle should be the premiere black actress in Hollywood. I swear some of you "non-lovers" need to get a point, stick to it and make it reasonable. Otherwise you just come off sounding a bit loony.
To be honest with you I never thought Halle Berry was that good of an actress either. She can't carry a film in my opinion, I only liked her in maybe a handful of movies she's done. Beyonce on the other hand, her voice usually irritates me whether she's singing or speaking, and that's why I can't except her as an actress. There is also nothing special about her performance on screen, though I haven't seen Cadillac Records yet so the jury is still out on that one.
Just something to consider-- JenniferH won because of her singing performance. Her acting was amateurish most of the film with a few exceptions. She shone when she sang. Beyonce has a commitment to being a triple threat -- and the weakest skill, which she owns, is her acting. She's grown LEAPS and BOUNDS -- that's what an artist who's about her craft DOES. This film reflects her hard work. She sings these songs with the same energy, and sass of Etta. She CAN'T be Etta - she doesn't need to.
Great post, noiretoile. I've applauded Beyonce for recognizing that, though she isn't horrible, she does need help with her acting. It appears that she's gotten it and has been applying it to each new role. Of course there will be some who will see the improvement, but will only wish to say they saw nothing. She clearly loves what she does and it'd make sense for anyone to appreciate that.
Something for you to consider-singers win Academy Awards in the musical category, actors when in the acting category. She won for best supporting actress, period. People need to realize that and move on.

How do you know Beyonce was horrible as Etta. Did you know Etta James? Probably not so stop hating. I like B's music. Some of the comments that I hear she's made has made me sometimes see her in a negative light, but I try to keep in mind that I don't know B and that I don't know if the comments are true, Anyway, this is about whether or not she was convincing in her role as Etta. Jennifer Hudson was a first time actress, and she completely overshadowed everyone else in 'Dreamgirls'. for a girl who never acted before to completely take command of a movie over a singer who had already done a few movies says alot. beyonce needs to face reality. she is no actress. not in the least.

Hey I appreciate your passion for this topic and for Beyonce. But you gotta be kidding with the "she's trying to take Halle's spotlight." That's one of the silliest things I've ever heard. Critics are always talking about how Beyonce doesn't let anyone shine. And yet you seem to think that ONLY Halle should be the premiere black actress in Hollywood. I swear some of you "non-lovers" need to get a point, stick to it and make it reasonable. Otherwise you just come off sounding a bit loony.

To be honest with you I never thought Halle Berry was that good of an actress either. She can't carry a film in my opinion, I only liked her in maybe a handful of movies she's done. Beyonce on the other hand, her voice usually irritates me whether she's singing or speaking, and that's why I can't except her as an actress. There is also nothing special about her performance on screen, though I haven't seen Cadillac Records yet so the jury is still out on that one.

Just something to consider-- JenniferH won because of her singing performance. Her acting was amateurish most of the film with a few exceptions. She shone when she sang. Beyonce has a commitment to being a triple threat -- and the weakest skill, which she owns, is her acting. She's grown LEAPS and BOUNDS -- that's what an artist who's about her craft DOES. This film reflects her hard work. She sings these songs with the same energy, and sass of Etta. She CAN'T be Etta - she doesn't need to.

Great post, noiretoile. I've applauded Beyonce for recognizing that, though she isn't horrible, she does need help with her acting. It appears that she's gotten it and has been applying it to each new role. Of course there will be some who will see the improvement, but will only wish to say they saw nothing. She clearly loves what she does and it'd make sense for anyone to appreciate that.

I'm interested in seeing how many who are hatin on Beyonce's performance in this movie actually saw the whole movie? I'm not a Beyonce fan but I have to give her all the credit in the world for this movie. She was finally able to shed all of her "Beyonceness" and really take on this role and do Etta big time justice. I give her mad props for this one in both acting and vocals. Jennifer Hudson she's not but she's not trying to be either.
