Jim Lounsbury's not kissing Linda Darnell had nothing to do with her drinking. It had to do with the fact that Jim was a married man, and Linda had a reputation of seducing many men over the years. You must realize that in the 1950's and 1960's, married men did not want their wives and kids to see "daddy kissing a movie star". Incidentally, Linda and Jim were the same age. Linda only looks older because of her hat, coat and weight. She was one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood.
It is really sad, Linda was a nice woman who like many in Hollywood got tossed out at a certain age. She is only around 40 here and looks older. 40 year old women today look younger, dress younger and act younger. But in the 50's most smoked and drank too much. It's a shame because she was a nice person.
@GPa2010, I exaggerated a little for comedic effect when I said that Jim withdrew in disgust from the stench of the booze on Linda's breath. What is obvious is that Miss Darnell came in for a kiss & received a firm handshake from Jim instead. By the early 60's she was pretty much washed up & it was common knowledge in Hollywood that she was an alcoholic. Even in this clip her words are slightly slurred. She was still very beautiful & appeared in several good (if minor) films. RIP Linda Darnell!
@ThorSmith Thanks!! Yes I agree with you. I was thinking maybe you had some inside info or were maybe in the group of youngsters at this event. ( I would of been about 10 yrs old round this time).
Yes, very obvious the host turned her gesture down. At the end though, I notice Ms. Darnell won't take 'no' for an answer as she gives the Host a nice kiss on his cheek. And yes...RIP Linda Darnell.
Poor Linda Darnell had definitely seen better days. It's obvious she had thrown back a few here. Notice how she reached in for a friendly kiss & Jim Lounsbury gave her a firm handshake instead, withdrawing in disgust from the stench of the booze. But Linda being the professional she was soldiered on & effectively promoted her charity. I recommend the book "Hollywood Beauty: Linda Darnell & The American Dream" by Ronald L. Davis to anyone interested in her life. A tragic beauty. TY DwighttFrye.

Dear ThorSmith...I'm just wondering on what you base your statement of the Host's turning from Ms. Darnell because of her boozy breath??
Thanks!
