this has always been my favorite tournament, so many epic forms, so many epic competitors - Double D's form is my personal fav I think, and of course the announcing deserves a mention :P
The three way tie was Kim Do, Jon Valera, and Richard Brandon (wushu). David was the only one that didnt tie. I thought DD was definitely a contender for the win.
You guys have to realize that this video is 10 years old. Tricking was not what it is today. Therefore the commentators just called everything aerials, because that's what they saw - aerial maneuvers.
@birdhouse555 aerial is known as a cartwheel with no hands, done in karate and gymnastic forms, and its also known as a maneuver, like when a fighter jet does a barrel roll to dodge a missile, its called an aerial maneuver...
@OldSkoolKarate ... ah, thanks for clarifying that! I have always been wondering over the years how the "Sideswipe" terminology changed from aerial switch to a super laid-back 540. Thank you!!!
this is the "original" version of a sideswipe. the modern day version hadn't been done yet. an oldskool sideswipe is basically an aerial landing on the leg you push off with.
Haha, "a huge aerial to start". Its a freakin' backflip.

@stylizhmathias /facepalm
aerial
reaching far into the air; high; lofty
It's not like the tricking community invented the word...

who did he tie with?
iflyforsj 3 years ago
It was a three way tie with Kim Do, David Douglas, and Mike Chat. I believe David Douglas won, but this form was still epic.
OldSkoolKarate 3 years ago
I believe the tie was actually between JV, DD, and Kim Do. Chat didn't compete in 98 as Camp Chat was the week before this event.

I remember seeing this tape. it was jon valera, kim do, and david douglas.
the most interesting part to me at the time (and now still) is @ 1:08 . but anthony atkins is the master of what i call the "double tommy kick"

no the old school sideswipe is todays suicide swipe, you turn the opposite direction of that of the aerial switch.
MitsuGTO885 4 years ago
I saw nothing that resembles a sideswipe, not a 540 of any kind in that.
And yes i cant believe how horible those commentators were.

The modern sideswipes evolved from this original sideswipe, hence its variation.
