I HATE her performance as Rose as a whole but I love her Rose's Turn. As much as I lvoe Patti LuPone, Patti went in the completely wrong direction for this number in my opinion
Bernadette was the best Mama Rose I've ever seen. She made her human and vulnerable and you realized the mom was the one with all the talent-that she really could have been something. Just so powerful when Gypsy walks out and says "You'd have really been something, Mama" and you come to the realization that, yes, if Rose had had someone to push her she would have been something.
And she really owned this role-and was robbed of her Tony.
I cannot believe that she was sick during this performance! I know that I could never sing like this if I were sick...I was losing my voice during the run of a show almost a year ago, and was doing everything in my power (including sucking on lemon wedges) between scenes - sometimes in between appearances onstage during the same scene - and my voice was pretty weak at the end of the play. Bravo Bernadette! This is what makes a true star.
I'll put aside the fact that I disagree IMMENSELY (since Peters was mind-blowing in this role), just based on the roles and shows. "Promises, Promises" isn't a particularly great show, nor is Fran a particularly deep, iconic character. Whereas "Gypsy" is probably the best musical ever written, and Rose the most complex and iconic female musical character.
what i love most about bernadette in this role is the sadness i hear. everywhere else i hear anger, and maybe a bit of insanity. NOt so much in this clip, but certainly in others of hers, Bernadette's "well" before "someone tell me" has intense emotion packed into it
I love Bernadette. She's fantastic, and she is Broadway. And she does a great job singing this song because her voice is great. But I don't think Rose suited her. Out of all the Roses I've seen, Patti LuPone is still Rose for me, especially in "Rose's Turn." But LuPone's triumphant performance in a role, I believe, she was born to play, doesn't take away the fact that Peters is a force and has earned her place as a Broadway legend. She's just not my Rose. But still wonderful.

I guess you just had to be there or something, but not one YouTube clip or recording has led me to believe that Bernadette was anything more than miscast in this role. I absolutely adore her and when she's right, she's right. Just not in GYPSY.
I love Bernadette Peters. She has a fabulous voice and is quite an effective actress. My issue with her as Mama Rose is that she looks too young. I realize that she is actually the appropriate age, but she looks like a 30 year old woman in this video.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Oh my...how many excuses do people have to make? She was totally miscast and too small in every way for this huge role. Peters did not have the acting ability and that is no insult..few actresses can perform this role. I love her and in the right part, she has no peer but this was painful. I cringed at every second of her performance and she is the only Rose to not make me cry during You'll Never Get Away From Me.
@pudgeuncle Um...Arthur Laurents was the one who insisted on Bernadette playing Mamma Rose. Also, June Havoc went on record as saying Bernadette was the most like her Mother out of all the actresses to ever play Rose. I think they know what they are talking about more than you. And it is LAUGHABLE to say that Bernadette did not have the acting ability to play this role. She is so layered and deep. I guess to be taken seriously as an actress, you have to yell and scream and camp it up like Patti.
@ctranbaby I don't have a precise source to produce, but it was widely circulated at the time, because Bernadette was the first actress to portray Rose that June Havoc actually spoke to. She said it was because Peters' performance was closest to their actual mother.
@ctranbaby Google is (thank God) not yet an omniscient, all seeing, all hearing, recorder of all things everywhere, private as public. Is possible that Google was not present at and so privy to June Havoc's comment to BP ! Perhaps June meant that her mother Rose was not (as Roz's and Bette's portrayal of her when the girls were young) unflappably comic pushy as a stage mother . . . more poignantly tragic pushy. Having experienced being talented yet lacking resources to win: coach/agent/$88.
I'm going to have to agree. Like Roz, Angela and Tyne before her, she brings a sincere, realistic performance of Rose. Sure her voice is too soft and not as powerful as Ethel, Bette, Patti and Lisa Kirk (voice-dubbing actress for Roz in the 60's version of "Gypsy") but she does emotionally ground Rose in this performance.
when u take acting classes and then u see bernadette peters on stage, u just understand how great it is to see someone who always acts in the moment and does everything u learn that makes acting what it truly is. she exemplifies technique and what its really all about, and because of that we get real humane character from her

Bernadette is shite in this role. There, I Said it!!! Patti is amazing in this role; Read ARTHUR LAURENTS' new book: Mainly on Directing - then you'll know all the shit that both Laurents and LuPone went through; and all the useless time and effort that didn't go into Sam Mendes' pathetic revival of Gypsy (2003) above with Ms Peters who was worse than Rosalind Russell in the 1962 film version of the show.
Rosalind Russell was a magnificent Rose -- She can actually *act,* unlike many of the self-indulgent histrionic hams (Midler, Merman, and sometimes Lupone) who just over-act everything for the sake of getting a laugh.
Bernadette is a brilliant actress. She was still very sick during this preview, and probably should not have been performing at the time, but she still did.
Mendes is a great director, but his "Gypsy" was a bit sloppy. Still, Bernadette nailed it.
@DivaBehavior can i just say that i adore the fact that you have not only used histrionic in a sentence, but you used decent unforced alliteration with it? the poet in me wants to kiss your feet
@DivaBehavior Arthur Laurents said in an interview that he gave notes to Sam Mendes but Mendes decided to stay with his own "concept". Any faults of Mendes' Gypsy weren't Bernadette's fault, but Mendes'.
@victoriaindigo This is true...however, let's not forget, Laurents opted *not* to direct this "Gypsy", because he wanted to see what another Director would do with it. Then, he proceeded to try to tell Mendes what to do. Notes are one thing, but Laurents was trying to direct Mendes on directing. Contrary to what Laurents believed, Mendes does have the musical in his bones.
But yes, your main point is correct. Bernadette wasn't at fault for anything, and Laurents praised her work in the show.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@boynamedalexxx I agree that Laurents decided not to do Gypsy, he said that in a Theater Talk interview, I don't remember the exact details, but in any case he decided not to do it.
Personally I don't think Mendes has the musical in his bones. I recall the reviews when Mendes' Gypsy came out. Most of them focused on the fact that Mendes was directing and staging as if he was still on a film set.
In any case I was just happy that AL validated Bernadette!
@victoriaindigo Mendes has a different take on the musical material he directs. He most definitely has it in his bones. I saw Mendes' "Gypsy"...I was 13, and it was a totally mesmerizing experience.
Oh, and Laurents should validate Peters; it was his idea to cast her in the first place. Early on, LuPone expressed interest in playing Rose in this revival, and Sam Mendes was, apparently, somewhat interested in her, but Laurents forbid it.
@DivaBehavior I'm just curious- did you actually see Merman as Rose? Unfortunately I didn't, but everyone I've spoken to who actually saw Ms. Merman live said that she was NOT the ham that revisionists have labeled her. There are a few audio clips of Merman live as Rose, and, from what I've heard, I think that her acting was the most real, and the least overacted. Maybe you should check them out.
@DivaBehavior Hey they were all good! THey all had a different version of Rose. BTW This is supposed to be Rose's psychotic break song. The point of the song is to show her slowly deteriorating character and not an elegant song by any means
@fountainchain126 If you read Laurents' book, then you'd know he loved Bernadette in the role, and didn't think she was the problem.
Plus, don't just take Laurents's side because he wrote "GYPSY," he's very egotistical and immature. It's ALL about Arthur to him. He would still be talking shit on Patti if they hadn't patched things up.
@fountainchain126 Um, f you actually read Arthur Laurents book, he also PRAISED Bernadette's performance as Rose and had nothing but admiration for her. It was Sam Mendes he had a problem with, not Bernadette. Also, it was Arthur who insisted Bernadette play Rose. LuPone was suggested at the time and he chose Bernadette. For his "revenge production" he cast Patti. Arthur just wanted to stick it to Mendes. Had Arthur directed Bernadette's Gyspy, Patti would never have played Rose. Period.
@Brathford Plus, Laurents could have directed it in '03 if he wanted, he just chose not to since he said he wanted to see what another Director would do with the material. Then, he continually tried to tell Mendes what to do through the whole rehearsal process. So, when the final production still didn't meet his 'standards,' he blabbed to the world about how Mendes doesn't have the musical 'in his bones.' Laurents is extremely talented, but his personality has needed a makeover for a long time.
And behind all the anger and aggression Bernadette Peters brought to the part, you could sense that she was a real person with dreams of her own, and feel compassion and, yes, admiration for her. A night I will never forget.
They say everyone's first Mama Rose is their favorite. Well, I saw this production when its run was briefly extended and I was BLOWN AWAY. I had never seen the show before--a Gypsy virgin--and I was almost in tears throughout. Tears of joy. So many phrases I knew but had no idea were from Gypsy ("Sing out Louise!"). I had thought "Everything's Coming Up Roses" was a cheerful song; this production revealed the nightmarish stage mother behind it.
now, im nothing but a backstage dresser, but this video just mad bernie go from my least favorite to my most! she just completley captured rose! rose is breaking down and giving a performance. and her anger and bitterness.... ugh, magnificent.
Bernadette Peters is one of my favorite Broadway actresses. Her talents are incredible! Her voice is so powerful and she pours so much of herself into every role she plays that Bette and Patti just can't even begin to compare to the Great Bernadette Peters.
Bernadette Peters is one of my favorite Broadway actresses. Her talents are incredible! Her voice is so powerful and she pours so much of herself into every role she plays that Bette and Patti just can't even begin to compare to the Great Bernadette Peters.
I've spent the last hour looking at different videos of Patti and Bernadette doing this role and I've finally made my decision. I like Patti's voice better and Bernadette's acting better. So If I had to pick one.... I think I would go with Patti but its a hard choice!
Bernadette being spectacular as always! She is such an insparation to young actresses I should know I was cast as the Witch for a production of Into the Woods! I was absolutely thrilled b/c I LOVE Sondheim and I LOVE Bernadette, they are incredible and have helped me to become a better actress! I will be a Broadway Baby as Bernadette says! I love ya Bernadette, keep going strong girl!!
Poor Bernadette just never had a chance with that staging. You can tell every move was choreographed. It doesn't flow naturally like most of the others. Once she recovered and got to do her own thing, she was wonderful! I think she's more realistic than Patti. I wish there was a way for Bernadette to play the role again in good heath and without a director who didn't know what he was doing. The whole production was just very bland besides Bernadette.
@ChrisRandomSinger Sam Mendes is an AMAZING director of both Stage and Screen. He had a different take on "Gypsy" and it was incredible. I like Laurents' productions, too, obviously (hell, he wrote it), but he's too cranky all the time. Read his book, he's obnoxious, but there's lots of valuable info...I love what Mendes and Peters did with "Gypsy"; it wasn't a typical revival and took the story to different places...Mendes has a very unique touch, and examined the show like a play.
I thought Bernadette was great and I've enjoyed many of Mendes' films and other shows, but there was just something off about this particular version that I just can't pinpoint. He seemed lost here for some reason. I don't know why, but he did. I find Laurents to be a bit much, too, but I actually agree with most of his points about this Gypsy. It felt very slow to me. Just my opinion, though.
what you guys dont understand is that patti is a different actress then bernadette, therefore the character is portrayed differently, and everyone is entitled to there opnion.
@TheWeddingProducer really?!? she sounds horrendous and her acting isn't much better. Besides the fact that Patti's performance came after hers and it won Patti a Tony.
her interpretation of rose is more real and believable.
she puts every emotion into every word. i'm sorry, but bernadette is the real deal. she's brilliant and she's a great rose. and for those who say she can't handle this musical, is totally out of line. if she can handle annie get your gun, into the woods, and sunday in the park with george. she can definitely handle this. but i must say, her performance at the tony's for this song was much better.
What really drives me crazy are the people who claim Bernadette couldn't handle the role vocally...
Bernadette's been performing and singing professionally since she was 3...and she's headlined multiple Broadway shows..
She was able to handle "Sunday in the Park with George," and "Into the Woods" and "Annie Get Your Gun." Her not being able to handle the singing in "Gypsy" is ridiculous (especially when you consider that Rose doesn't even sing as often as some of her other characters have).
Bernadette Peters is probably the ONLY actress who has made her career from Broadway. How many true Broadway legends can you name that are still living? Movie stars and Singers try their hand at Broadway, but Bernadette has made her name on the stage. I dare you to do 8 shows a week in this show for over a year like Bernadette did. And as for Patti LuPone, nobody outside musical theater knows who she is. Bernadette is far more famous than Patti and always will be. Plus, Patti looks like shit!!!!
@KellyBevel I am a huge fan of Bernadette (I spent about $300 to travel to NYC just to see her in A Little Night Music), and I think she is a brilliant actress, singer, performer, and a true Broadway legend. However, I question your statement of how Bernadette made her name on the stage. She certainly has put in her dues on the stage, but she gained notoriety through her work in television and film. I agree that Patti is not as famous, but it's because she hasn't done much outside of theatre.
@shadowboxer524 While Bernadette did make films and appear on television, she ONLY got those roles because she did stage first. She would never have made the leap from stage to screen had she not made a name for herself on Broadway first. She has always been known as the "Queen of Broadway" and the reason her concert tour sells out across the country is because she is known for Broadway. Even her early appearances on Johnny Carson state this fact. He interviewed her for her stage work.
@KellyBevel True, but Peters has received far more acclaim for her roles in Film and TV than many other stage actresses. She's got a Golden Globe, Grammy's, plus 3 Emmy nominations.
@KellyBevel Julie Andrews sing could act and sing. Made two amazing musicals and still did broadway until the horrible day when she lost her voice because of surgery. Liza minelli beyond belief. Chita Rivera, She's good and she was the orginal velma. I mean there are a few people but you have a valid point
@KellyBevel Patti and Bernadette have enough grace and dignity not to insult each other's talent or appearance. It's a shame you can't learn from their example.
And to answer your question: Chita Rivera, Elaine Stritch, Marin Mazzie, Marc Kudisch, George Hearn, Brian Stokes Mitchell, are all people, off the top of my head, who have made the majority of their income from Broadway theater.
Unless you have seen Bernadette's work, you cannot say anyone can make it to Broadway. I dare you to perform 8 shows a week for over a year in this show like Bernadette did. Bernadette Peters is probably the ONLY actress who has made her name on Broadway and stayed there for over 40 years! How many truly famous Broadway performers can you name that are still living? And as for Patti LuPone, she is not as famous as Bernadette is. Bernadette has surpassed Patti in both fame and talent. Sorry!!
@KellyBevel Not to mention, she has remained down to earth and kind. Where as Patti is just full out Diva (And sometimes Bitch). Not to say Patti is always like that of course, but I have yet to see a recent video or read an interview where she doesn't come across as one.

Okay Im sorry but if she can make it to broadway anyone can. I really dont like her voice at all its barely a voice. I dont see why shes so highly praised, shes nothing too special, shes not Patti.
Because Bernadette can act. She is absolutely wonderful. She had a respiratory infection when this was filmed and yet she still did a wonderful job. Not the best, but it is wonderful.
Watch her in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE or INTO THE WOODS. She's a profoundly truthful actress.

@DivaBehavior Right Patti can't act? You don't get accepted into the Julliard drama division without intense ability, shes far superior to this woman so don't even try to argue.
I don't mean to say she can act. I don't like her acting technique, though. I don't even think it's something she took from Juilliard, because Mandy Patinkin went to Juilliard and I think he's an extraordinary actor.
Patti is all motions and actions, but no inner reality. She has good size for the theater, but what often makes her seem wooden is that she does not bring truthful emotion to the stage.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@DivaBehavior You are so wrong its sad, how can you even suggest shes lacks emotion in her performances? You know what I'm not even gonna try and argue with you on this because anyone with half a brain can easily see just how talented Lupone really is so I'm truley sorry that this shit of a video is what you find to be "good acting". Truley sad.
I admire some of the work that Patti has done. I simply did not like her as Rose. I do know what I'm talking about ... and it's a pretty fair guess that I have a stronger ethos in this discussion than you do.
@DivaBehavior I agree that patti acted this number out way better than bernadette and i love both of them. I personally think that bernadette looks to young and acts to subtle for this role. Mama Rose is a diva, so it is more than natural for her character to be a little over the top. Besides this is musical theater in which everything is in a heightened state of reality. Therefore, even though bernadette's voice is amazing, her acting simply doesn't make the cut for this role.
I agree with some that the 2003 revival of Gypsy was something of a letdown - but I saw it along with the Encores presentation of Gypsy where Lupone first took the role on as well as the official 2008 revival and I have to say I love both Peters and Lupone in the role, they each had a different interpretation of the character and they both worked very well for me.
The 2008 revival was much better overall, but Peters was absolutely fantastic in this show, so give her a break!
personally like both Bernadette AND bette's performances, but they are very different. You can't really say one is RIGHT as such, it's a matter of opinion. I like the inner tourment shown in Bernadette's performance and I like Bette's frustration when she starts to break down.
It's funny that so many people feel that Bernadette was miscast, since Arthur Laurents INSISTED she play Rose.
Early in the production of this revival, Sam Mendes was pursuing Patti LuPone to play Rose. But Laurents said he didn't want anyone besides Bernadette.
Laurents hated what Mendes did with the revival though, and claims any elements of Bernadette's performance people didn't like were Mendes' fault, and not hers.
I personally loved Mendes' take on "Gypsy" and everything he did.
However, Laurents hated it. In his newest book, he berates Mendes' choices and attempts to pass all of his opinions off as facts.
I do find it interesting though, that people complain most about Bernadette in the 2003 revival and praise Patti & Laurents for the 2008 revival, when Laurents thought Peters was the best part of the 2003 show.
Diva...thank you so much for posting! I never got to see any of the Gypsy BWay runs. Gypsy is in my top 3 fave musicals of all time! I totally agree with all your comments and see that you were just stating facts...you rock! I probably am not the best judge on perfomances, since I love everyone's version, LOL.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Diva. I dont appreciate you posting opinions as facts in the description of the video. Not just the critics, but many theatergoers found her to be very mis-cast. The other thing I find funny is that this song in particular was created to be over the top, which is how Ethel did it. To tone it down is an interesting take on it, but doesnt make it the "correct one". These are all matters of opinion. That being said, I didn't mind her. But she was not my favorite by a longshot.
What I said about the state of her health and her reviews were facts -- I mean, if you go to a preview and see a performance that is less than spectacular, it's natural that you'd write a less than flattering review. But she improved drastically as her health did.
OK, I LOVE BETTY BUCKLEY, but for this, I have to say Bernadette is the one that makes me tear up! I have a 17 year old daughter, who I do so much for, and does nothing for me in return... I will get that one glance as she goes out the door.... and she really emotes what I feel.
And that's why Bernadette's performance is so wonderful. The others just sound like they're shouting preconceived lines. Bernadette sounds like she's spontaneously reacting to what her daughter just told her.
At the end for a split second she had this expression that said, 'Oh God, I feel like crap. How did I just get through that?' and then she pulled it together and acknowledged the audience.
Bernadette shows all the sides of Rose in this perfomance. Sexy, emotional, determined. Btw I love the cast recording, her voice might sound a bit shot in Rose's turn but that's what makes the number better for me. It makes her sound like she is hurt but then as the song goes on her voice grows strong and she nails it :)
On the BCR, I love how she says "Mama's gonna show it to you." It sounds like her Rose is possessed with all these "demons" that she's had to hold in for so long because she never got to really perform.
I agree completely. None of this is over-done or theatrical, it honestly feels like the real Mama Rose was being secretly filmed when she broke down. Absolutely amazing.
How could you say Rosalind Russell and Bernadette Peters were horrible? Russell is one of the greater actors of our time, and Peter who was superb. Pity you think that way.

Oh my...how many excuses do people have to make? She was totally miscast and too small in every way for this huge role. Peters did not have the acting ability and that is no insult..few actresses can perform this role. I love her and in the right part, she has no peer but this was painful. I cringed at every second of her performance and she is the only Rose to not make me cry during You'll Never Get Away From Me.
pudgeuncle 1 year ago
@pudgeuncle Um...Arthur Laurents was the one who insisted on Bernadette playing Mamma Rose. Also, June Havoc went on record as saying Bernadette was the most like her Mother out of all the actresses to ever play Rose. I think they know what they are talking about more than you. And it is LAUGHABLE to say that Bernadette did not have the acting ability to play this role. She is so layered and deep. I guess to be taken seriously as an actress, you have to yell and scream and camp it up like Patti.

@Brathford
And remember that this was just a preview. She was still very sick. The run hadn't even begun yet.

@Brathford Wait. Where/When did this happen? "June Havoc went on record as saying....."
I mean. I love Bernadette in this role so I tried to google it, but nothing really came out.
ctranbaby 1 year ago
@ctranbaby I don't have a precise source to produce, but it was widely circulated at the time, because Bernadette was the first actress to portray Rose that June Havoc actually spoke to. She said it was because Peters' performance was closest to their actual mother.

@boynamedalexxx Thanks so much.

JudgeJulieLit 11 months ago 3
I'm going to have to agree. Like Roz, Angela and Tyne before her, she brings a sincere, realistic performance of Rose. Sure her voice is too soft and not as powerful as Ethel, Bette, Patti and Lisa Kirk (voice-dubbing actress for Roz in the 60's version of "Gypsy") but she does emotionally ground Rose in this performance.
chattymagpie1210 1 year ago
when u take acting classes and then u see bernadette peters on stage, u just understand how great it is to see someone who always acts in the moment and does everything u learn that makes acting what it truly is. she exemplifies technique and what its really all about, and because of that we get real humane character from her

Bernadette is shite in this role. There, I Said it!!! Patti is amazing in this role; Read ARTHUR LAURENTS' new book: Mainly on Directing - then you'll know all the shit that both Laurents and LuPone went through; and all the useless time and effort that didn't go into Sam Mendes' pathetic revival of Gypsy (2003) above with Ms Peters who was worse than Rosalind Russell in the 1962 film version of the show.
fountainchain126 1 year ago
@fountainchain126
DivaBehavior 1 year ago 19
@DivaBehavior can i just say that i adore the fact that you have not only used histrionic in a sentence, but you used decent unforced alliteration with it? the poet in me wants to kiss your feet
omnigeek13 10 months ago
@DivaBehavior Arthur Laurents said in an interview that he gave notes to Sam Mendes but Mendes decided to stay with his own "concept". Any faults of Mendes' Gypsy weren't Bernadette's fault, but Mendes'.
victoriaindigo 8 months ago
@victoriaindigo This is true...however, let's not forget, Laurents opted *not* to direct this "Gypsy", because he wanted to see what another Director would do with it. Then, he proceeded to try to tell Mendes what to do. Notes are one thing, but Laurents was trying to direct Mendes on directing. Contrary to what Laurents believed, Mendes does have the musical in his bones.
But yes, your main point is correct. Bernadette wasn't at fault for anything, and Laurents praised her work in the show.

In any case I was just happy that AL validated Bernadette!
victoriaindigo 8 months ago
@victoriaindigo Mendes has a different take on the musical material he directs. He most definitely has it in his bones. I saw Mendes' "Gypsy"...I was 13, and it was a totally mesmerizing experience.
Oh, and Laurents should validate Peters; it was his idea to cast her in the first place. Early on, LuPone expressed interest in playing Rose in this revival, and Sam Mendes was, apparently, somewhat interested in her, but Laurents forbid it.
I loved both revivals, though. 2003, and 2008.

boynamedalexxx 7 months ago 3
@DivaBehavior I'm just curious- did you actually see Merman as Rose? Unfortunately I didn't, but everyone I've spoken to who actually saw Ms. Merman live said that she was NOT the ham that revisionists have labeled her. There are a few audio clips of Merman live as Rose, and, from what I've heard, I think that her acting was the most real, and the least overacted. Maybe you should check them out.
SuperMonahan 7 months ago
@DivaBehavior Hey they were all good! THey all had a different version of Rose. BTW This is supposed to be Rose's psychotic break song. The point of the song is to show her slowly deteriorating character and not an elegant song by any means
SaxPlayers13 2 months ago
@fountainchain126 If you read Laurents' book, then you'd know he loved Bernadette in the role, and didn't think she was the problem.
Plus, don't just take Laurents's side because he wrote "GYPSY," he's very egotistical and immature. It's ALL about Arthur to him. He would still be talking shit on Patti if they hadn't patched things up.
boynamedalexxx 1 year ago 3
@fountainchain126 Um, f you actually read Arthur Laurents book, he also PRAISED Bernadette's performance as Rose and had nothing but admiration for her. It was Sam Mendes he had a problem with, not Bernadette. Also, it was Arthur who insisted Bernadette play Rose. LuPone was suggested at the time and he chose Bernadette. For his "revenge production" he cast Patti. Arthur just wanted to stick it to Mendes. Had Arthur directed Bernadette's Gyspy, Patti would never have played Rose. Period.
Brathford 1 year ago 4
@Brathford Plus, Laurents could have directed it in '03 if he wanted, he just chose not to since he said he wanted to see what another Director would do with the material. Then, he continually tried to tell Mendes what to do through the whole rehearsal process. So, when the final production still didn't meet his 'standards,' he blabbed to the world about how Mendes doesn't have the musical 'in his bones.' Laurents is extremely talented, but his personality has needed a makeover for a long time.

ChrisRandomSinger 1 year ago

Just my opinion, though.

her interpretation of rose is more real and believable.
she puts every emotion into every word. i'm sorry, but bernadette is the real deal. she's brilliant and she's a great rose. and for those who say she can't handle this musical, is totally out of line. if she can handle annie get your gun, into the woods, and sunday in the park with george. she can definitely handle this. but i must say, her performance at the tony's for this song was much better.
MzCharmedFan0214 1 year ago 2

I agree that Patti is not as famous, but it's because she hasn't done much outside of theatre.
shadowboxer524 1 year ago
@shadowboxer524 While Bernadette did make films and appear on television, she ONLY got those roles because she did stage first. She would never have made the leap from stage to screen had she not made a name for herself on Broadway first. She has always been known as the "Queen of Broadway" and the reason her concert tour sells out across the country is because she is known for Broadway. Even her early appearances on Johnny Carson state this fact. He interviewed her for her stage work.
KellyBevel 1 year ago
@KellyBevel True, but Peters has received far more acclaim for her roles in Film and TV than many other stage actresses. She's got a Golden Globe, Grammy's, plus 3 Emmy nominations.

@KellyBevel Julie Andrews sing could act and sing. Made two amazing musicals and still did broadway until the horrible day when she lost her voice because of surgery. Liza minelli beyond belief. Chita Rivera, She's good and she was the orginal velma. I mean there are a few people but you have a valid point
applelover09 10 months ago

It's funny that so many people feel that Bernadette was miscast, since Arthur Laurents INSISTED she play Rose.
Early in the production of this revival, Sam Mendes was pursuing Patti LuPone to play Rose. But Laurents said he didn't want anyone besides Bernadette.
Laurents hated what Mendes did with the revival though, and claims any elements of Bernadette's performance people didn't like were Mendes' fault, and not hers.
boynamedalexxx 2 years ago 2
What did Mendes supposedly do wrong with his directing?
DivaBehavior 2 years ago
Haha...Don't ask me, ask Laurents.

But she was not my favorite by a longshot.
mackie584 2 years ago
I don't think I stated any opinions as facts.
What I said about the state of her health and her reviews were facts -- I mean, if you go to a preview and see a performance that is less than spectacular, it's natural that you'd write a less than flattering review. But she improved drastically as her health did.
