actually cant believe this. At the start you can see that the horse already moves his head away when the guy puts his hand up, showing that he respects the handlers personal space, yet he still feels the need to hit him. Unbelievable
Wtf...he hit him, the horse pulled away, as forced, then the guy pulled him back in, and punished him by hitting him for something the horse didn't even do? wow, shame on him =\
If that were my horse up there I wouldve stopped him in the middle and slapped him cross the face in front of everybody. Thats not how to teach a horse to be respectful, thats how you train it to be scared, and more likely to kick or bite you.
Horses should be in the wild, ware they were before humanity screwed them up. Smacking any animal is wrong ever hear of POSITIVE TRAINING?! its 100x more effective this this.

What. A fucking. Moron. Any GOOD trainer would NOT make any flashy movements towards a horse's head. You kinda need control of the head to bridle it. I've ridden, competed with, and trained horses for years, and this guy is STUPID. Please, never let anyone take their horse to this guy.
To me he sounds like a total fucking idiot. I'm 19 and have more goddamn sense than that. I'll only ever trust my horse to people I know and have worked with.

He seems to think that just because he wears a cowboy hat and jeans that he knows everything there is to know about horses... Truth is, he knows absolutely nothing.
what i dont understand is why he would use this method? what made him demonstrate this? im sorry but 'cheek bopping' is bullshit. you dont need to smack a horse around the face. if i were to tell a horse off i tap them on the shoulder and use my body language and voice. no one likes to be smacked in the face. i hope he gets caught off guard one day and gets seriously hurt. asshoooooooooole.
The idea of putting your hands close to the head is ok to "push" the shoulders, but to hit the face?! He is terrible and should not be allowed close to a horse.
sorry, but i see no abuse here. horses need to get 'headshy' so they wont try to headbut you, or bite you, or hamr you in any way. its just anther training technique, used for saying 'im in charge now, you listen to me' and getting bopped on the cheek or nose is the punisahment if they do not listen. sorry if you all dont agree, but a horse trainer i know does the same thing. it isnt abuse-its teaching.

But why hit him on his cheek bone? Would that not hurt him worse than bopping them on the nose and getting their attention?
@cowfarmer09 I believe he showed this method on every one of the horses out there after we got Chase back. Chase has the best temperament out of all of them so it did him the worst.
@alexisfowler93 Some people are just idiots and cant help it. I cant beleive that he tried to fix a horse that didnt need fixing. i mean pulling him to you and saying he is in your space after he was the one that invited him in? Thats just cold! Poor horse. Hope he is doing well and being treated better.
I can completely understand the use of popping your horse in the cheek like that if its gonna bite you or is truly invading your space, but while he's just standing there like that its ridiculous.
WHAT THE FRACK!!!!?????? Why on EARTH would you EVER hit ANY kind of animal in the HEAD!!!!!? I understand that the guy is trying to teach the audience to respect your but, that doesn't mean that you can pull the horse toward you and THWACK him in the cheek!!!!!
HOLY CRAP! What the hell kind of trainer is this?! You NEVER hit a horse in the head, the chest, the shoulder, maybe, but NEVER their head. What rock did this rope yanking ass come out from under..he yanked him and punished him for standing quietly. People should be warned about trainers like this, they not only ruin good horses they teach other people how to as well.
i would've jumped right up and said "thanks for teaching my horse to hate hands around his face and teaching me that you're a dumbass. great job." and taken my horse into trustworthy hands (my own!) freaking wanna-be trainers bug me so badly. -.-
I totally disagree with what this guy is doing! It really irks me that he is doing something is so unnecessary! You NEVER hit a horse in the face, even if they do bite you! There are products out there that help with that. Also, the horse wasn't doing anything, and I mean ANYTHING wrong! This guy is wacko! Please tell me you didn't pay him. Your horse seems well behaved and I hope you don't listen to people like him. He has no right training horses!
NEWSFLASH to people that think this horse was head shy prior. His owner repeatedly says he's not...and come on any horse will jerk their head away from a hand coming straight at their face just like any normal human being would.
My baby is named Chase too... and he is sweet and a good boy like yours. I would have "cheek bopped" that asshole in the face with my fist. I mean yea i have popped horses in the face but only when they do something that they arnt supposed to like bite, not repeatively when they are standing being good, and minding their own damn business. This trainer is a quack. Poor chase!! Im sorry he did that to your sweet boy!!
@TheGreatGumsy They were short on horses for a demo clinic and needed some volunteers from the stable. I didn't know the guy and they talked like he had more sense than to do something like this.
Well, this guy is real dumb... I would understand you doing that if 1. the horse was being extremely dangerous and you needed them out of your space right then, you know? or 2. if you have worked up to that point starting with more subtle and kind cues. You don't start with a tap and then whack them on the side of the head. Start by directing and then move up with your movements. This guy is real dumb...
I'm sure your horse was like WTF are you doing! Demonstrating WITHOUT hitting the horse is one thing but actually doing it to a horse like yours is just down right wrong.
watching this makes me mad the horse wasnt doing anything wrong and then the guy hits him for doing nothing!! if that was my horse i would have gotten up and went over to him and and took the rope out of his hand and said a few choice words and walked off. the horse could get trust problems with new people.

YOU NEVER EVER HIT A HORSE ON ITS FACE .....EVER stupid people should learn horsemanship, because they really don't know what they are doing, horses are very loving animals, i have two and i would never hit them and they respect me and i respect them its a balance, that takes patients

This is the most stupid thing I've ever seen anybody do to a horse. It's obvious that Chase is lovely and wouldn't hurt anybody, but this guy is trying to make it seem like he's a horrible horse who needs to be trained this.
I wish he had of done this with my horse because he would have easily been hospitalized by Hydro and/or me for doing something like this.
WHAT. How does hitting a horse in the face help anything?? Augh what a dick! I mean, I don't think a light smack on the neck to correct bad behavior is a bad thing, but you NEVER hit a horse in the face! And the horse isn't doing anything wrong, he's just wailing on it for no reason! That's only going to teach the horse to be freaked out. D8 And he just pops his lead line for no reason auuuughhhhh.
if this horse doesn't have a problem with keeping space why would he do that? Not only is he jerking his halter for no reason he's hitting him in the face causing him to become head shy. Jerking on the lead rope is a sense of correction for a horse if they do something wrong while leading him. Why would he mess with a respectful horse and screw him up? For a young horse Chase was standing there nicely. If I saw someone doing that to my horse I'd walk right up to them and take my horse back.
Wow! This guy really knows how to train a horse to be head shy. Someone posted saying that " He was trying to show the audience how to train a horse to respect your space. Since Chase has never really had an issue with that the guy decides to yank him towards him then hit him for following the lead".... what idiot would think it is okay to train a horse to do something it already doesn't do! why does he yank it into his space just so he can smack it? bc he is sick..... idiots >:(
Sorry your horse had to go through that. I know a horse that bites and kicks viciously in her stall, so cheek bopping calms her down. But a sensitive, respectful horse like Chase, it far from helps. For his clinic he should have brought a real example, a problem horse, instead of an already well mannered one. I see the logic in the method, but the temperament of the horse he is using it on is much like abuse.
even watching this pisses me off. i understand boping them if they try to bite you. i believe in that but not to do it over and over again.i want to find this guy and watch him just to see if he does it again and when he does it to another horse go up to him and punch him in the face to see how he likes it. if this ever happened to my horse chico the best gelding i have ever owned a little 22 year old i would be hopping mad.. your horse is so cute. im so sorry that this happened to chase.
@89packwood I agree. I dont know if i'd be able to sit still watchin this, without gettin up, smackin this guy in his cheek & leadin the horse away from him!!!
"Cheeck bopping" sounds like it may work once in a while for some issues but just to demonstrate on a nice , standing horse is stupid! No reason for this.
I would've been MAD I don't care if he's demonstrating reaction vs. response, your horse did not deserve to be hit on the head and yanked on the lead. Your horse seems like such a good boy, esp. for standing still so quietly like that.
okay "cheekbooping" or whatever that guy called it, Can be useful if used in the appropriate way. It is NOT abuse, however this "trainer" is "cheekbopping" this horse and not allowing an adequate amount of rope for this horse to move away from the pressure he is putting on this little horse. Horses learn from the release not the pressure, so im not sure how this horse was suppose to learn to get away when he was pulled right back in.....everyone thinks theyre a trainer....
I tell you what any horse would go into its fight mood if some buy was yanking a rope and smacking his face, hell I bloody would. that man has no right to call him self a trainer unless he's training a horse to be head shy or fear full of people. Very nice looking horse though i'm glad he's better now though x
I tell you what any horse would go into its fight mood if some buy was yanking a rope and smacking his face, hell I bloody would. that man has no right to call him self a trainer unless he's training a horse to be head shy or fear full of people
how horrible. i don't disagree with disciplining your horse, but 'cheek-bopping' the poor guys when he hadn't done anything wrong? your horse is obviously a darling for putting up with him so politely ):
WTH...If hed smack my blonko like dat id do the same thing and say ooh ur in my space....Chase was just standing there..he had no reason to pull the horse towards him and then smack him in the head...Words of advise....if the horse isnt in ur space dont punish him. its like getting on ur dog for somethin he done yesturday..hes not gna have a clue what he did wrong...
I`m still confused. What was the point of him whacking him in the cheek like this? I understand if the horse is trying to bite or whatever but...he was just standing there and as you even said all it`s doing is making him headshy. What was this man trying to teach? :/
@inmypantsify He was trying to show the audience how to train a horse to respect your space. Since Chase has never really had an issue with that the guy decides to yank him towards him then hit him for following the lead.
A cheek bop? Never in my years of riding and training have I ever even heard of that let alone intentionally tried to hit a horse in the face for "practice"
wtf...this guy is an idiot...i hope he reads his because hes abusing this beautiful animal the horse is doing nothing wrong hes being anoying and is making th horse headshy..
@horselover446 Yep, that's my beautiful Chase. I trained him myself when I was 14 or so and now he's the trustiest horse I own. Wouldn't trade him for the world (:
What a moron, gawwwd I can't stand these "cowboys" and I use quotes to differentiate real cowboys from these denim wearing, ego tripping idiots who do this kind of crap.
I do believe that it is important to be able to stand your ground if a horse is reacting to something and could possibly harm you, but hitting a horse for no reason is unacceptable, this isn't training he is a joke. Your horse is gorgeous, and even while being smacked he remained respectful the entire time, what a gentlemen.
well, this kinda is natural horsemanship... but the horse isnt being aggressive, there was no reason for this idiot to just got bobbin him, he is now punishing him for being GOOD. wow.
poor baby :( if he smaked my horse like that,i would tell him that he could "shove it where the sun dont shine!" and then i would "cheekbop" him and see how he liked it. i dont know why people have to pick on animals, just because the animal cant say anything nack to the person. but anyways, why would anybody like this video. it is terrible that someone would hit a horse(that isnt even theirs) like that
The horse was already head shy but hitting him helped no one. It seemed like he was yanking him a bit too and kicking what? This guy sounds like he's paranoid and afraid of horses....... "Hold onto the rope" "Hold onto the rope" What a quack.
@howdymister95 Chase wasn't headshy prior, he was just simply used to his face being petted, bridled, etc. not a hand flying straight at his face to hit him.
i hate this! this man is demonstrationg a cheek bop. he should not have actually hit chase. im sry ur horse had to go thru this. this man is obviously and idiot
So that's what that is called... "cheek bop". Something that he even says might cause a horse to wheel and want to kick you. Hmmm. Seen other trainers do same thing with a stick that I call "whack". He's using this poor horse as a prop for his prattling demo. That's not very fair to this horse.
I think hitting a horse should be a last resort thing. Like only if he is really acting up. both of those methods work perfect for me. now if the horse tries biting you then a "cheek bop" can be appropriate, otherwise, no. and as for what this guy is doing, hell no. hes hitting the poor horse for no reason. he went out there yanking at the lead rope and bopping him in the face, what the hell? If hes a trainer then i can fly
It does make sense that someone who is such a dickhead would be worried about being kicked, i bet he gets kicked alot and is just to stupid to take it personally and thinks it happens to everyone.
OK EVERY1 calm down. For 1 this happened years ago so no point in gettin upset now. Now let put my point out there (One that comes from experience with horses and that isnt bias on "Ohhh, he touched that horse!" I canNOT stand people like that. It shows you know absolute shit on horses) I do believe that if a horses is invading space that a well timed bop is in order for your own safety reasons. I DO NOT agree with doing it for no reason as this man has. The horse is prob What did I do?
@Chaco10523 i still dont think its even ok to hit a horse if hes "invading your space". when my horse invades my space i push him away or i will flick him in the chest lightly with the end of the lead rope if he doesnt listen to me when i push him but i could never imagine hitting my horse in the face like this guy is. the ONLY time i could EVER think of when its justified to "cheek bop" a horse is if he tries biting or something way outta line like that
"But if my rope's like this it would be okay for me to assume that the horses has a right to wheel and kick me in the head" That's not the reason they have the right to kick you in the head -.- and you started right away just tugging and ranking on his lead rope then just smacking him for no reason, and he still is being respectful of you. What a sorry excuse for a trainer. But, your horse is absolutely gorgeous horse, thanks for sharing this video to warn others.
It seem s to me that people who act this way around horses are more afraid of them than confident, It is a type of false bravado, a macho thing, I have owned a stallion for 26 years, and I have witnessed this type of "handling many times, by farriers, vets, shippers, and other so-called horsemen. Treat your horse with respect and he will respond in kind-- consistency and patience are key!
if this was my horse i would of walked up to that scum and "cheek blocked" that guys face... god that horse looks like hes a sweety and he has good ground manners... this video maid me sick... that guy thinks hes so cool... yea lets hope he thinks that when i cheek block him
The guy is full of himself. I have been around horses my whole life and I have never once seen a good trainer do that to a horse. Now if the horse wheeled around to bite him I could understand, maybe a little. But thats just wrong. Your horse is going to get head shy and start biting because of what he is doing. Your horse is really pretty though.
yeah fantastic, train a horse using fear and trauma! thats how u end up with a horse that will kick u in the head! stupid prick! i feel so bad for your gorgeous horse, you should press charges
its usually the people who flaunt their 'talent' are the ones that causee the most problems. I've seen a show with a friend of mine and i was getting rather ticked he kept hitting the mare "lightly" on her side with the lead rein. she wasn't scared of the obstacle she was scared of the mishandling from both her owner and the guy
this guy doesn't know anything about horses and should have his trainers license revoked. people like him give real trainers a bad name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh my gosh. This is just sick and wrong. He has no idea what he's talking about! And to do that to a perfectly safe colt..just..ugh. Okay, yes, he may not be trained fully, but still, that horse did nothing to harm that trainer. On the other hand, what a gorgeous colt!
you just dont whack a horse in the face he should be fined for that my horse betty shes a bit funny when you put your hands up high near her face and i dont know why we think the farm we was last on they hit her shes fine now though on the new farm but she still jumpy. nice pinto colt
actually cant believe this. At the start you can see that the horse already moves his head away when the guy puts his hand up, showing that he respects the handlers personal space, yet he still feels the need to hit him. Unbelievable

crescent12341 2 months ago

There are products out there that help with that. Also, the horse wasn't doing anything, and I mean ANYTHING wrong! This guy is wacko! Please tell me you didn't pay him. Your horse seems well behaved and I hope you don't listen to people like him. He has no right training horses!

This is the most stupid thing I've ever seen anybody do to a horse. It's obvious that Chase is lovely and wouldn't hurt anybody, but this guy is trying to make it seem like he's a horrible horse who needs to be trained this.
I wish he had of done this with my horse because he would have easily been hospitalized by Hydro and/or me for doing something like this.
bethxquizzy 2 months ago
D8 And he just pops his lead line for no reason auuuughhhhh.
quezeh 2 months ago
Someone needs to put a halter on this guy and jerk him around for an hour or two, see how he freakin' likes it..
AirwaveXReverie 3 months ago
if this horse doesn't have a problem with keeping space why would he do that? Not only is he jerking his halter for no reason he's hitting him in the face causing him to become head shy. Jerking on the lead rope is a sense of correction for a horse if they do something wrong while leading him. Why would he mess with a respectful horse and screw him up? For a young horse Chase was standing there nicely. If I saw someone doing that to my horse I'd walk right up to them and take my horse back.
XxXxmusicnhorsesXxXx 3 months ago
Wow! This guy really knows how to train a horse to be head shy. Someone posted saying that " He was trying to show the audience how to train a horse to respect your space. Since Chase has never really had an issue with that the guy decides to yank him towards him then hit him for following the lead".... what idiot would think it is okay to train a horse to do something it already doesn't do! why does he yank it into his space just so he can smack it? bc he is sick..... idiots >:(
horsehuggerlaura 3 months ago
Who is this idiot?
imaxmanracer 3 months ago
Sorry your horse had to go through that. I know a horse that bites and kicks viciously in her stall, so cheek bopping calms her down. But a sensitive, respectful horse like Chase, it far from helps. For his clinic he should have brought a real example, a problem horse, instead of an already well mannered one. I see the logic in the method, but the temperament of the horse he is using it on is much like abuse.
AmaneeChaan 3 months ago
even watching this pisses me off. i understand boping them if they try to bite you. i believe in that but not to do it over and over again.i want to find this guy and watch him just to see if he does it again and when he does it to another horse go up to him and punch him in the face to see how he likes it. if this ever happened to my horse chico the best gelding i have ever owned a little 22 year old i would be hopping mad.. your horse is so cute. im so sorry that this happened to chase.

okay "cheekbooping" or whatever that guy called it, Can be useful if used in the appropriate way.

This guy has no clue about communicating with horses in a manner that indicates respect or compassion.
Horses know how to judge people, and respond with fear or aggression if someone is abusive .
Your instincts were correct to get Chase away from this clown as soon as possible.Good for you!
Just because someone says they are an expert doesn't mean the methods are right for your horse. (or in this guy's case...for anyone's horse.)

I do believe that it is important to be able to stand your ground if a horse is reacting to something and could possibly harm you, but hitting a horse for no reason is unacceptable, this isn't training he is a joke. poor baby :( if he smaked my horse like that,i would tell him that he could "shove it where the sun dont shine!" and then i would "cheekbop" him and see how he liked it. i dont know why people have to pick on animals, just because the animal cant say anything nack to the person. but anyways, why would anybody like this video. it is terrible that someone would hit a horse(that isnt even theirs) like that

Chaco10523 3 months ago
@Chaco10523 i still dont think its even ok to hit a horse if hes "invading your space". when my horse invades my space i push him away or i will flick him in the chest lightly with the end of the lead rope if he doesnt listen to me when i push him but i could never imagine hitting my horse in the face like this guy is. the ONLY time i could EVER think of when its justified to "cheek bop" a horse is if he tries biting or something way outta line like that
