He must be in a forward position to know the precise moment when to commit to an advance or his famous "spearhead" assaults, or restrain the assault and take a defensive posture. However he emphsized the point that a defensive posture was tantamount to failure.

My grandfather & grand-uncle served under Rommel. Both were Panzer commanders in the 7th Panzer Division after Rommel took command in France. Both were decorated by Rommel on May 28, 1940 for the encirclement of the French 1st Army, battle of Lille. They also commanded in Africa. After Africa they campaigned during the 6th Army's encirclement and counter-attack. Both said Rommel made a personal request no einsatzgruppen (death sqauds) operate behind his lines.
