Yes there were, But that problem was specific to the Pinto, the gas tank would get crushed and SPRAY a fine mist of fuel, often it would even enter the passenger cabin. There is a big difference between a fine mist of gasoline and puddles of it on the ground from a ruptured tank. You CAN put a lit match into a bucket of gasoline and it will not ignite. The spray will go up big time. Its all a bit random chance.
The fuel probably ignited when it hit the hot engine parts in the Impala or maybe the battery shorting in the impala set it off. As I said the test with the Jeep certainly is not a great one and displays a weakness in the design. Keep in mind that almost every car in the world was built this way until the 90's And how many exploding cars were there? Not many. Still not a good test, and the tank should have been better designed. But I would still drive one, the risk is very low.
I just saw the test of the WJ, and now this ZJ. The rear end seems to crumple more on the newer WJ. Regardless keep in mind you have a lower riding car hitting the higher Jeep. The Taurus went under the bumper on both Jeeps, hitting the axle. I am not making excuses for Jeep, but I think the odds of this happening are pretty low. And gasoline does not automatically explode when the tank ruptures. You can shoot rifle rounds at a gas tank and it does not go up. Still not a great result
I just saw two wrecks in a row today CarPro93. This white new Lincoln Navigator rear ended a silver BMW 5 series(the back was crushed in so much that you couldn't tell which model, but the back window wasn't blown out) at 55-60 mph. Yet the BMW driver walked away(he was in the Navy) but had his hand on neck as if it hurt. The other was this little white Mazda Protege wagon t-boning this new black Tahoe at 50 mph, the mazda was crushed in, the tahoe had a big dent on the driver's side. No 1 died.
@xFiveNineJeepx I second that it is a waste of a beautiful jeep
