I've seen Luciano sing this with other singers, but Leo Nucci is the best. He's a wonderful singer and actor.  If I'm not mistaken, Pavarotti never sang this role

on stage because he was very superstitious and thought it would bring him bad

Watch at about 8:00 and a little further--the energy between LN and LP is amazing, electricity crackling in the air. Look at LN's face, it can freeze your blood. And watch LP's reaction. Fantastic acting and marvellous singing!

Luciano cantó la misma aria 4 años antes y lo hizo sin leer y a mi parecer mucho mejor, lo hizo con Capuccilli y me gustó más, más rápido, más ágil y mejor interpretado con mucha mayor energía y con mayor seguridad.

Alvaro is one of the roles Pavarotti should have done on stage and recorded in the studio. His voice was perfectly suited to it. Just listening to this clip gives us a glimpse of how great his performance may have been. He nearly ended up playing the role in the MET but they had to cancel it. :(

Leo Nucci is amazing, just listen to the amplitude of his voice, wow!
