I love ricky gervais. He might not be technically the 'best' comedian (compared with stuart lee, chris morris etc.) but he is certainly the most important comedian to ever come out of Britain.
Having said that, if i was Robin i'd have killed the recording of this commentary and kicked Ricky's head in lol
The same planet as basically every comedy critic in the UK. Lee is the most respected stand up working in the English speaking world at present. Gervais is a very good sit-com writer, and a very functional stand up, really, has little art to his stuff. He's also overly dependent on collaberation, particularly with Stephen Merchant.
@craigpassmore1 Stewart lee is generally accepted as being the best stand up working in britain today. He is the comedians comedian. Ricky gervais is great. But his stand up is imature and simplistic. Lee is very high brow. I think ricky gervais is a funnier person than lee. He is a naturally funny guy gervais. But it doesnt translate to stand up. And lee is a naturally funny stand up.
@ThePsydome there is no general consensus mate, it's all opinion. While Stewart Lee is a great comedian, and my favourite working in Britain atm, Gervais is just a slightly more populist version of him. Read Lee's book and you'll see
@frusciante39 I do stand up every now and again for a laugh. If you ask any comedian on the circuit who their fav comedian is they will usually have someone that they model themselves on. But if you ask them who the best comedian is and who is doing the most cutting edge stuff atm. Its nearly always Stewart lee. Plus. i dare you to ask it on chortle forums.
@ThePsydome yeah agreed, he's just a genius. Watching him makes it hard for me to go back and watch other comedians cos i just go, 'what is the point of what you do anymore??'. Then you flick on the TV and see a bunch of grinning morons clapping along to michael mcintyre doing a funny walk and it makes you despair...
@frusciante39 Macyntre is ok. He just does observational comedy that has been done so many times before. But he has a good personality and it works for him. But good comedy should be good even if you deliver it dead pan. the comedy should leap out. Just look at steven wright as an example of top rung comedy. If steven wright delivered macyntre routines.... it would not get a laugh.
I'm a huge Gervais fan and I honestly think Robin's diary is the funniest thing he's ever done.

I recently saw Robin in Leeds, performing after Reg. D. Hunter. Both were great, but Robin was simply out-standing. His anger is a beautiful thing.

Gervais is so hilarious.
Man, Robin Ince is fucking funny when he's just being himself too.
He can't seem to nail a persona on stage yet IMO, if he was just himself though, he'd be great.
