thats weird if your the only one in the store...because they are only supposed to great each customer as they come in, and sometimes they say irasshaimase when you go to the register....but....i don't know what was up with her...crazy?
I'd rather have this very passive welcome than the kind of assault corporate retail attempts to force on its employees in the US. Trust me, I've worked a lot of retail, and they really want you to harass a customer with about 5 minutes of bullcrap and "conversation" which of course includes pointing out any and all sales, all the while making suggestions.. It doesn't end there, of course, if the customer actually comes to the counter, another 5 minutes of forceful suggestions are to commence.
the first time i've been in japan i always felt like a VIP costumer, but as i got used to buy in konbini shops i really got kind of pissed off, overwhelmed by so many irasshaimase and in some cases with massive bowings. It's not that i hate it, it's too overwhelming and in my country most of the shopkeepers remain unchanged reading a magazine or something when you enter the shop, like if they don't give a sh** about costumer service.

D'awwee. But you've got to admit -- it's kinda cute. But maybe as a Canadian, it's just a matter of culture shock for me.
