I agree with your description. I've found that the new "genres" of music causes people to label music based on the type of crowd it draws. I've reverted back to just distinguishing between rock, rap, R&B, reggae, country, pop, and classical. I feel that all this indie, scene, emo, screamo, hardcore, metal, progressive, alternative, ect. has just made it more difficult to discover new bands. If it sounds good. I like it. I wont shun a band based on what the masses have labeled them as.

yeah i think he started to play it on the e string which was probably knocked out of tune and after 40 seconds switched to the octave above on the d string lol. The octave up sounded fine so he's either a lazy tuner or just knocked it against something/someone.
