Thanks for posting this. Pitrelli is an amazing guitarist and the most innovative and resourceful. There's a reason why he's part of Trans-Siberian Orchestra. He's my favorite guitarist of all time
Al ISN'T the "best guitarist ever", but surely is really talented. I really expected more from him while playing in Megadeth, but his work was good. Maybe he needs to put more from him on-stage, but that's something he can improve.
By the moment, I don't think he's underrated. He has just got the rate he deserves.
Sometimes we only see the good in everyone, but unfortunately that's not enough for what they are doing.
I took some lessons from Al when he was teaching at FOCUS II Music in Bellmore NY 1987. He taught me Mr. Crowley/Crazy Train/Paranoid. Big Ozzy fan here.
ahaha he is so under rated..reason i say this is cause hes my friends dad...believe it or not ...but me n my boy watch him play everyday...hes doing such good work with transiberrian orchestra

@krelbar I just saw him last night with TSO, and saw him use this technique many times. Never noticed it before, but yes, it's flawless and every note sounded picked. Unreal!!!! Nice guy, too....talked to him for a few seconds in the autograph line. Awesome show!!!!
@krelbar You ever played guitar before through an amp? it does that...especially if the amp is turned up loud...the louder it is, the more your hammer-ons/offs will sound like picking...words from the wise
@NicholasDunlap Have I ever played guitar through an amp? Of course. This sounds like a direct recording here. My post was more in awe of the technique.
@krelbar Yea I know what you mean you were just amazed when you heard it. I was way amazed when I first saw this vid about 5 years when it was first added. I'm just saying the way he achieves that sound is you know a loud amp/effect like we discussed but they key is just slamming your fingers to the fretboard as fast and hard as you can. If you do that it sounds like you will be picking every note.
Yeah, and how fast he flicks his thumb and forefinger for alternate picking...very unorthodox...gets the job done for him, though, and that what counts!
9-26-2009. Happy Birthday, Al. Well, you caught up with me today (at 47). Hey, maybe you can come perform in Columbia, SC and/or Augusta, GA sometimes. Think about it.
when i hung out with al, he used the really small Gibson heavy/medium teardrop picks. He picked in a forefinger/thumb rotational method- twenty odd years ago.
MMMMM!!..... in a second thought, it was not that much that Pit didn´t do that great in Megadeth...... it´s just that TWNAH was a mediocre album, the worst Megadeth album, at lest for me!!
The problem with Al, in Dave words, was that Pitrelli was an alcoholic in the Megadeth days.. So he played bad in some shows... Recently Dave says that Al was great in Megadeth.
Savatage, Trans-siberian Orchestra, O'2L, Alice Cooper, Widowmaker, Asia, Randy Coven, TM Stevens, Joe Lynn Turner, Hotshot, Place Called Rage, Flesh And Blood, Morning Wood, Megadeth and many More....
I've heard lots of Eric johnson and trust me, I'm aware of how much he does that, as well. But Al does it sooo damn fast... faster than I've ever seen Eric Johnson do it... but don't get me wrong, Eric Johnson is veryy good, too.
lol? It's a lick of half a second, Ej can definitely play that fast.
/watch?v=2Sh1P0earDU
Check at 1:27, it's a tad slower ,but it's all picked and involves huge string skipping.
If r a guitarist, then you know that picking 2 nps at those speeds is insane, and with the string skips and big interval leaps in it makes it even harder.
Al plays legato here on a standard pentatonic lick without string skipping which doesn't require 2 hand coordination and is not all that hard to do.
Awesome! Is this the video where he talks about primaries? If so where can I get it? I lost it years ago and I never even watched the whole thing...sux! I really want to know what else is on it.
Nah, just kidding, they've been blessed with some fantastic players, suchas mr drover, al, marty friedman, chris poland, etc, all maiking them the badn we know today. Wow! This is the first time I've ever heard or seen this guy. He's got phenomenal picking technique!!! I was astonished during 1:28-1:32... The motion is completely in his fingers!
