thank you for all the information. great clip. i have just come back from a cycling tour around the salzkammergut and we saw all the lovely towns, churches, ... that are in the movie :-)
Just returned from Salzburg where we spent Christmas. We did the Sound of Music Tour and loved every moment of it. What an idyllic place and sooooooo beautiful in the winter.
another place i wish a was born in.... the language threre is german right- i suck at languages. hedi and trapp brought to you by nippon animation - its eirey how the shows background art reflects your photos.
Brett Interestingly narrated! :) You did a great research. Its a dream which i wish to happen soon to travel to Austria> and Salzburg. Such a picturesque> I LOVE TO COME TO AUSTRIA
My sister and I went to Austria back in the 80's and took the Sound of Music Tour. It was well worth it if you are a fan of the movie. They bring you to all the different sights and tell you alot of info that you didn't know about the filming of the movie. For example, the church they got married in looks like a large cathedral when she walks down the isle with her vail behind her, but really it's small inside. They filmed it at a certain angle and she walked slow to make you think that. :)
I have been to Salzburg, too, and I saw many of those same sights, although I was in Austria for an entirely different reason. It was quite a thrilling experience, seeing the fortress on the hill and realizing suddenly where I had seen that before! I saw a lot of the same sights that are shown in the movie, like the fountain that the kids all march by and pat when they are singing "Do Re Mi" and the theater where the family performed their last concert.
@rickyfan3956 They wouldn't let us go in, however, because they were busy setting up for their annual Mozart festival. I highly recommend that any serious Sound of Music fan go to Austria, especially Salzburg.
Just been there. Got back to the UK yesterday (went by coach). The place is fantastic.
Had a misunderstanding over the tour. We were meant to go on a "Sound of Music" tour but instead got a tour of Salzburg. Saw most of the settings you describe. So pleased with it we'll be going again.
A very nice presentation. I also want to visit Salzburg but not only for a van Trapp tour. But It's nice to know a little more about the history and the beautiful city, the landscape and some of the buildings.
It really is a stunning city. If you go take time out to take the lift up to the modern art museum where you get fabulous views and an amazing banana split! The SOM tour was great fun. I thought it might be a bit cheesy but it was hilarious. Took my mother for her 80th birthday.
I went to Salzburg in 2006, and took a tour on THE SOUND OF MUSIC, went through some of the move locations, i just love it.. each time i watched this movie, i get all teary..and touched by the whole move over and over again..
Sounds more like the narrator is picking the film apart for it's mistakes rather than discussing it. Maybe a bit bitter from his days of being a tour guide?
Brett, you're very handsome and have a nice voice. Wish I could travel with you. Thanks for the humorous but fact-filled travelogue about my favorite movie.
Yes, you heard correctly. Although it is not pedophilia because she was over the age of 16, some still may contest he was "robbing the cradle." To his defense, things were very different back then and this sort or marriage (well-to-do gentleman with young family minded woman) was not uncommon.
I'm going to Germany in November with my schools International Festival Choir. We are going to take the sound of music tour!!!! I cant wait to see all this!
that's a wrong comparison! the lady should had been shown in the picture in her late 20s as was Julie Andrews when she took the role in 1964 when she was 29.
I have been on the SOM tour twice; the first time with a tour guide who obviously didn't like the movie and discouraged people from singing along. The next time, the guide was much more enthusiastic, and obviously loved the movie and people.
THANK YOU for watching and commenting! I couldn't agree with you more: Salzburg is also my favorite city, and the attitude of a tour guide is reflective of the tour. Your first SOM guide sounds like he/she should be disbarred. Thankfully you had a second opportunity to experience what should be a very eventful, thus memorable, day singing and sightseeing in some of Europe's most spectacular landscape.
I know what you are saying. We had a bad guide on a bike tour in Munich, but then a great one for our Dachau tour to visit the concentration camps. A good guide makes the whole experience that much better.
It was 10 years ago that I took the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg and to this day I remember every detail foundly. It is truely a 'must do' for any Sound of Music fan. I'm the envy of all my friends. I highly recommend taking the tour, esp. the tour companies that play either the movie or sound track in the bus while you ride from local to local. Nothing like some 30 people singing along to the Sound of Music! What fun :)

In the evening in an open air theatre, listening to some pieces of Mozart in Saltzburg in June. Nice.
Have a nice week-end.
