There was also talk about Mark Lenard coming on board to play Spoke or another Vulcan bridge officer because there was half a chance Lenard Nimoy wouldn't return for a second season.
I just loved Mark Lenards's performance here, that scene at the end of Episode where he's talking to Kirk about how they might have been friends in a different future was so compelling and so well delivered. This was certainly on a par with the scene's and dialogue between Sarek and Capitan Picard.
Sarek's portrayal of a Romulan was perhaps the best I have seen, and his character is one of my favorite Romulans. Tomolak (sp?) does come close, but he can't match this commanders skill.
Questo episodio è ispirato al film "Duello nell'Atlantico" (Enemy Below) del 1957 con Robert Mitchum e Curt Jurgens, persino la rotta che tiene la navicella è uguale : Uno, Quattro, Zero
It would be interesting if Sarek had a twin brother who defected to the Romulans early in his adult life. Instead of pursuing peace, his twin brother became a soldier and a skilled commander who abilities match Capt. Kirk.
@Parsa9 Quite right! It's a capability of the phasers explicitly noted in the original "Star Trek Writer's Guide," and it is also exactly how it was referred to in the episode's dialog. I understand the remastered version has "fixed" this "error," which is just one more reason I still prefer the original un-remastered version.
Historically, many viewers enjoyed Mark Lenard's performance as a Romulan, and wrote in about it. Since that character was dead, they created the role of Spock's father for Mark Lenard, and grayed him up as he was only about 7 years or so older the Leonard Nimoy. Some ST-NOS trivia for you.
In one otherwise great novel, Spock commented to his father much later that he was "struck by how much the Romulan commander resembled him!" DUH! Just because they used the same actor doesn't mean he has to go lame.
dont you love when you watch a star trek clip you have people discussing it

Just thought about TRON: Legacy when watching this vid:
Spock: Father?
Romulan Cmdr: I'm not your father Spock, but I am very happy to see you.

I'm glad that this episode was revised to show phasers being fired. The original show had photon torpedoes used when Kirk ordered phasers.
Steve17010 3 years ago
They didn't have photon torpedoes yet in the series. This was a phaser set to "proximity blast."

This was my favorite episode. The drama was unmatched by other episodes.

I don't know, Doomsday Machine was pretty heavy drama on par.

There's at least 3 actors that get recycled in the newer Star treks. Tuvok being one of them!
