I played in the house band of a TV show on which Ms Staples was a guest. She was warm, gracious and so moving when she sang. We had a 9 piece band and a 40 voice choir, and she had all of us eating out of the palm of her hand. It was the musical highlight of my life.

@AlFrisby Really, you're saying Ry Cooder knows nothing about dynamics? He's done this song at least 3 different ways and this version was the most appropriate and closest to how the Staples singers did the song originally leaving it open for Mavis to shine. Granted live is doesn't translate as well as the albums version but to say they need to unlearn is ridiculous.
