What a horrible mistake. His intention was right, but his reaction was wrong. In that situation, the best thing to do is stand up and stand still, making yourself the most visible you can while occupying the least space. That makes it easiest for others to go around you.

If anything he should have run *toward* his bike, leaving only one obstacle on the track for others to avoid instead of two.
