This is the very reason why I want a ninja 250...So when I max out, it'll be at 90. I've been riding motocross at a competitive level for forever so its not so much me not being able to handle the bike, the question is weather I can handle myself while on it. I'm really leaning towards the 250. I just dont want to out grow it in a month and wish I had something with more performance. At the same time, I don't want to die and I want something a little less complicated for around town use.

Its perfectly possible to reach 165, i wouldn't doubt a second that with good circumstances you'd reach 170 mph, although you'd need to find a empty highway going straight enough, downhill and a good wind, sun in your back, homesickness and a dire need to take dump would also have to contribute i think

I did 166 on my 06 gsxr 600. That was before it got stolen, but i probably would be dead right now if it hadn't. Although I want my bike back, I feel like I have truly lived since most people never experience something like that in their lives, plus it feels good to be able to say I'm in the club lol

@Vince62965 I was on a 125 for a year. Was really expecting something a lot more uncontrollable, but I'm fine on it. It's fast, don't get me wrong but it's much easier to handle than I thought. Be sensible and controlled and you'll be fine as long as you know your limits.
You'll get to 100 MPH before you know it though, and idiots always want to race you.

Nice video, I actually liked the music (Motley Crue kicks ass). There is MANY factors which can explain top speed discrepancies. Among them is wind direction, slope grade, and speed inaccuracy. Without GPS verification you are just guessing, and EVEN with gps verification, you could have just been going downhill.
@sonicnofadz if you were reading 165 on gps and you were going downhill then you would actually be going considerably faster compared to the road cos gps records horizontal speed. Like if you were in free fall at 100+mph a gps speedo would read 0mph
r6 looks great! It's a good video, but it seems to be kph. At the end of the vid you'd be flyin past that car if you were going 100mph. Not just barely overtaking it. And the truck at 1:14, speedo indicates 150. The truck at max is doing 85, there is no way you are going at least 65mph faster. Although, I have no doubt the 6 is capable of 160+
no lets do some math. motorcycle speedos are off as much as 10% at high speeds. at 165 mph 10% is 16.5 mph. 165-16.5=148.5 mph. your 160 mph assumption is using logic that the speedo is off by a max of 3%. at that speed its higher than 3% error.
@Atheismrulez The error actually progresses with the speed. The higher the speed, the higher the error. It also depends on the make and model of the vehicle and it is not unusual for the error to climb up to 10%.
Of course it does. I'm just talking about the normal error rate, which is usually lower than 5%. At these speeds it should still be around that. It's when you get to insane speeds like 200+MPH that the error becomes a lot higher.
would this be an ok bike to start out on? ive raced motocross most of my life so im comfortable on bikes. Im also 17 and weigh only 120lbs but im not short. I was thinking this or a yamaha fz6r. i want no less than a 600cc cuz i dont want to outgrow my bike too fast
@Racerdog68 i started out on a ninja 250r and it was cool for about a month. i kept it for probably 2 months and sold it. now im 16 and have a r6, i wish i would have gotten the r6 first cause it was a pain havin to sell the ninja. just get whatever bike you like, and know your limits. dont just hop on it and start flyin through traffic and you should be fine. i love my r6 and its plenty fast enough to keep for a while.

@Racerdog68 i never took a safety coarse, i just went to the local dmv rode around the parking lot one time and they handed me a license . insurance for me is less then 100 a year through progressive which is pretty amazing :D

@rigoperez2 - I've seen guys on the track who turned better lap times than guys riding 1000cc superbikes. It's amazing how much you can learn and how good you can get riding a smaller, lower-powered bike. You'll be so much better when you go to a 600 or 1000. I struggle getting past 120mph. Once I reach that speed, my helmet gets scared and tries to fall off my head, or my visor starts to lift xD Time for a more expensive helmet me thinks.
@Gidien2000 - Doesn't need to be a super expensive helmet. As long as it's well made and fits well. Full-face is a must. And for any kind of high-speed run, you just need to tuck your chin down below the windscreen and the force of the air will actually push your head down as opposed to pulling up on it. It was tricky in this video because the camera and mount were so high, I wasn't able to tuck down out of the wind enough.

no lets do some math. motorcycle speedos are off as much as 10% at high speeds. at 165 mph 10% is 16.5 mph. 165-16.5=148.5 mph. your 160 mph assumption is using logic that the speedo is off by a max of 3%. at that speed its higher than 3% error.

@Atheismrulez The error actually progresses with the speed. The higher the speed, the higher the error. It also depends on the make and model of the vehicle and it is not unusual for the error to climb up to 10%.

Of course it does. I'm just talking about the normal error rate, which is usually lower than 5%. At these speeds it should still be around that. It's when you get to insane speeds like 200+MPH that the error becomes a lot higher.

would this be an ok bike to start out on? ive raced motocross most of my life so im comfortable on bikes. Im also 17 and weigh only 120lbs but im not short. I was thinking this or a yamaha fz6r. i want no less than a 600cc cuz i dont want to outgrow my bike too fast

@Racerdog68 i started out on a ninja 250r and it was cool for about a month. i kept it for probably 2 months and sold it. now im 16 and have a r6, i wish i would have gotten the r6 first cause it was a pain havin to sell the ninja. just get whatever bike you like, and know your limits. dont just hop on it and start flyin through traffic and you should be fine. i love my r6 and its plenty fast enough to keep for a while.

@Racerdog68 i never took a safety coarse, i just went to the local dmv rode around the parking lot one time and they handed me a license . insurance for me is less then 100 a year through progressive which is pretty amazing :D

Only thing is, parents wont help me pay at all for the bike and its not like i have a high paying job and i dont really feel like dropping all the money i earn on a motorcycle so i dont think i will be getting a bike anytime soon :( how do you afford yours?

@Racerdog68 nope, they dont have a learners permit for a motorcycle. its an actual license. i saved up, and worked for a few months then went and paid cash for it lol. it was completely worth the wait! owning a motorcycle has changed my life. its not just a way of transportation, its a lifestyle. people who own bikes are like one big family, if i pull into a parkin lot with other bikes in it we almost always have a 20 minute conversation about random shit like we know eachother lol. its great :b

@rigoperez2 - I've seen guys on the track who turned better lap times than guys riding 1000cc superbikes. It's amazing how much you can learn and how good you can get riding a smaller, lower-powered bike. You'll be so much better when you go to a 600 or 1000. Just use your head, stay safe and don't make a habit of doing dumb stuff like I did here! ;)

I struggle getting past 120mph. Once I reach that speed, my helmet gets scared and tries to fall off my head, or my visor starts to lift xD Time for a more expensive helmet me thinks.

@Gidien2000 - Doesn't need to be a super expensive helmet. As long as it's well made and fits well. Full-face is a must. And for any kind of high-speed run, you just need to tuck your chin down below the windscreen and the force of the air will actually push your head down as opposed to pulling up on it. It was tricky in this video because the camera and mount were so high, I wasn't able to tuck down out of the wind enough.
