This was originally written for Martha Graham and her dance company, I believe back in the 30s. When it first came out the critics trashed Barber's music and Graham's performance. At first it was just strings, then - over time - Barber added more instruments until it was full orchestra production. I still feel it is one of the greatest pieces of music ever composed and - sadly - not well known or appreciated.

The Adagio is great, but it's been so incredibly overdone, especially since its use in "Platoon." I like this composition better. It is an exhilerating roller-coaster ride of a piece, too rarely heard or programmed.

This piece is just the bomb. I wish more Mitropoulos recordings had better sound quality.. Performances like this are unparalleled.
