There's another easy way to get into DFU mode. Just hold down power/lock button and home button. It doesn't matter if it is on or off. If it is on, just wait till the screen goes blank. If the iPhone is off, just hold it for 15 seconds. Leter on, just let go of the power/lock button, but leave home button down. Then you hear your computer plug in something like you plugged in the iPhone into the computer. Then it's in DFU mode, and you don't see anything on the screen.
