Ron Bushy invented the time warp machine to bring heads back to '68 buyt the bassist, as usual, goyt full blame and he's the one they puyt the hiyt oyn.
Prolly had no clue at this time they were destined to define musical history with the later release of the first album to go PLATINUM ...and there was O so much more...HEAVY was just learning to crawl!
Did you know that the Iron Butterfly Theme came about when one of the band members spent the night in a creepy, abandoned theater and he wanted to show what the essence of the creepy building was. So he messed around with the theatre's organ....and the Theme resulted.
Did You Know... Here is the recorded version of the "Iron Butterfly Theme" song and at the very end, Doug Ingle, taps out a Morse Code message! Listen, using one high note on his key board, he says... .. ._.. _ _ _ ..._ . _._ _ _ _ _ .._ "I LOVE YOU"
I miss the heavy part. But, I could do less with the "metal" part. Gimme 69-71 Sabbath and Mountain and 68 Zep and UFO again. Queens of the Stone Age and Clutch might be the closest thing right now.
This, the first album by these guys, was truely a landmark in rock. I remember hearing this in Junior High and just had to go out and buy it. I still have the original and several more of their albums. truely a treasure!
I rember American Band Stand playing this and everbody trying to dance to it. They all were looking at each other , i was thinking hell ya now your playing real music. Sad but alot of those guys dancing were drafted and sent of to Nam i bet.
Before synthesizers... there was the Iron Butterfly; these guys were synthesizers. However there were no synthesizers on this album. They will live in my heart forever!
The organ player has a Ph.D. in physics, he was working on a govt project and pretty much dropped out of sight, this is from a "where are they now" show. I saw the cheesy biker film at the Tu-Vu (we called it the screw-view) drive in at Clairmont, San Diego Cal. The best part was a guy got a hatchet in the head while in a guard tower from about 100 feet away. We miss you, Timothy Leary!!!
@NaciAtYerGrave Agreed .even though this & the Airplane's "Cushingura" used to make the hair stand on the back of my neck. at "awkward" moments ;-) Also Check out "Joe Byrd & the Field Hippies "( album -"The American Metaphysical Circus" ) song "You can't ever come down ".
1/22/2011 ... Here's to my best bud Jimmy Grissom on his 58th birthday ... He died too young last summer .... we saw the iron Butterfly twice at a small LA area 'teen+ club" called the Blue Law ..... we both loved this the iron Butterfly and this song especially ..... I miss you bud ...
This song is the sound track for the flight of a huge, rather steampunk wrought-iron butterfly - you can hear its ponderous nocturnal flight and disastrous landing at the end, including the fading SOS in Morse code -
@SupernalOne The morse code at the end is "Love You" (there is one dit I hear before that but not sure if it might be an 'e' from we or the second dit from an 'I'
@brnleague99 Love all those bands. Finished high school in a funny period; the early 90's. You could get half the albums a band like Blue Cheer or Iron Butterfly made on CD, half on old scratchy vinyl LP. It was the amazing music that mattered; before everything could be digitally downloaded. Oh, and we still had cassettes. God bless the cassettes.
@brnleague99 There would be no such thing as "metal music". We would have shitty wannabes like miley cyrus or whatever, some shitty muse or simple plan
I still live this life. I burn my candles. I burn my incense. I meditate. I escape. I do not miss those days. I live them. They are still here. Many young listen to the lessons of this day. I've personally stopped 14 enlistments into the military, and have created 3 cells of resistance to this corrupt nightmare. It is a resistance of the soul and will not be controlled by anyone. We have no authority but the Love that kills fascists.
Psychedelic is right, I can smell the incense, see the Peter Max posters, and the smell of, well a time gone by. In loving memory of my brother Steven. Thanks for the post.
Haven't had this CD out in a while. Now, I'm going to pull it out and play it. My favorite ......the HEAVY album !!! Not to put down any of their music, just enjoyed almost every song on the HEAVY album. AND I don't know anyone who doesn't recognize this music !!! IRON BUTTERFLY THEME. IS THERE EVEN A GROUP IN PRESENT TIMES WHO IS KNOWN TO HAVE A THEME SONG?
@Tabstarbelle Most musicians have no idea of who they are in the scheme of things. Hendrix got the message but got terminated in the process. I think he had a yet in terms of a theme.
@distressed7 Well, I think we all know when we hear Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven....we think of Led Zep. When we hear Nights in White Satin...we think of The Moody Blues, but I don't think those were 'theme songs/music/' for either group. It's just that they have persevered for all these years and those were two songs which are CLASSICS and will still be here, being played...years and years from now. Most musicians/singers today....will not become 'CLASSIC Musicians'.
Ron Bushy invented the time warp machine to bring heads back to '68 buyt the bassist, as usual, goyt full blame and he's the one they puyt the hiyt oyn.

So much character. When musicians are free (of money considerations) to make music, magic can happen.

@brnleague99 If it was organ in the theater, that "one of the band members" must have been their leader Doug Ingle - vocals & organ :)
