beautiful. have loved their music for years. am an american, have the best of old europe in m veins, england, wales, ireland, normandy, sweden; i'm kin to all of ye!
Ireland, like England and Scotland are already gone, lament their passing, but do not hope for something so fleeting, long gone, we are just readers of Legends that are buried in time.
This language lives on in the hearts of all people with old bloodlines back to Ireland. I wish it were more common. Seems like it would be hard to learn. But a tingle of a beautiful melancholy and hopeful longing exists in this language, forever embedded in the heart. Celtic grace, soul and wit, may it exist forever.
Incidentally, Fantasy Mythology and Lord of The Rings lovers,
The ancient Picts were the real peoples behind the romanticised, exploited fairy myths. The fictional Fairy Languages sound like this not the other way 'round and yes, it's ancient, from before Ireland Scotland Germany or Egypt had their current names.

@InfantryChans91 Gaelic people came from Spain. so they most Irish who is full blooded or near full blooded Gaelic are a bit more Mediterranean looking.
@zlessly The gaelic people are celtic people. The history of the Invencible Armada is a leggend as the history of roman soldiers in Ireland. I'm Italian, I'm roman. Then, I know well these leggends: are only to make to appear great a nation.
@Richiepookinshoo well said :D its all in the past, some people need to move forward, the irish and the english are very alike i get on best with brits then anyother europeans mainly because we share a similar sense of humour and same social culture........oh btw im irish :D
@TheCervixpounder But, because of your blindness, you will not survive this century due to third world immigration, which is the most potentially damaging and dangerous threat to Ireland and its progeny. God bless Ireland, and I hope the Irish wake up.
@TheCervixpounder WTF are you talking about? "Scottish attempts to wipe it out?" Scotland never attempted to wipe Ireland out. The only time there was violence between Scotland and Ireland was during the War of The Three Kingdoms and that was due to to conflict between royalist elements in Ireland and Parliamentary forces from (mainly) England and Scotland.
@TheCervixpounder I have visited only in Dublin years ago. The museum prison Kilmainham Gaol pretty much drained me of emotions. Have to admit that I wasn't aware of how bitter the relations with Britain have been allthough I did know they have been difficult over the decades.
:P nice way to put it :P its probably because irish (gaeilge) is a very pronounced and tends to roll of the tongue as to say :P also irish singing is wery soft spoken mostly but can sometimes be very powerfull :P
This is because Tolkien based his Elvish language also on Celtic languages, as he based many of his fantasy peoples on real historical peoples, like he based the Rohirrim on the Franks mainly.
I know it, but I think he based more on Old-Nordic's languages and myths creating the Middle-Earth (but maybe I am wrong). I've read that the friendship between Sam and Frodo was based on Tolkien's memories from war. This plot is tribute to writer's friends who died at the front line. But on the other hand, in foreword he wrote that war hasn't influenced on story...
Anyway - the first time I heard gaelic I thought (sorry, Irishmen!) it could be 'ancestor' rather Hungarian than English ;)
Ah thats an interesting thing, the friendship between Frodo and Sam :)
And yes indeed, he used the old north-germanic stuff for many things in his stories. I only ment that some of the peoples of middle-earth are based on historical peoples, in style and language mainly :)
You're right, you're right...I didn't want to undermine your knowlegde :)
'Interesting thing' you wrote - oh, c'mon, Sam had a wife and children at the end and I don't think that he was so cowardly (he was Ring-Bearer, so he has to be brave ;)) to not make a coming-out (if he really was a gay) ;)
If there was a gay, it could be just the one person (in my opinion) - Legolas.
Nowadays, when two men are friends, people ALWAYS think that they're a couple. We live in crazy times ;)
@DaithiBOC I know that Hungarian is in Uralic language family. I thought about it how it sounds, but you''re right - I didn't mention it. Take care! :)
I didn't know this version existed! I also love Altan's take on this song. Is there an English translation? One of the verses mentions a "Banshee", and that is generally not a good omen!
The song indeed mentions ban sí. The term literally means "woman fairy" so it doesn't neccesarily mean the woman fairy who screams like a banshee when someone dies. In this case he goes to meet one at the ring of Beal an Atha to see if there is anything she can do about the sickness of love he's feeling. She replies, "An grá a théid fán chroí ní scaoiltear as é go bráth" That is, "when love enters the heart, it will never be driven away."
Bravo bravissimo.

Is dfhiafraigh mé díthe an scaoilfeadh glas ar bith grá
I asked her would any key unlock the love in my heart
Is é dúirt sí os íseal i mbriathra soineannta sáimh
And she said in soft, simple language
Nuair a théann sé fán chroí cha scaoiltear as é go bráth.
When love enters the heart it will never be driven from it.

Char admhaigh mé é no go raibh sé ndiaidh mo chroí istigh a chrá
I never admitted it until now that my heart is broken
Ó aicid ró-ghéar, faraor nár sheachain mé í
Its a very painful illness, alas, I have not avoided it
Chuir sí arraing is céad go géar trí cheart-lár mo chroí.
And it sends a hundred arrows through the core of my heart.

Tá mé mo shuí ó déirighn ghealach aréir
I am up since the moon arose last night
Ag cur teine síos gan scíth is á fadó go géar
Putting down a fire again and again and keeping it lit
Tá bunadh a tí na luí is tá mise liom féin
The family is in bed and here am I by myself
Tá na coiligh ag glaoch san saol na gcodladh ach mé.
The cocks are crowing and the country is asleep but me.
