Cosmic boy one of the founder of the legion of Super Heroes wore pink, and Cosmic King in the Legion of Super villians wore Purple so are either of them gay? Then again at the time I don't think they associated those colors with being gay. Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble spent most of there time hanging out together as did their wives and they had a gay old time, but since then I think they changed the meaning of the word.

With Batman it's more complicated. I is Batman only because the loss of his family makes him suffer, so he seeks relief from that suffering by protecting others from the same fate. If he had a wife and children, his suffering wouldn't be strong enough to make him fight anymore (like it happened on Earth 2 after marrying Catwoman).

Interestingly enough: In the late 50s Batman was often accused to being gay. To stop this, DC introduced Batwoman who regularely flirted with Batman.

Whe the character was reintroduced in 2006, she was now openly lesbian.

So it Was Batman that toned Robin down in the movies, Remember Robin was angry with just cause because twoface in the movie version killed his family and tried to kill a crowd of people, maybe Robin toned him down in the comics I'm not sure about that.

When first created in the 60s, they were representations of racial discrimination. Now, since the gay and lesbian community is the most publicly discriminated against in America, many see them as representing them.
