  • I have an e-cig now I need an e-bike and then an e-wife if it comes out in the near future.

  • Yea an e-wife would work for me too.

  • I bought a "Made In China" gasoline motor bicycle conversion kit on ebay. What a pain in the ass it was to install and it's very noisy and I have to mix oil with the gasoline and now the throttle is getting stuck inside the carburetor and cheap plastic gas line became brittle and came loose off the gastank and started leaking gasoline while I was riding it. Lucky that there was no fire. I should have gotten an electric conversion lit instead.

  • Everything made in China is generally garbage. I have replaced all the parts on my second ebike from China with made in Canada, US. France, Germany etc. (anywhere except China) parts excepting the motor, battery and controller. Now it is tough enough. Joe

  • nice, i live next to lochside in Saanich and have been thinking about getting an ebike.

  • You would be really close to the Lochside Trail and the Galloping Goose Trail as well, so you could scoot into Victoria, Sooke or Sydney for about 8 cents worth of electricity for about 40 km of travel! If you want to purchase one email me and I can arrange to get you one for about $1000 US. Have a look on ebay too. Cheers and here's to cycling re-cycled rail lines! :) Joe (:

  • Where in Canada is that?

  • Vancouver, B.C., we start off in downtown and head north across the Burrard Street bridge, then west through the parks along the ocean ... the second bridge is the Lion's gate into West Vancouver, B.C.

  • What, I didn't post that, someone must be using a youtube name spoofer

  • I took it down, keep smiling and have a great day!

  • thanks

  • the place u ride is really beautiful! lucky guy!

  • Thanks, it is beautiful. Have a great day!

  • You sure won't plug up roadways at our speeds! =) Best of all it is the cheapest kit vs performance. Some kits cost up to 1000$ more for its performance

  • cool e-bike.. Come check ours. We did 58.5km/h on 36v!

  • You set up is fast, I had a look Luc and that bike of yours goes seriously fast! this is good because this is one of the car / goverment's major complaint, we plug roadways!!

  • I just tried a electric bike, it is PowerSmart XEB0002. My car is sitting in the garage. It gets started once a month or so.

  • I can get better miles per dollar in an effecient car. If good LIPO batteries cost about $700 and will last for about 500 charges then I can get ten miles per dollar on an electric bike.

In a 30mpg gas car you will pay ~7.5 miles per dollar. So Is it worth giving up air-conditioning and a safety cage? The world needs some major improvements in battery technology before e-biking will be worth the risk of being run over by a motorist.

    Do the math.

  • I did - another battery source $350 not $700. It has given about 800 charges so far and is going strong. A charge costs about 20 cents according to the manufacturer, probably less with the cheap BC electricity. A charge costs about 30 cents for battery life (1000 charges for $350 battery) and 20 cents electricity.

Thus I pay 50 cents for 40 km, about 0.8 cents per km or about 1.3 cents per mile. A30 mpg car at $4 per gallon is 4$ for 30 miles about 13 cents per mile, I cost 1/10 this amount.

  • I would have to say tekintl that if gas cost what it should, about 30 cents a gallon, my bike and your car would cost the same in energy. Bush Jr. and Halliburton now run the US so gas cost $4.00. The U.S military burns a few million barrels a day - I now burn zero. This turns my crank - so does flying by gas stations that charge $1.49 per litre. But have a look at the other posts below, some view me as too lazy to pedal, a greenie or worse. If you see me fly by give chase if necessary ...

  • Dont blam Bush. He has nothing to do with the price of gas. Contrary to your thoughts, Bush doesnt get on the phone every morning with "big oil" and tell them to raise prices.

  • Bush junior's largest $ contributior during his first election was ENRON. The largest shareholder of Halliburtan is the vice president. You must be a Bush fan! Good luck and enjoy your gas / diesel prices! When the people elect Obama gas and diesel prices will fall because the wars will stop. The U.S. military is the largest user of oil in the world.

  • What is the aversion of american to actually use their muscles?

  • I am actually Canadian. I am a reformed fat *ucker who occasionally pedals - but only sometimes. Last night I went about 45 km from the ferry terminal home - with about 50 lbs of camping gear, and I even pedaled a few times! As my friend Bunky would say - go run a marathon washparkguy!

  • nice comment. E-bikes are excellent starting points for people who need to get back in shape and can save money and time and avoid traffic at same time. Travel to work etc you can intergrate exercise into your daily routine too.

  • What make/model is your eBike?

  • I just tried a electric bike, not even expecting to. I am sold. I'm selling my car.

I can't tell by your voice that you are from Canada. i really can't. ;o)

  • My friend has a 50 cc Honda scooter and he says the same thing. Costs about the same, he gets 100 mpg - about 50 cents to drive to work. He also pays for insurance and can't take it on Skytrain or the bus. He also can't go up steep hills. To each his own in life - I like the ride cause it it very quiet and does not stink like gas or oil / diesel.

  • Yes definately a Canadian accent. My car is sitting in the garage. It gets started once a month or so. Make sure you bike sellor offers service for the bike.

  • Unleaded regular this weekend was $1.48 per litre in Canadian Dollars.

  • In the info it says he'll save on gas. Sure, save on gas but didn't occur to anyone that electricity costs money? that is you know, to charge the battery?

  • The electricity for one charge costs about 20 cents in Canada. Yesterday I rode to the lab (6 miles / 9 km), picked up sampling equipment then rode to the Skytrain (2 miles / 3 km), took Skytrain, then biked to site in Port Moody through a series of parks and side streets(4 miles / 6 km). While taking some samples I recharged the battery. I e-biked then about 20 miles (30 km) home to Vancouver, I was enjoying the ride. Total cost = 40 cents of electricity.

  • I pretty much always charge it at home and average 1 to 2 charges per day. My power has gone up about 10$ per month, so maybe I pay about 34 cents a day on average. The major cost will be battery replacement, about $350 and I expect about 600 to 1000 charges per battery. I already bought another battery which is 15 amp hours instead of 12 amp hours, I would expect some increase in distance capacity. The secret is to always carry the charger. No one dies for my bike rides, chain oil only.

  • the world can't actually end you know? Life can get changed drastically and some of the major species can be killed off but the actual planet won't die neither will life. Life will go on well after we're gone

  • Petrol in Finland costs about 1.48-1.60 per litre.

In US Dollars it makes about... 2.5 Dollars per litre.

    But good video though!

  • I don't know the Finish currency. We are $1.37 per litre today in Vancouver Canada.

  • UK today £1.30 DIESEL £1.15 Petrol A lot more!!

  • Yep, that works out at about $2.60 a litre, or nearly $12 a gallon - wish I lived in the US. ;)

  • Thanks for the vid. I'm looking at one of these bikes at a local dealer in Campbell River and have a couple of questions for you if you don't mind. Really good technical info seems hard to come by! You already answered one question by telling us your weight! :) Any idea how many times that $900 battery can be recharged? How long to charge it from fully drained to fully charged? Is the battery able to be charged by pedaling or going downhill (I think this is called regenerative ability?) Thanks!

  • About 600 charges. I have found the $900 battery for $350 through a U.S. supplier. About 40 km, more if you pedal. There is no regenerative capacity.

  • nice vid. I am making an electric moto cross bike I am also adding pedals (at 22kg this bike is light). where did you get the battery from???..I am ordering a Kelly controller (has regen ability!). I used a brush motor...although not zero maintenance has much higher torque.

So far cost me 700USD will hopefully cost me under 1500USD when complete. sooo cheaper than a zero or any other moto-x!!

  • I love electric bicycle too, but I like to be able to keep my bicycle. I don't have video of my and my bicycle but I have a BionX so I put their video! ... in french! haaaaaaa

  • Thanks alcou77! You are my first video response ever.

  • It's my first time too :) just learn about it! Where is your video been taken?

  • It is taken in Vancouver, B.C. in Canada. We are about 3 hours drive north of Seattle Washington (state). I bought a camera a little over a year ago which also takes rudimentary movies.

  • I have one and it is the best investment i have made. I still pedal a lot just for the workout but now I ride all the time because when I get tired i can just ger assistance. Also, you can use it as a great workout and just not use the motor a lot then you are pulling more weight. I am a fitness professional so on the days I have already worked out a lot it comes in real handy and I have no excuse to not ride my bike at least to work. Ride to work to warm up then lounge a bit on the way home.

  • Anything that gets a car off the road is a good thing for both the rider and the other drivers. One less car 'eh, and even if you're not pedaling as much as me, you're out there having fun and not feeding the oil machine. It's a shame to see so many blowhards saying you should be pedaling 100%, they're just way too impressed with themselves. Remember guys, there's always someone who rides faster and harder than you.

  • This is for sure ClownFight. I get passed by "pro bikers" who pass me with pedal power alone and then slow down to chat about electric bikes. I a mere fat f*ck, at least no longer consumes gasoline,or not much anyway!

  • get a kelly controller!!!

  • What is a Kelly Controller?

  • Yahoo ->> kelly controller. Company makes these in china...available in US too. Used to power EVs such as cars, motorbikes and Buses. Put one of these babys in your Bike. ::))) Im ordering one. If you can afford to buy a lot of batteries and can handle that much power! I will post a video when I get this thing...there are other videos on you tube...with kelly controllers...do a search!

  • This is waaayyy different than a motorcycle. These things are for almost everyone. I have an e-cycle of my own. It's honestly one the best investments I've ever made. No license or anything required on these either. A motorcycle is nice but this has its place also. I'm considering photovoltiacs to charge her up. Hmmm.

  • Yes, mine is a great investment but alot of fun too. In BC under 350 or less watts is considered a bicycle, mine is 350 watts, 36 volts, so legally a bike. Wednesday I e-biked and used the Skytrain to get a groundwater sample in Port Moody, about 40 min drive or about an hour by Sky-train & e-bike.

  • Yes I'm lazy. A leading zoologist has determined that laziness leads to longevity. But at least the car only comes out twice a month or so. I used to drive 6 blocks to the bank! I even pedal sometimes!

    Joe

  • how abowt just pedaling down the road screw the the motor! Lazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzy

  • I just ride my motorcycle

  • Is that $1000 battery in Canadian dollars or USD? With the money you spent on that Ebike I bought a little 3 cylinder Geo Metro. It keeps me dry in the rain. As cars go its not a gas hog. But still I like the Ebike concept. Is there anybody making Ecars based on this rather than automotive technology which tends to be heavy. A sort of bike/car?

  • The lithium-ion battery is worth $900. My friend's co-worker bought a three wheeled electric bike that is fully enclosed and is great in rain. He uses it to commute. A very small car is a great move too. I only use my car about once a week now. Gas is now about $1.10 in Vancouver. A Geo must great about 40 miles per gallon or thereabouts. I heard that $100 per barrell oil will equal $1.50 gas by mid summer!

  • This $100 per barrell oil should get gas prices up to about $5.00 US per gallon with your lower stateside taxes. My e-bike costs about 20 cents per 40 km (about 25 miles) even cheaper than the bus!

  • I like how Canada, unlike America, is humane and installs places to walk across bridges and ride on roads.

  • They say everybody wants to live in "America". But one thing I notice is the absence of Canadians living in so called "America". Maybe Canada a better place to live than so called "America" that run by the Bushes/Clintons. At least Canada is more progressive. Another thing, the name is United States, not "America".

  • Sacramento,CA,USA must be more humane than the rest of the US as it has installed a place to walk and ride bicycles across the main bridge over the river. We have bike lanes on city roads and Davis,CA is the most bike friendly city in the US. I just wish the REST of the US were the same!

  • How fast is 25 KP/H?

  • About 15 mph.

  • Eh..just average for a cyclist.

  • Like nice bike ehh. Ya know what I mean ehh?

  • Cool E-bike! I ride mine all the time too. It's the first AC e-bike. Click my name to see.

  • wow that is a great view of that body of water good vid

  • Thanks GLOCKY! Vancouver spans a major river and two inlets with good harbours and a beautiful view! Come visit soon!!!

  • where you live

  • Vancouver, B.C. Canada, basically directly north of Seattle, Washington (state). We are only about 40 min drive south to the Canada - US border! You will likely hear more about Vancouver Canada in the future since we are having the 2010 Winter olympics! Have a good one Glocky!

  • really a 40 min drive from nevada

  • wont people starve if agriculture produces fuel instead of food?

    Go nuclear!

  • I don't think the world is ready for nuclear bicycles.

  • damn! another childhood dream blown away.

  • i would love to have one of these, it would help coz i take my bike alot of places when i dont have a ride and at the end of a long day, i dont have to pedal!!! and the gas price here isn't that ad now, it went down to about $2.80 per gallon instaed of the $3.50 over the summer, its a major drop.

  • Gas prices are lower now! But I don't care cause I've gone electric!

  • lol, what ever works for you. i believe that we need to go the way that brazil is going, sugar power, its the same as the corn thing now just that the sugar thing has taken hold.

  • I was thinking to just skip the burning of stuff. Pure electricity only. Sugar power, cane or other biomass for energy is a great idea too! For me 20 cents of electricity is good for about 1.5 days. I now do all my banking, visit friends, shop, go to some clients offices, ship small items... have a great halloween!

  • a day and a half? for 20 cents? i can get behind that.

  • I only use my automobile only for work. I take my electric bike everywhere else for shopping etc. It's pretty neat

  • I don't know the voltage of your battery, but it may be worth looking at the dewalt 36v batteries, they suppose to last over 2000x recharge cycles (using a123 cells).

  • yeah electric is great, i got one this year, i am putting about 400 km per month on it.

  • I am currently in the decision scooter vs electric bike and your entry interested me a lot. Thanks ! :)

  • Great video/info. Something to think about if considering "scooter" vs. bike. I got an electric scooter and loved it - except on the street, cars expect it's going to be faster than it is which makes for a bit of an unsafe situation. Also, a scooter looks (to police/people) like it should NOT be on any sidewalk so this limits flexibility. I ended up taking apart scooter - putting the motor/etc on a bike. Has better speed (lighter) but now I can ride along on curbs when needed and "blend in."

  • Yes, I totally agree. Cops have always viewed skateboarding as a crime. Cars really crowd bikes alot. I ride on the bike path (if available) or occasionally on the street. Also after riding a bike since March I am going to "graduate" to a real non-motorized bike. I have what I call "pro" bike riders pass me sometimes up hills, some even stop to chat about the bicycle. I wish I was in this great a shape! Take it easy out

  • Lovely invention...If you want to see another cool invention video, check out "Safetybike" on you tube. You'll confused at first and then amazed I promise!! Safetybike safetybike safetybike safetybike safetybike!!

  • I would have to agree eric - however I was only a fat car driver before, and now I can pedal or electric! I have replaced about $200 per month of gas with about 20 cents a day of electricity! I even do longish commutes with work tools etc. You are right eric, but it is a start for me!

  • Darn Right! I own a Condo that sits about 3/4 of the way up a truly horrific hill. It was so taxing that upon reaching the top I actually started worrying that I might die. There's a point where exercise can be harmful if it's too strenuous. My bike sat in the back room for 3 years after that. A few months ago I took a chance and bought a nice folding mountain bike and a Bionx electric assist kit for it. It's just awesome!

  • I can ride the 8 miles to work and come home without killing myself on that hill. Generally I ride the bike like a normal bike but when I want to scoot through an intersection quickly or tackle a big hill, I kick the motor in. I generally get home with half the battery life left. That should extend the lifespan of the battery a good deal. My fitness level is improving dramatically and I feel so much better, you have no idea!

  • Then I ride home and I can actually go to sleep fairly soon, without waiting for hours like I often have to. To those who say I'm cheating by using this motor system, all I can say is that I wouldn't ride at all without this assist kit, but with the kit I find that I'm riding 3 times a week which works out to about 50 miles or so. That can't be anything but good for me.

  • Just forget the electric motor and ride a conventional bicycle. I go all over my city by pedaling; great exercise and no expensive battery. I set my bicycle up with rear side baskets, a comfortable seat and high rise handlebars so it is VERY comfortable to ride. I use the bike for everything - the grocery store, to work and back, and socializing - I live alone and sold my car. Don't ruin the economy, exercise benefit and simplicity of the bicycle with a motor.

  • I purchased a bike and found I wouldn't use it at all because the hills were killing me. Now that I converted to an electric bike, I enjoy going out and exercising knowing that the motor will bring me home when I'm totally stuffed. Old aged people, people with asthma etc, can't always put in enough effort to cycle over hills etc, its better get some fitness than none at all.

  • Hey IQchallenged, I am 52 years old with bad knees, a bad back, AND asthma. I found that all of those things have improved by actually pedaling the bicycle. I live in a very hilly area too - my old mountain bike has gears low enough to take on ANY hill. I have also seen pictures of thousands of old people in China pedaling their bikes as their ONLY source of transportation. Tough it out long enough and the hills will get a lot easier as you get stronger.

  • ericsgym, I take my hat off to you for what you are doing, but most don't have the drive that you obviously have. My aim is to get fitter and possibly use the bike for groceries and the like (help reduce pollutants). I look at the electric motor as aiding my cause, not being detrimental to it. By the way the hill outside at the end of my driveway is 1500 feet high... I'm never going to get that fit.

  • IQchallenged thanks for the compliment but I don't think I have that much drive. I have simply realized that we only think that we need all these things as we have all been brainwashed since the day we were born. If a nuclear war hit and modern society and all of its technology suddenly disappeared, I'll just bet that all the survivors would suddenly find that they could even walk great distances everywhere because they wouldn't have any choice.

  • ericsgym, I'm sure your right about the nuke war, but on the other hand, if RockinJoeDavis didn't have a electric motor fitted to his bike, he probably would be traveling to work by car. I think his change is very positive and may even lead him to removing the electric motor when he is fitter. btw..I think you sell yourself short. Most in your position would not exercise and point to disabilities as the reason.

  • Thanks for the advice. The bike needs to be plugged in to charge, but there are some types that can be charged by coasting downhill or pedalling with the regeneration switch on.

  • I'd kill to have a bike like that. Do you listen to music while you ride?

  • Well just save a grand and go buy one. I mostly sing when I ride, but you're right I should get an ipod!

  • Pfff. Don't get an ipod, that's just a brand name dude, and they crap out on you at about 18 months. Does it recharge the battery when you ride without the motor?

  • the bike lanes there look terrible. shared space with pedestrians.. .. . bikes move to fast for that to be safe for either of them.

  • We in canada are not progressive, the very crowded bridge is for both cyclists and pedestrians. The city tried to change a lane on this bridge (Burrard St. bridge) to bikes only and there was an uproar by car drivers especially the wealthy west side folk, who also oppose dog beaches! I have only wiped out myself so far (watch for hidden potholes). But xcanidx it is very much fun to ride!

  • B/C sure has an impressive amount of renewable energy. Do you charge it during offpeak times to avoid using any of that 1/4 of fossil-fuel powerplants (they'd kick in at peak times)?

  • I usually just charge it whenever, but I should use off hour times. We do have alot of hydro power too you're right, but new demand will have to be non-renewable in BC, the rivers and good spots are mostly dammed!

  • Actually not really dreamcastll, I just went to the closest store and bought one: I was lucky I guess although I liked the looks and ride to it right away!

  • you have really thought about this and know your stuff Sir

  • have fun with that.

  • Its lots of fun! Last night I e-biked about 30 - 35 km (about 20 miles) up and down hills all the way across Vancouver on one charge and the battery still had life left in it when I got home. This would have been about $8 - 10$ of gas if I took my car, plus in rush it is not alot slower than a car with all the construction for Olympics venues! Thanks NUBCAKES509!

  • would be 41 cents with a 25cc engine, having a better top speed of 21mph

  • Yes, this is the legal speed for bicycles which still don't require insurance or a license in BC. There is a wire inside my bike that can be disconnected so there is no governor on board. It is about the speed slow to medium bicycles make.

  • Is the 15mph restricted? it seems really slow. I go faster uphill powered by my legs and I'm 275 pounds.

  • Yes only 15 mph or 25 km/hr is how fast it goes. There is a governor on board that prevents it from going faster. The top end would be higher if I took this governor out. My bike is great but the shop I bought it at also has some service difficulties. None the less my bike is very rideable and I get lots of use from it. Have a great summer!

  • 15 mph? is that the bike speed law in CA? Its only 18-20mph in the U.S. .Planning on getting the Bionx, was planning on getting the Izip enlightened street, but they have terrible customer service. Theres a hack to get the bionx to go 24-27 with assist.

  • This e-bike has a motor assist setting, when it gives some power but only when you pedal. The aerodydamics of this bike is poor, I ride kind of sitting straight up or slightly forward, there must be better bikes aerodynamic wise. I find it comfortable and useable, and it has replaced the car so much that I save huge $ on gas. Thanks for the comment too!

    Joe

  • I suppose a velomobile bicycle with electric motor assist will get even more miles per charge. There are some that have two wheels and provide more energy efficiency through aerodynamics.
