  • Hey John,

First off I want to say that I absolutely love your playing and believe it or not it has influenced me a great deal. One of my favourite professional drummers is Danny Carey of Tool and for the longest time I thought bigger kit = more freedom. But, as time's gone on, I've discovered that at the end of the day I'm "home" on a small kit with some nice grooves. Keep up the beats man, they're truly inspirational for some of us out there!

  • "I have no idea what I'm going to play". Best way to play! Just let it flow and watch those creative juices kick in. Great clip here man. Looks like your having a lot of fun with it. Way cool. I say five stars just for the coolness alone. :-)

  • you're using a remo powerstroke on the batter and a remo ambassador hazy on the resonant

    am i correct?

  • dayum

  • Also, I think I would compare you to Chris Pennie.

  • Mr. Butterfingers haha

  • 0:55 ^^

  • lol i love how you can drop your sticks and keep going..id be like o.o one minute... *picks up sticks and keeps going*

  • ganbarou

  • lol droped ur drum stick ...............damn nice friggin drumming damn

  • MORE VIDEOS!!!

  • you really make your kit sing.

what kinda grip do you use?...it's interesting.

  • Matched

  • how do you get your snare to have such a great flat, low pop? loose on the top and tight on the bottom? and you have to use an extra dry head to get that sound?

  • alot of the sound depends on the way you hit your snare. I used to wonder how to get that sound too, but if you hit the rim of your snare and the skin at the same time it gives that nice pop sound your looking for.

  • yeah, i know about rim shots. but i still cant tune my snare to sound like that.

  • well what works for me to get a nice fat punchy sound is to tune the top lug and the bottom lug the same and then the top right and left lugs the same but a bit llooser than the top and bottom ones and then the left and right ones looser still and the last ones even looser. Try it out, might like it.

  • He used a mixer.

  • my drum teacher has a snare that sounds like this. and i don't really care for it all that much. he uses a ec2 etched on it by the way i'm not sure what for bottom head. i have a gretsch club jazz and i just find that i can give it a nice punchy tone no matter what tuning it's at. lucky for me i don't get this. mine has more attack

  • i love u, u r so good

  • dude yourr dopeee

    modern slang for good ;)

hahah i cant wait to set my drums up..

    nice thoughh man, really good

  • your toms sound badass

  • Dropping sticks...drummers worst nightmare ;)

did it in a perofrmance. it went right around the Bass, and I was like bent over hitting the snare.

Great vids man, your very inspirational.

Now I want a Guitar SOLO vid.

  • FULL OF GOOD ENERGY

  • what made you wanna become a musician and learn to play the drums?

  • dad gave me a pair of sticks and some lessons for my 12th birthday. i loved it. haven't looked back since.

  • I remember I read somewhere you had used just one mic for recording your drums once.. Which mic was it? It sounded pretty good for just one mic too, and you said it was fairly cheap as well.

  • Excellent drumming, man... Reminds me to some extent of the great John McEntire.

  • i like this one best.

could you please tell me what snare are you using on this one? because it sounds awesome...

ps. cant wait to see "drumming in the Oh Nine" ;)

  • i love it - you'll have to play some keyboard for me too ;)

  • 5 stars and I haven't even waited long enough for you to start playing.

yes, your drumming videos are THAT good, and sorely missed.

  • loved those fills @ 3:30 'till 3:35

  • What mics are you using on the drums? They sound real isolated, I like that.

  • love the sound

  • Vary tasteful Improv J. If I were an agent - you'd be hired !

  • Vary tasteful Improv J. If I were an agent - you'd be hired !

  • that is some awesome shit, your hi hats sound swell. what kind do you use?

  • been watchign your vids. drums sound great. what about the cymbals ? im really liking your 2 crashes and that ride. what are they ? from one vid i saw sabian on the ride? but yeah not too sure.

though im happy with my 13" bosphorus hand hammered traditionals :)

  • haha love the neck scratch 1:07. hate it when you get itchy while your playing, its just a challenge to make the groove keep on groovin lol

  • nice save :p (0:56)

  • ... man I got such a long way to go on learning drums.

  • but it's worth it

  • Nice. Sounds almost a little David Jones-ish.

  • wow! massive compliment. not sure if i agree, but thank you just the same :)

david jones ran the 1st drum clinic i ever went to. epic!

  • yeah.

i won a coated emperor as a prize on a promotion, last year.

they really aren´t so good, because theyre 2ply.

  • oh, relly?

i was thinking that the 2nd most common snare head was the coated emperors!

    so, alright!

i always knew the powerstroke 3 as the best bass drum head..

  • emps on toms? for sure, similar to the G2's i'm using here. nice and warm. but not so much on snares. 2 ply heads are less common on snares because most want that sharp attack. an emp rounds the tone out too much for a lot of people. i use a few different snare heads, sometimes with a control ring, sometimes a center dot, but they're almost always single ply.

  • powerstrokes on snare?

    hm, thats a little bit...different.

  • hmmm... not really. that's the next most common snare head after an ambassador. remo actually package the powerstroke as the snare head in their pinstripe pack.

  • definitely a drummer at the end of the day.

  • what´s that snare?

    which heads youre using?

  • coated G2's on toms. coated powerstroke 3 on snare.

snare is a pearl sensitone classic brass shell. 5x14

  • Thought that snare looked familiar, isn't that just the most amazing snare drum ever? Loud and responsive and pretty as well.

  • so pretty!

  • Did you just switch to evans? are those EC2 coated? and are you still using your pearl? because your toms sound really good.

  • Atta boy, don't let lack of drum stick ruin your rhythm. Nicely done.

  • haha.. i've got a fairly relaxed (some might say "lazy") technique. it means i frequently drop a stick. but i've never let it stop the flow of what i was doing. when it's live at a gig, stopping the beat would mean certain death to the song!

  • nice save

  • pretty good for not knowing how to play the keys!!!!

but I love it in its entirety

  • thanks that was cool..very entertaining ..your

    drums sound great!

  • I saw that one too. That's what pure improv is eh?

  • did you drop that stick at :98 ?

  • i dropped a stick a few times actually

  • wow i knew you were good but not that good. phunk jazz rockin. mixer sounds good too

  • drums sound crazy good, the new mixer is great. love the clean sound. passive mixer? i'm using a powered mixer, so i'm not gettin as clean a sound.

  • move to texas and play drums in my ska band :x

btw, what snare/head are you using and how much did it cost?

  • I love the sound you are getting with that new mixer. Really sounds nicer than your previous videos.

  • nice come back w/ the stick drop. But its hot. I would love to have you teach me drums. Thats one instrument i just can't seem to wrap my head around

  • teeeeach meeeeeee. <33333

    i play piano. let's combine.

  • awesome. rock on man!

  • hhah i hate it i always drop my sticks... but you just have o keep playing with one hand like you did. Sick drumming, love the sound of the whole thing and the way you incorperate the roles.

  • you could try lypur's channel for free piano/keyboard video lessons

what's the brand of the keyboard?

  • it's a yamaha DX7.. vintage synth. scored it on ebay

  • did u speed up the video? its like watching neo from the matrix

  • nope.. just regular speed

  • I WANT YOUR TALENT!@@$%

  • if i ever get the chance to go to australia....we are gonna jam together. you have great talent.

  • You are Amazing

  • The Fills Are....Orgasmic

  • magnifique! Your feel for triplets is very impressive!

  • mixers and mics sound great.

    Nice improv.

  • sounds good. what mixer did u get?

  • it's a 20 channel ALTO. an L20. to be honest it's a piece of shit, but damn it was cheap for a mixer with that many channels.

  • nice work ^_^ i wish i knew how to do all this mixing malarky :[

  • i have that drum head on ma snare..its great...but only if u want a deep sound...soo...i plan on switching..anywho.....great stuff 5 stars

  • Incredible as always.

  • first comment first view?? nice
