@fatfacekid A true musician has an addition? BS. How about Stevie Wonder? Aretha Frankin? Nat King Cole? It does seem that way but lets just say that some musicians use drugs and some don't. PERIOD
@MrOnlyfacts If you read my comment you'll see I never said a true musician needs to be addicted to drugs. In fact my comment contradicts that point not supports it. I was dispelling the idea that artists get creativity from drugs while giving some rational as to why some turn to them.
Worth a look? My plans for a novel using aspects of Chet's life in the late 50s (his peak, imho): markingtime4now.wordpress-dot-c0m/2011/10/12/chet-baker-diane-diprima-getting-lost-in-the-late-fifties/
Heroin didnt make him better musician. He needed heroin cuz he was a sadman, and he also needed to play music and to love many women for the same reason. And finally he comited suicide. He was special cuz he was a sadman. Fuck all the happy jazz singer, I like the lonewolves that kills themselves, they have something in what they make that is not find in the goodies.
@40mbe Maybe it was the heroin that let him make music like this. I find most heroin inspired music is beautifully honest like this.
Heroin is only addictive because it's makes you feel better than society can make you feel. Lets make society better so heroin wont be as life crushing.
I must admit that I discovered Chet Baker on YouTube purely by serendipity. My question is " How the heck did I get along without this awesome music?" Abso freakin lutely brilliant.
i was on smack for a year. lol. no i was and i can see how he got the way he got. i so love chet. that bruce weber movie just takes me back to that year in a nice way. heroin is what it is. bless old chet tho. he is jazz to me.
They said that because he often overexposed initially rehearsed version of exactly the performance...live appearances started tottery...because of drug ...his problems with drugs were continuous... I do not know in detail his life, but I know what it is able to make the poison of an emotional one... and what is not able to make our full of grace socially-oriented society!!!
Thanks for the brilliant sound! I often chill with my fav blue~double CD album "My Funny Valentine" but, but... I've never heard this version of Chet... till now!!! Incredibly rich, emotional timbre with excellent low melancholic tones ...turning words into real things and actions in your awareness ...thought that having all of him in my jazzy-collection including life performances... ♥
Every time I hear Chet Baker's voice and his music, I am like most people I think very deeply touched by his great honesty and sincerety. Sad songs of love suit him well just like this one or I GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU VERY WELL....There are so many. Just close your eyes and listen. It's an overwhelming experience....Thanks a lot for posting this wonderful song.
When men have thrown off their ignorance, they are free from pride and delusion. They are no longer at the mercy of opposing sense-reactions. Thus they reach that state which is beyond all changes. This is Infinite Being.
Fuck me, it really breaks your heat, lets hope Chris Botti lives up to it....maybe not.!!!!! all the classic songs are gone and he's off in a different direction.
thank god anyone sayed: "1 person doesn`t fall in love easily (and then put a smily face)" i think we should respect more opinions and start being more original... Althought this song is wonderful and chet is just a genius!! (i`m glad only 1 person disliked it...)
Yeah, he died at like 57, his skin and body were more like a 77 yr old. Such a talent, but as is often the case with great artists, could not keep his personal life together at all.
Everyone has faults, some of God's most gifted people were placed on a pedistal by man and they fell under the pressure of the weight, because no one thought to pray for them. I'm sure God has mercy on Chet and all of us. The question isn't what could of been as if it was Chet's total fault. but what could have been if others had watched over him closer. God Bless Chet and the Beauty He is. I never heard of him hurting anyone.
I hate the notion that artists who were "junkies" got their inspiration from their drug of choice, it's completely backwards. They aren't geniuses because of their addiction, they have an addiction because they are geniuses. Look back at all the great poets and musicians, the true geniuses almost always seemed crazy. Being a genius means thinking outside of the cultural or societal box that most take as reality; a genius is profoundly innovative and thus a "normal life" is simply unacceptable.
@fatfacekid such grace in a comment, yet still have the account name fatfacekid. puzzles me. anyway your really right man, making insanely much sense to me.
@fatfacekid Who are you to judge? Dont judge people untill you walked into their shoes. I can't point out one big artist who didn't do drugs. It's still the person himself who writes/plays the music, not a demon within so !
@fatfacekid sounds like a shitty doggy excuse to me.
let me tell who the genius might be - the composer. performers like this guy
they just go on track. it is all there, already. one just needs to see (which they do) and yet they somewhat take over the fame of the real thing, the real author.
and when they've taken the fame there is a start for drugs and such. not becouse they are special in any way.
But you cant deny, that also the fact of being high could be an inspiration, too. You cann imagine and feel things you can't feel if you're clean. That's a fact.
all people that are ahead of their time become addicted to heroin, kurt cobain, miles davis and endless other jazz musicians. it's not coincidence, some people just can't handle their own genius.
@tokenfyp Well not all of them become addicts, some of them do but some don't. Take SUN RA for example he never was a heroin addict but he made some ground breaking music. Don't confuse addiction with brilliance, I know some Junkies, but they are all wasted stupid fucks. But I guess that that there are some visionaries out there that happen to be able to give us a different light on things because they have this unhealthy dependancy.
@40mbe Sorry but I don't agree. I love Chet but it is what it is. Drugs or no, beauty fades, people get old and die, end of story. We are here but for a fleeting moment and he will live forever in his music.
@666speedball well, if I may suggest, go listen to ''porto'' from Dori Caymmi and all his 80's albums are great and beggining 70's there is much more like Copacabana from Sarah Vaugh on you tube also or/and your smile from sarah too, music from Dori Caymmi....enjoy

even before he started that junkie crap he had something melancholy and pensive about him which is what seems to make his music so beautiful, calm and unrushed that you can even see in his earlier stuff. its like a gap there the whole of his life. people tend to write scripts for themselves.
@RichardMcSundy What is "New York" about Chet Baker? Was he every there? I doubt it, he played and traveled everywhere in and out of the U.S., but that filthy, overcrowded toilet, dubbed the "big apple", it's more like the big tumor! All your garbage mammals are leaving the "greatest" city in the world and festering and destroying the rest of America! Take your filthy, rotten new york scum back to live in their ghettos, we don't want them in the rest of the country!
