Gay people can be just as unfriendly as straight people. I know some gay people that are downright jerks.

I know some gay people that ARE quite friendly, though.

It's just one of those things that get me, you know? Probably because I hear 'Oh! You're Canadian! You know, Canadians are the nicest people in the world' ALL THE FREAKING TIME.

It may not sound so bad, having a positive stereotype associated with your culture, but it gets really old. People think we're all cheery and folksy, and welcoming, and if they go to a place like Toronto they'll have a bloody heart attack.

At least if it's a negative stereotype, you can prove people wrong by going against it. Only way to go against this is if I act like an asshole. Not fun.

well the fact that you were defending gays had nothing to do it. i was just arguing against your argument that people that dislike gays are homophobic, or afraid of gays. true, that some people really are homophobic and think that if by being nice to them they will somehow become gay or get hit on, but you can't lump everyone in.

Just bringing this back up again. When people use "wanker" as an insult, with negative connotations, is that not sending a message that masturbation is wrong? And yet people still use the word freely.

It's the same situation here, in my opinion: using "gay" as an insult is no more wrong than "wanker". Unfortunately, I can't really think of another example, but I'm sure you can gather my point.

Of course, this also begs the question as to where we draw the line. To that, I would say ...
