  • Anchorman brought me here, and I am damn pleased it did.

  • @RuudBerger LOL Ditto on that one. That's why I'm here.

  • Gene Chandler was having a Gay freak affair with Joe Tex back in 1970 when he wrote this song about their "Groovy Situation, and a splendid combination".

  • @WhydontyouLikMyAss Wow! the mental picture of Gene with old Joe is just too hilarious, I could hear Jpe yelling "I GOTCHA"!!!!

  • who's the bassist?? Jamerson?/

  • @TheClam88

    Bass player was Richard Evans.

  • @TheClam88 The bassist is Richard Evans.

  • came out in fall, 1970.

  • @calijv1 Good point. I was born in the 50s and always wished I was born earlier as to enjoy the music from the 50s and early sixties

  • Love this, brings back such good memories......used to play it on the old record player when times were fun and carefree! : )

  • i think the average age of the people that like this video is around 50.

  • they need to take todays crappy ass music off radio stations and put back on these soul classic jams. this is real music

  • The beginning sounds like a Quinn-Martin Production score from some 70s action/thriller/cop TV show. It's very haunting.

  • A vastly underrated, timeless classic. Will never go 'out of style'!

  • Anchorman!!!!

  • This tune has an intricate, well played bass line in the verse. I always liked the tune, but the bass makes it funky and cool. I agree with others here: There are many similarities to "Love Land" by Charles Wright and The Watts 103 Street Rhythm Band.

  • he just got better with time I LOVE ME SOME GENE CHANDLER!

  • 2 people can't dig it

  • The production in this song is great. It's over 40 years old and sounds tight and crisp.

  • This song, along with "Love Land" by the Charles Wright Band, is probably the catchiest uptempo soul song ever.

  • This song brings back a lot of happy memories! Thanks for posting! I prefer the oldies any day over the garbage that's out today.

  • Lovely song and video jolien.

  • These singers from the 50's, 60's and 70's actually had talent. That's why these songs are lasting and still sound great -- in fact, greater now today. It's because it's quality stuff, both with the singer and the music itself. They didn't have to rely on showing their T&A off like Lady Gaga and Britney and their BS to make up for the lack. They had the talent. Tell me who's going to be listening to Lady Gaga and Britney and all the rest of these clowns 40 years from now.

  • @coashddjj2 AMEN!

  • @coashddjj2 WISE WORDS

  • gene chandler was truly one of chi towns greatest...should've been much bigger than he was..what a talent..used to see him at the old regal on 47th street all the girls went wild eapecially me...

How else are going to reach first base. The silent rap won't win her love, so do it , do it now & tell her the love man made you do it with the help of Gene & manuelworker. Good luck & don't thank me yet. That's only first base, wait until I tell you how to hit that homerun, me and manuel will show you how, & thats the fact jack!!!

  • oldie but goodie, thanks 4/posting

  • great song

  • can ya dig it

  • "Duke Of Earl" may have been his first and a top-number one hit on the billboard charts in 1962 but it doesn't nearly compare to this beautiful ballad, a top 12, that should have climbed much higher. Its a tale about how he's met this girl and like him is lonely and unattached; and he's so determined to make her his soul mate by hook or crook and not gonna stop until he does. What a situation, no what a "Groovy Situtation." Ballads like this is what we need more of, to serenade our ladies with!!

  • This is from Ancorman!!! This song is great

  • I was in high school when this song came out. Still remember the lyrics. Thanks!

  • One of my favorites. Thanks manuelworker for posting it.

  • One of the best uses of the word 'Groovy' in a song. Doesn't sound dated at all here.

    Thanks for putting this up.

  • What a great song...

I remember listening to this on the radio...I must have been seven or eight at the time. What memories...

    thanks for posting it

  • good,good,good music can't be replace.

  • Next time I hear someone compare this great singer to someone the likes of R Kelly I will puke!

  • The duke of Earl is the man!

Thank you for posting that song!

  • His voice truly matured between the time he did "Duke Of Earl" in 1962, and this song 8 years later. I know he did plenty of other songs in the years between, but I can't name them at this point. Anyone know what they are?

  • cmulwee001, several Curtis Mayfield produced tracks, like "To Be a Lover", "What Now", "The Girl Don't Care", "Nothing Can Stop Me" "God Bless Our Love" and of course the classic live at the Regal "Rainbow 65", these classics and others.

  • Thank You, I would imagine that Curtis Mayfield was also the main writer of those songs as well. Also, who's rendition of "Groovy Situation" came first? Gene Chandler's or Mel And Tim's?

  • Forgot to mention the fact that he wrote them also! He also did some great stuff with Walter Jackson around that time. I believe Mel & Tim recorded it first on a label Chandler owned around 1969. "Backfield In Motion" was also released on Chandler's label.

  • first heard this song on anchorman soundtrack--luv this song

    thank you

  • Great tune, I first heard this song in the summer of 1970 while I was in Yosemite Park listening to my dad's radio that he had loaned me. Memories!

  • Ron Burgundy is alive...

  • Yes! reminds me of ANCHORMAN

  • hi love this song

  • manual dude great song, but lets have some volume.

  • Great song that most cover bands sing a bit faster than this. Shame you can't find the old "Now Explosion" clip of this I seem to remeber it was just a bunch of pretty girls dancing in the sand. Definitely g-rated but still fun and a turn on Thanks for posting

  • When he performs this song live it is a faster tempo but it still sounds wonderful. He is a great artist. who have made Chi-town pround. to me he was to Chicago in the 60's to what R. kelly is to Chicago today.

  • i grew up to this music, come on know!

  • This song was also done by Mel and Tim, but does anyone know which version of the two came

    first?

  • Great song, great bass playing!Anyone know who the bassist is?Sounds like James Jamerson, but he was with the Motown rhythm section, the Funk Bros., and this song was on Mercury Records. Thanks for the tune manuelworker.

  • lol - this just reminds me of anchorman, just before the fight!

  • Maxwell1901=I was at one of thosegames and Brooks Robinson,Boog,Frank,Davey J,Etchebarre,Buford, blair,Rettenmund,Elrod,Blade,Palmer,mcNally,Cuellarand Earl Weaver were my heroes..still are and they were a 25 man Groovy situar=tion ocytober of 1970!!!

  • Great bassline and vocals.Gene Chandler was so fluid and "Groovy" in his delivery,Can you all dig it???

  • great stuff :).. realy is a goldie

    thanks for sharing it ;)

  • can you dig it? 1970 was a great year. curly afros and hairy bushes
