@Fishywishy270 NOT JUST THE GOOD DAYS, BUT THE GOOD OLD DAYS WHEN WE ACTUALLY HAD A MUSIC INDUSTRY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA......WE ARE LOSING OUR NATION...
I was 14 years old, going to Summer school; We were dancing in the street in front of the school while the radio played this song while waiting for our ride to pick us up.
SPIKE PUNCH,BASEMENT PARTIES,BLUE LIGHTS,SUMMERTIME,GOOD TIMES...NO GANG STUFF,JUST HAVING FUN...MACKIN AND PLAY TO THE YOUNG GIRLS.......THOSE WERE SOME OF THE BEST SUMMERS IN BROOKLYN.....
Gene Chandler was having a Gay freak affair with Joe Tex back in 1970 when he wrote this song about their "Groovy Situation, and a splendid combination".
This tune has an intricate, well played bass line in the verse. I always liked the tune, but the bass makes it funky and cool. I agree with others here: There are many similarities to "Love Land" by Charles Wright and The Watts 103 Street Rhythm Band.
These singers from the 50's, 60's and 70's actually had talent. That's why these songs are lasting and still sound great -- in fact, greater now today. It's because it's quality stuff, both with the singer and the music itself. They didn't have to rely on showing their T&A off like Lady Gaga and Britney and their BS to make up for the lack. They had the talent. Tell me who's going to be listening to Lady Gaga and Britney and all the rest of these clowns 40 years from now.
gene chandler was truly one of chi towns greatest...should've been much bigger than he was..what a talent..used to see him at the old regal on 47th street all the girls went wild eapecially me...

wow they used to play this on WGRT up in ole chi-town as in chicago. 1970 and not a day later. i wuz a kid growin up and goin to school back then and my lil radio got me thru the day/
Hey folks, if you know the words then don't just stand there, sing-a-long, why because it's one groovy song & if you want that girl to take notice then let her know. How else are going to reach first base. The silent rap won't win her love, so do it , do it now & tell her the love man made you do it with the help of Gene & manuelworker. Good luck & don't thank me yet. That's only first base, wait until I tell you how to hit that homerun, me and manuel will show you how, & thats the fact jack!!!
Love this smoooooth soulful song.....and one of the strongest bass lines I've ever heard. Something likes James Jamerson would do. Ahhhh, the Duke of Earl has the touch in this one!
I was in the dentist's office and this came on and I couldn't think of the artist -when I got home it hit me Gene Chandler I remembered the name of the song and punched in Gene Chandler's name and VOILA!! this bring backs memories and a real laid back bass line with all of those slides Oh yeah I play bass and I always use slides hats off to the studio bass player on this record.
"Duke Of Earl" may have been his first and a top-number one hit on the billboard charts in 1962 but it doesn't nearly compare to this beautiful ballad, a top 12, that should have climbed much higher. Its a tale about how he's met this girl and like him is lonely and unattached; and he's so determined to make her his soul mate by hook or crook and not gonna stop until he does. What a situation, no what a "Groovy Situtation." Ballads like this is what we need more of, to serenade our ladies with!!
His voice truly matured between the time he did "Duke Of Earl" in 1962, and this song 8 years later. I know he did plenty of other songs in the years between, but I can't name them at this point. Anyone know what they are?
cmulwee001, several Curtis Mayfield produced tracks, like "To Be a Lover", "What Now", "The Girl Don't Care", "Nothing Can Stop Me" "God Bless Our Love" and of course the classic live at the Regal "Rainbow 65", these classics and others.
