Funny thing is I feel she has always liked to pathologize anything I did that was not "her way." (That can apply to anyone in my family really, but I've tried to stand up to her the most so I got the most of the backfiring effects :P)
When I was 8 years old I was Dx'd with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and put on Zoloft. Ever since I've pretty much been the "identified patient." :-/
Story of my life... James, what do you know about anxiety disorders as they relate to all this? I started going to therapy for panic disorder last spring, and for the past 6 or so months have ended up mainly focusing on my self-blame and defaulting to feeling like I'm "abnormal" or "defective" somehow in everything I do, and how most (if not all) my self-criticism is like an internal manifestation of my mom's criticisms of me throughout my childhood.
I agree. People try to steal your energy b/c they got none. You have to have an outlet to escape these influences, b/c you can't avoid them. They are on TV, radio, the net, at work. Intent will get you through it.
My older sister does this. Everybody always wonders why we never get along & assume it is because of me. She is a totally different person when she is around anybody else. Nobody ever sees her & how she reactions to my attempts to amicably resolve our differences. Around everybody else, she acts all coy & friendly. Like a helpless little girl trapped in a 27 year old's body. Everybody just eats it up. When its just her & me, she's EXTREMELY confrontational, & irrational.
@Razlo5000 yes, this is often the delima for the victim. As the abuser is usually smart enough to have a different more acceptable personality in public. Thus it's easy to get through having everyone else think the victim is really the abuser, and the abuser is the victim. They are masters at this.
@Razlo5000 I have the same problem in my family. The thing I found to do about is nothing. I'm very serious. It's like a grinder wheel. the more you try to proove yourself the more you look like the bad guy. However, you will be suprised if you do not play her game that years later others will start to see her for what she is and ask you about it, because behind closed does wiht others she might start to reveal herself. This happened to me with my mother.
