Once they know and ofcourse accidents happen, but a form of discipline has to be used to enforce the no accident clause. Cuz cleaning shit off the carpet and couch is sumthin I will not do, so to make sure of that, I use the I WILL SPANK THAT ASS METHOD. Works like a charm. Save money on diapers, save yourself embarrasment at the pool, time at the grocery store, etc.

Especially if u have only 1 child, u have the time to hold him up on the pot, the work u put in now will pay off at 1 yrs old. U have to stay consistent erry day. And I promise at 1 yrs old your child will know how to go, by schedule, or just letting u know. Give bubble baths as a reward, not food all the time. BIG BUBBLES, clean but, potty trained child. YOUNG AGE. Come up with a song, it WORKS.

The best way to potty train is to start the first week they come home. Once you get and idea of the poop schedule, put them on the pot and wait, and after a cple of weeks your child will go atleast 2 or 3 times. They get it, then u have to pay attention to your childs language, they will know the difference in feel of "nasty" and clean at that moment. If your child is ready to go, child will spuirm, scream, cry, or try to let u know, u just have to be attentive.

Sometimes, it's good to back off, let the issue go away, then return again in a few days or weeks. This issue will almost certainly resolve itself before he goes to school, so there shouldn't be a ton of time pressure. There have been some recent studies that show that you should expect a tussle if you don't start potty training until after 3 yrs.

my tip for cleaning up poop is. my little 2 year old accident maker Isabelle's favorite thing to help with. first pick it up as much as you can than rinse and scrub the carpet or floor off with a mixture of pine-sol and water

In Sweden we have wool covers that fasten with velcro to go over the cloth nappy - I know it sounds weird, but they are breathable and don't actually get wet unless you don't change the nappy for a long time. Wash them every month or so - no nappy rash

Mommybecky35, you've no doubt experienced how great cloth nappies are in terms of speeding up potty training - like you, we only used disposables as a last resort. As you say, saves a lot of money and it's more natural and healthy.

Our 7mth daughter had just learnt how to sit on things. Seeing 1 of those Baby Björn potties in a baby shop I sat her on it while I was browsing. Suddenly she's shrieking & laughing, thinking it's cool so I bought it.

We'd noticed a pattern to her wees and poos so we sat our baby on the potty at the obvious times with a few toys around her. She seemed to like the feeling & it basically went from there. No fuss - a gradual process. Took a year but saved a lot of washing/nappies (time & money)!

I think potties are usually the best option:

☺ They're safer than climbing up on the toilet

☺ They allow you & your child to share the bathroom

☺ The child can take all the time she needs

☺ More hygienic than a shared toilet

Those Baby Björn potties cost around £20 & are easy to empty/clean & they're also extremely stable & comfy. A big Swedish furniture chain do a potty for £2 & it's very well designed too.

Avoid cheap potties that are uncomfortable for your baby & unstable.

Sorry to go on & on but 1 last thought:

Forget about incentives. Take your baby to the loo with you from the word go - don't hide them from reality! Babies want to grow up - it's in their DNA - they need no incentives.

Showing that you are pleased OR disappointed about potty usage leaves you open to manipulation by your child. So, as with eating, be very matter-of-fact about potty usage with your baby. But show interest, let them see you empty it in the loo & let them them flush!☺

Don't force it.  My oldest son taught me that all pushing and forcing can do is make things go backwards.

I follow the kid... if they're interested, encourage and support... otherwise... wait.

And in the summer... when ready... just let them run around in a shirt or naked till they get the hang of it.

My kids, ended up not doing it for good until they were at the age where I could just put them in underwear and let them either do it or make mistakes... and then have few to no mistakes.
