I have dealt with a lot of them. I have only had one aggressive encounter. It was when I was fishing and I think I may have been close to a den hole. Once I backed up out of the water it went on its way. Muskrat on the other hand suring breading season can be quite aggresive.
@ErnieCosmo I'd say it's extremely unlikely that they would attack a human without any provocation. The beavers here know full well that I'm sitting near them, but just carry on with their "busy-ness". Maybe they'd attack if you deliberately tried to destroy their lodge, but otherwise I doubt it.
