Great interpretation, but I'm quite surprised by the numerous mixing mistakes, with such different background (ambiance) between whay seems to be the rehearsalsand the final. Listen to 0:44-0:47, 1:10-1:15, and 1:38-1:40 for example. Unless this is totally hazardous compression effects...
What a wonderfully descriptive adjective - brooding - you use to convey the mood of the first theme. I think this is one of the most beautiful themes ever written.
You know, it's kind of funny: there is an innate tendency to fall in love with the first performance one listens to; somehow it becomes the standard by which others are judged. Yet, there are surprising ways in which "first loves" can be surpassed. That's how I feel about the Gilels, as compared to Badura-Skoda and partner (the first duo I heard).
I agree. For example: by the time I was introduced to Lipatti, I had already collected quite the library of piano recordings and now they are mostly useless since Lipatti bests them all, by a long shot.
Perhaps young death has a way of immortalizing great artists; but there's no denying the sheer genius of Lipatti. I meant to qualify my original post: to tell you the truth, I didn't even care much for the piece (Schubert's Fantasia) at all, when first listening to a recording (Badura-Skoda). Then the Gilels' performance changed my sentiment: there's no question that the WAY something is performed makes all the difference in the world.
@JLFAN2009 You're so right! I find this with almost everything I listen to. I've been trying really hard, lately, to surpass it, as you say. However, especially with Schubert and Beethoven, only a couple of things remain my 'favourites' even if they were the first recording I heard; notably, the Cleveland Quartet with Yo-Yo Ma playing Schubert's string Quintet in C major is still my number one favourite.
This is fucking insane. Imagine Schubert lived till he was 58.
This fucking guy killed it.

i'm studying it with my friend, i'm a conductor, he is an organist, and i've decided to take the second part only to decide on the sustained pedal

Perahia and Lupu are great pianists for the Schubert repertoire but I still feel like the Gilels are a bit more balanced.

To continue with another example: I used to hate Chopin's Nocturne #17 (in g) -- until listening to a recording by Ivan Moravec.

@dirkjdejong Another good one I found on YouTube is a live concert performance of two pianists: Imogen Cooper and Paul Lewis.
