  • Your say weird i saw primus sound.

  • fastest tremolo ever!

  • That's tripass! LOL

  • Marvellous demo.

  • @GCiampolillo

Look up "Billy Corgan Stompland" on the PumpkinsMediaMilitia page, he shows off a ton of effects he uses, mostly from old records. Billy visited the Moog factory at some point (I'm assuming in 2007 when the Pumpkins did a residency in Ashville, NC--I'm doubly assuming it was to pick up a Minimoog for then-keyboardist Lisa Harriton) and has had a Moog sticker on one of his Strats.

  • @penguinrock I watched that vid a few weeks ago, pretty crazy stuff. I'm jealous of all those pedals...so shiny @_@

  • RAYGUNOMICS

  • @ggmoo

    "Anyone? Anyone? Something-G-U-N-nomics. RAYGUNomics."

  • @penguinrock LOL.

  • @yzracer273

Distortion before, delay after. (It's in the effects loop of my amp in this video.)

  • are you running distortion/delay into the moog or running it after?

  • @BansheebotDecoded

Um... yes and no. If the pedal is off, it is the dry signal going through, it's just that the Drive knob is constantly active and affecting your tone (in a good way). This setup is not the same for all Moogerfoogers, however.

  • So if the drive is all the way down its the dry signal going thru?

  • "I don't need that to sound like a ray gun"

Man... You're doing it all wrong! I really loved how you used the env out to make the trem slow down. Reminds me of a video of Bob Moog himself, describing the MiniMoogs attack/decay/sustain/release.

I hope you can do similar things using the Low Pass Filter instead of the Freq Box...

  • @TenebrousSounds

The "ray gun" quote ranks among some of the dumbest things I've ever said in my videos. I'm embarrassed to watch it now!

I'd love to get my hands on a Low Pass Filter, or BETTER YET, the brand new Cluster Flux chorus/flanger!

  • @penguinrock Ah the Cluster Flux looks amazing... But I seldom use Chorus/Flanger/Vibrato effects so atm I'm more than happy with the Ring Mod, Phaser & Delay. Out of work at the moment too, so with the cost of import and such, the Cluster Flux will just be a dream for the moment :] I won't miss out on it though... With the BBD stocks about to run out (Still...), I'll grab one before the end!

  • Wow... This is intense.

  • Just a short thanks for a great and really informative video. I would love to get one of those someday soon! It looks like something that would completely change how I play, and that's exactly what I'm looking for.

  • 2:50 : you can really get some cool sounds with the ring modulators.

  • @mathewrileymusic

Yes, it is "Shame" by the Smashing Pumpkins. I'm a huge fan. You're the first person to guess!

  • @penguinrock they were my fav band in the 90s bro

  • Comment removed

  • Good video man, like ur comparison video about Boss DD20 and Re20

  • Easily the best Moog Ring Mod demo on YouTube.

  • i think jeff beck uses this shit

  • pretty trippy

  • Great fun, but I'd struggle to make any real music with one of these. That said, I've heard Guthrie Govan do some great stuff with one ;-)

  • Thx for the demo.

  • thanks so much for this vid, now i will definitely not be wasting my money on these things.

and i thought the EHX flanger hoax and the tube zipper were rip-offs.

  • very good review! I want one! time to cash in my piggy bank....

  • ..just sharing but john frusciante uses this THE BEST in ummm.. look up red hot chili peppers jam chorzow part 2. watch the whole thing. its beautiful. got some great sounds from this pedal.

  • these things are cool... but what the hell is it for? it kinda sounds like it was just made to mess with your sound guy :/

  • @mk1013106

Haha... I've used this in church worship band settings and have had wildly mixed responses. "What was that sound you were making? That was cool!" ...and, "Someone asked me to tell you tone it down some. It was distracting."

I'll never get rid of mine.

  • @penguinrock Dude. As a lead guitarist in a worship band that's always trying to push limits, I salute you.

  • @penguinrock So the settings at 6:19 could be substituded for dive bombs like if you dont have a whammy

  • @mk1013106 Its very cool. Canadian Indie rocker Owen Pallett puts his violin through something similar to one of these halfway through his song "Lewis takes action". Look up a live version, as it sounds great with the violin

  • 6:27 to 6:40 extremely cool!!!

  • you talk too much. play the guitar!!!!

  • @andreastrato

Haha... This video was made in summer of '09. I didn't know how to edit out the "ummms" and "uhhhhs" at the time. But do I talk too much? Yes.

  • @penguinrock it's a complex pedal, a demo without explanation would suck.

  • your fav setting that you use at 6:11 is what Omar from The Mars Volta uses on the intro to the track roulette dares...

  • Is this stereo, can you use two amps with this?

  • @seventhsamuel

It isn't stereo, but you can use the Audio Out and Carrier Out simultaneously into different amps. Watch out, the Carrier Out is LOUD.

  • @penguinrock

Can you use the audio and carrier out with two amps simultaneously?

Can you make a video demonstrating how?

  • 6:30..... my mind is blown

  • I want one so bad! I would never get bored!!!

  • lol @ your explorer -> pitbull head

  • 2:20 i want one!!!

  • Hi, i am going to buy a ring mod. frequency analizer or save up for this one.

Have you heard a ehx ring mod? If you did, can you say which you like more?

  • @GaudyPersoneNonGrate

I have not had a chance to play with an EHX Frequency Analyzer. Those things are hard to find! I'm certain, though that the Moogerfooger is more versatile with its animation control and CV options.

  • Was the FreqBox doing anything for the first chunk of the video? (up until about 8:45-9:00 when you switched stuff around)

  • @baughskeet

Nope, it's off the whole time until I had to turn it on for the Envelope Out on the FreqBox to work. (Mix down)

  • btw lmao "I don't need that to sound like a ray gun." :D

  • Comment removed

  • iwish there was a real use for this in actual music

  • @not2stupidguitar It's called STUDIO.

  • @baughskeet no im trying to say something bad im just saying id like somebody to use these effects in a record label and have it fit well with a legit song

  • @not2stupidguitar

I've received a lot of comments on this pedal with the argument, "It's not musical because it's not playing a note." The point of this piece of gear is create new timbres to work with. As far as Ring Modulation sound samples go, a couple of my favorites are "Backlit" by Isis, and "Dreaming" (a Blondie cover) by The Smashing Pumpkins. I'm sure The Locust use it as well, but it would be too difficult to pick out against the Voyager synth already strewn about over their songs.

  • @not2stupidguitar gotcha. thought u were doggin the moogs, man! ha! ;)

  • @not2stupidguitar josh homme uses it and so does omar rodriguez, and john frusciante, and adrain belew just to name a few

  • @not2stupidguitar try listening to some Brainiac, Vincent Come on Down is a good starting point.

ring mod in all its noise rock/indie punk glory.

  • @not2stupidguitar there is. what do you call actual music? does it not sound RRRROCK enough for you?

  • very interesting ! there is a lot of possibilities

  • i wish i had 300 dollars to spend on one pedal.. that thing is beastly. it's definitely on my "Buy This" list.

  • If I get one of these, I would definitely use this in a song.

  • The sounds I'm looking for start at about 2:00, Those are the classic ring mod tones you hear from McLaughlin, Coryell, Beck and Jan Hammer.

  • this is like the ringshifter plug in on logic pro

  • Please make a video of you playing some sweep arpeggios in your favorite setting. I'm considering purchasing this item, and I would like to see how those sound on it. Thanks!

  • @N1V3K0141

I wish I could sweep pick! Sorry, I can't help you with this... (That would be worthwhile for me to develop, I'm now in a metal band.)

  • @penguinrock Ah :( Thanks anyways! Some tips on it, start with just three strings, and, palm mute down on each string right before you pick the next note. Practice just going one direction at a time. Then try to combine them. I actually find it easiest to observe the scale and start by strumming a lower note at first then hammering on the regular first note for the scale, then sweeping. Also, hold the pick closer to the neck than normal. Hope it helps! But I'll be getting this modulator soon!

  • Listen to Drive Like Jehu at all?

They're more feedback based for noise, but still some pretty crazy (and amazing) stuff!

  • @natathon1979

Gosh, that's a name I haven't heard in a LONG time... I never checked them out when it seemed like they were way more popular... in... 2001? Never too late to start.

  • @penguinrock Definitely check them out! They released their last album "Yank Crime" in 94, but broke up shortly after in 95.

They're really interesting technically, but maintain this aura of intensity. In that post-hardcore world they seemed( to me at least) to have set themselves aside and forged their own path.

  • @natathon1979

Oh geez, I didn't realize DLJ went that far back. I'll definitely look into it, thanks.

  • @aetmusic

I think it's great because it's NOT true bypass; it warms up your tone. The only way to get around this would be to put it in a true-bypass switcher.

  • great demo, thanks!

  • "isnt that just a really expensive tremelo pedal?"

    haha

this is a great pedal. the best ring mod out there imo

  • At 6.26 you were so close to playing the opening to Roulette Dares (Haunt Of) by The Mars Volta. DO IT

  • As a person who loves to make crazy sounds with my pedals I should really be into a band that incorporates so many weird noises and effects into its music... But I'm just not a fan of The Mars Volta. I will forever enjoy At The Drive-In more.

  • @penguinrock both of those bands are awesome. but i love both of them for different reasons. omar rodriguez-lopez is one of my favorite guitarists.

  • Endless possibilities for this pedal holy cow, I cant believe it

    AWESOME DEMO DUDE

  • 8:50 sounded like a distorted sitar.

  • sweet pedal. how much does it retail at?

  • NO!

  • This is the whammy killer!

  • An expression pedal input on that frequency knob would be sweet!!!

  • it has inputs for exp pedals to control anything on hte pedal with a knob :D (fequency, etc)

  • Can this moog be used as a simple tremolo?

And how is it, compared to a "normal" tremolo, like the fulltone or catalinbread or boss?

  • Turn the LFO Amount knob all the way down, turn the right-side rocker switch to "Lo", and you'll get tremolo. The Frequency knob controls the rate of the trem. The Moog's warmth KILLS the Boss TR-2 (I've owned at least a couple of them in the past). The Fulltone Supa-Trem is a great piece of gear, but the Mooger Ring Mod gives you more sound options in the way that the LFO and/or the Carrier In jack on the back can cause the pedal to do some wacky stuff.

    I hope this helps.

  • 6:12 sounds like "roulette dares" from mars volta

  • Omar Rodriguez-Lopez uses this pedal in Roulette Dares, so your statement makes total sense. ;)

  • actually its a really good pedal especially when you when you start messing around with it you get some really cool noises

  • what i really meant with this comment was that this dude is making us a favor by teaching us how the pedal works because many people dont have the money to buy pedals to c if they are good or not

(at least that is my experience) and with this video you can educate yourself before you spend your money.

didnt mean to offend :( i actually love the pedal

  • Is there any pedals other than this that can create that tremolo sound at 4:35, when its speeding up and slowing down?

  • Lightfoot labs goatkeeper, and the empress tap tremolo. Those are the ones that I know of. The Goatkeeper is the trem to end your search for trems though.

  • This is the first non-vendor demo I have come across that actually explains what the hell the thing does instead of boasting one's bome-brewed noise du jour. Extremely helpful and well done!

  • Seriously, this unit can do polyphonic ONLY on tremelo type oscilations. This is a monophonic filter trigger for experienced players to micmic synth tones. Listen to what Jeff Beck does with one. They can be musical but they are hard to dial in. A EH Microsynth or a Digitech SynthWah are easier to use and more musical. You Tube Vids on this unit do not do it justice. Get a killer fat tone and track this filter under it to give it a snyth effect, J. Beck does killer stuff with his for many years.

  • Nobody cares about your old ass opinions... and why do you keep commenting on 'young' players? What the hell are you talking about? Do you have some sixth age-sensing sense? Not all 'experienced' (i.e. old) players want to sound like old players, a lot are actually still advancing music.

  • やりおる

  • Multiple note tracking is called polyphony. The freqbox is monophonic. Nice demo! Thanks for taking the time to properly show and explain the features and sounds of this pedals.

  • A great video, watching it again, nothing to add, but to suggest: LFO square wave = ambulance; sine wave = UFO ?

  • Reminds a bit to Matt Bellamy's sounds

    Thank you very much dude!

  • i wish these we're cheaper, im only 15 and can't think of any way to get funds for one

  • I'm 24 and in the same boat, don't feel bad. lol

  • try ebay or your local guitar shops used sections... you can get a bargin a lot of the time.

  • is it possible to get a "alvin & the chipmunks" type of tone out of this unit. with exagerated harmonics?

  • I'd go with a pitch shifting pedal, try the Boss PS-5 Super Shifter or a Digitech Whammy, and set it for one or two octaves up.

  • your talking about Battles right?haha

  • The singer is a crook, whoooOOOoa.

    Great band.

  • Great demo, I'm excited to get one of these.

  • Thanks for this demo. I bought my moog ring mod second hand and it doesn't do hardly any of this stuff, even when i copy these settings. I've been playing guitar/using effects for 12 years and i seriously think that it's broken. Penguinrock, do you know of any common problems with this pedal? I'd greatly appreciate any advice

  • Oh man, I probably couldn't help you with a broken pedal... You should call up Moog Music with your issue(s), I hear they deliver excellent customer service over the phone. The rate knob on my MuRF pedal is a little shifty but I haven't been bothered by it enough to call.

Sorry I couldn't be of help!

  • this very good demo cheers for posting it

this is just the pedal i have been looking for

  • Thanks alot for stealing my long term idea to post a vid like this on YouTube :D But seriously, this is the best MF-102 demo I've seen so far, hats off, you're the man! And thanks for the FreqBox VC tip, must test that as soon as I can...

  • Thanks to your video, I couldn't resist ordering one. So thanks man.

  • I just wished you would some more stuff on the tremolo part.

  • Appreciated... There's only so much I could fit into a ten-minute long video, and at the time I made it, I hadn't figured out a few basic video-editing tricks to shorten the length. If you can get your hands on one, use your imagination!

  • nice demo!

    2'19 it's FM (frequency modulation)

  • Thanks! I'm trying to get better at describing things properly instead of just turning on my camera and rambling...

  • what patch cables are you using to connect your pedals?

  • Just regular quarter-inch instrument cables, George L's cable kit, to be exact. Nothing TRS.

  • does anyone want a trick thats not in this video? you can make Shuffle Tremolo by putting Mix:6, Freq: a little below 120, Ammount: 1, Rate, Doesn't Matter.

  • A variation of what's shown at 4:21.

  • exactly! :)

  • you should get payed for your demos. very informative!! im now going to buy one

  • Thanks dude! Er... Moog Music were actually kind enough to send some swag my way because of this!

  • really? how much, if it isnt too personal to ask?

  • Also, if you hook the ring modulator up with a delay pedal and play the harmonics on your guitar, you get this cool tabla-esque effect.

  • hey which EB vol pedal u using for the expression pedal??

  • That Ernie Ball pedal is just for volume, not as an expression pedal for anything.

  • i have one of these. really fun pedal. how much did yours cost?

  • I used to work for a certain major musical instrument retailer and got it discounted...

  • nice. im ganna try some these setting used.
