  • Regarding steowe and 58 pianos' comments, while it is common practice to play traditional piano literature from memory (a practice only started in the mid-19th century by Clara Schumann), contemporary works are most commonly played with the score. I have produced 20 contemporary piano concerts in the last 7 years with some of the best contemporary players in New York, and none of them memorized their pieces.

  • In case you two hadn't noticed, this is YouTube, not Carnegie Hall. Yes, she should have it memorized for a recital. But in the meantime, you know nothing of her circumstances, and at least she played it. And while "Dr. Owen" is obviously an important person to you, steowe, the rest of us don't know him (or her), so until he personally tells Amy she can't play her recital piece if it's not memorized, you just practice your own pieces so Dr. Owen doesn't criticize you.

  • all solos must be memorized or dont play them at all dr owen

  • This is a personal quirk of mine but it bothers me when someone plays a solo piano piece and uses the sheet music. It is ok to use the music in chamber works but I feel a solo work should be memorized.
