They killed Netscape by copying it and giving Internet Explorer for free. They then let IE sit largly unchanged until Firefox came along with a bunch of new ideas. MS copied those ideas into IE. They've even copied Google Chrome's "incognito browsing" mode in IE8.

it would make more sense to just push an update out instead of pulling all the versions off the shelves, but at this point, who knows?
