We can deal with rockets and dreams

But reality, what does it mean

    Ain't nothing said

    'Cause freddies dead"

  • Hey Boomerang905, I agree so much with what you posted about those great singers who died in somewhat obscurity or the lack of respect that they received after their death, it's a damn shame! I think of people also like Phillipe' Wynn of the Spinners who when he died only 8 people showed up at his funeral! The list goes on and on. Curtis Mayfield was the man, we owe so much to those talented legends.

  • @patriotsdesign Wonderful words and thoughts. We wonder how this happens, still it does. I did not know that Phillipe's passing was so unnoticed...I remember being so sorry. Curtis touched me so personally being a Chicago guy. And he was one of the best singer's I've ever heard. And it's strange I saw one of the people that wrote a few songs for him, Jerry Butler's brother, Billy. He lives in my Community. Peace : )

  • is he actually referring to someone? freddie who

  • this song makes me wanna put my sunshades on in the middle of winter.

  • This was Hip Hop before Hip Hop was Hip Hop....Listen to the lyrics...real Hip Hop if you can detect it talks about real shit such as this!!!

  • Fucckin A!

  • I went to the movies to see this film when it came out, then went back the following night - to listen to the soundtrack. Every track on that album is a classic, and this is probably the best of them all. An amazing piece of music from a truly great artist

  • 8 People don't know Freddie's Dead

  • i always thought freddy's dead was best cut of this masterpiece/album. curtis mayfield did at least THREE truly great movie soundtracks, superfly, claudine and sparkle. i dont think he gets the credit he deserves for doing that. as much as i respect folks like john williams and quincy who write orchestral music. curtis is more like rogers and hammerstein writing lyrics related to the story. he did this for three movies in the 70's rather rare, i think.

  • @persebra FOUR. 'Short Eyes' is a masterpiece!

  • This song remind you of summer? Anyone?

  • that HEY HEY give me goosebumps

  • can you imagine the eyes on the audience wen they seen this guy grab the mic and sing lik a poet to the streets

  • PIMPIN!

  • One word,,,,,,,Classic!

  • wish my name was freddie, then I'd have this song played at my funeral

  • Hell yeah! Im 24 and in New Zealand.. I love this stuff... Starting listing to this after watching the movie... Should check out 1814, there music is banging!! But nothing can compare to the legend of mr curtis here..

  • See most young folks don't know NUTHIN' bout this. See the comment by Elisa4Realz? Anybody born after the 80's only heard this on the "Boondocks" whenever a Pimp Named Slickback appears in the sketch, proving that when they (folks born after the 80's) belch, all you can smell is Similac.....

  • @Footsniffer51 (sigh)

Next time you wanna mention someone in a comment, you might wanna put the little "@" in front of their name.

I actually DO listen to Curtis Mayfield, my favorite songs being "We The People Who Are Darker than Blue" and "Make Me Believe in You." But yeah, the Boondocks WAS where I first heard this song, so that's what I'm going to think of when I hear it, and I don't see why that's such a bad thing.

Have a little more faith in today's youth, yeah? Thanks[:

  • @Elisa4Realz Well finally a comment that makes structural and syntax sense. Thank you for your response.

  • why do ppl not make music like this anymore

    17 and listening to Curtis

  • listen to this ridin in my brothers 75 Eldorado

  • 8 people disliked this? Damn - I guess they wanna be like Fred.

  • A Pimp Named Slickback's theme song.

  • @Elisa4Realz ok yea

  • Freddy's not dead he's the superfly pusher man, Curtis Mayfield is the sh_t for real.

  • I used to ride shotgun in my buddy's 82 Cadi El Dorado with 2 blunts passed among 5 of us every Saturday Night!

  • I blow this while rollin in my 63 linc. Cont. W/ suicide. So damn gangsta

  • Never will be an equal to this cat.

  • @soluran

You said it. "It", being the truth.

    Mr Mayfield, you are MISSED!

  • keep them in your heart .

  • i know i sound like my dad but when i hear this then turn on the radio i want to vomit

  • "My name is A Pimp Named Slickback, And I believe I may have misplaced some merchandise at this residence."

  • @Serenade92x ahaha foreal

  • you can't help but drive slow to this

  • THERE'S IS NO EQUAL TO THIS MAN. RIP.

  • Teddy's dead... :(

  • Low and behold I went to a funeral of a Freddie back in 1973, they played this song....that is exactly what I said. But this is such a unique and cool soundtrack. Mr. Mayfield should have gotten a Grammy for this as well as for Claudine. I was born in Chicago, same as where Curtis was raised. Saw him and the Impressions perform at the old Regal when I was a teen. Such Chicago cool, so sharp. Newcomers should take notes from this man. Nuff said! :D Peace.

  • @boomerang905 Marvin Gaye didn't win a Grammy award till 1983. Alltime classic albums like 'What's Going On', 'Trouble Man', 'Let's Get It On', 'I want You' and 'Here, My Dear' won nothing. Many great artists didn't win Grammys. Diana Ross has never won a Grammy! That doesn't even make sense. So as far as I'm concerned the Grammys are not a true barometer for gauging the greatness of an artist like Curtis Mayfield, who left behind one of the greatest legacies of 20th century recorded music.

  • @bolder2009 It was just a thought at the time. You're quite right in Awards not being true gauges of what is this or that. Curtis just seemed particularly unique and talented to me and admitted himself that the Impressions were overlooked sometimes because they weren't the 'pretty boy' types. I loved their charisma and personality; forget looks. Hollywood also had many, many great stars who were not recognized with Oscars either.....I could name about 200. peace.

  • @boomerang905 Curtis was a one off! No doubt about that. My point is that there have been so many great artists overlooked by award ceremonies like the Grammys or as you rightly said, the Oscars. I can think of many performances that were worthy of 'best actor/actress', etc. To a large degree, its subjective. I don't know the criteria by which the winners are voted for. It seems to be governed by politics and the politics of commerce. The media also plays a big role in this.

  • "FRIDAY" Its angel dust homes

  • So uhhh.... Homestuck brought me here :P

  • Bitch I hope you got the money to cover this little vacation you've been taking.

  • @philanderadriaan :BOONDOCKS FTW!!! "A pimp named Slickback XD!"

  • @philanderadriaan BITCH YOU GOT 45 SECONDS AND I'M LEAVING

  • I listened to this whole song for the first time today and besides the funky groove its a very deep song that can still be related too in todays time I'm 20 but I can't wait to bump this in the car

  • its angel dust homes

  • Heyheeey :D

  • fuck hector

  • before you shoot up remember....freddies dead

  • @mustbejames1 before you smoke up, crack up, meth up, Remember FREDDIE'S DEAD!

  • the fat man is dead

  • This was the orignal "Street Songs" album, pre-Rick James. These songs go hard. Rappers still sample this stuff. Curtis is awesome!

  • @sherwinfitz I agree. 'Street Songs' was the 'Superfly' of the 80's. Rick did his thing!

  • what up big perm...i mean big worm

  • I used to drive a Neon. Everytime i threw this on, it somehow turned into a '72 Eldorado...

  • @oskamadison That's funny as HELL. LOL LOL LOL

  • @oskamadison shit same here ecept i was imagining a 1974 dodge monaco

  • @oskamadison I used to throw this on.... until I took an arrow to the knee...

  • @Taud That joke is overused, we're trying trying to appreciate music. and even after that if it really happened you would still be able to turn this on.

  • @Bensim44 Cry me a river build a bridge and get the hell over it princess, my comment wasnt @ you, dont cry, its not even your video post....

  • @Taud Very mature.

  • @Bensim44 Yeah and you gave me the time out of your day, I guess you sank to my level...

  • @Taud Listen nerd boy, go back to your room and waste the rest of your shitty life on that stupid game saying arrow to the knee to another nerd.

  • @Bensim44 Yeah and you gave me the time out of your day, I guess you sank to my level... don't be mad, You're no more mature than I am my comment wasn't even @ you in the first place and it upsets you this much : )

    Funny guy, really

  • I dedicated this song to Moamar Gaddafi. Just think of all the bad things he did to his own peoples.

  • @DavidMWalker58 this song is too awesome for that ass hat, and his misery was not his woman and things : P

Or, just go ahead and troll politics everywhere if you've got nothing better to do. Whatever.

  • @wanderlustwarrior sorry i got my assholes incorrect but Obama could fix the problem... i just thought it was a funny idea that these guys (Mayfield and Heron) both saw space exploration as unimportant in relation to the problems of the black community in the 60's. sorry i had an original thought hah ahah

  • @WentMillerGal15

you're a fag for thinking that, stupid bitch!

  • Smoke Dogg Baby....Remember That Shit...I'VE BEEN SMOKIN' SINCE I WAS 2!

  • True story, back in the day one of the current hosts on WROR in Boston used to work in Maine and call in requests for this dedicated to people in the Obituaries named Fred.

  • 4 dog::

  • Such reality, in this message.

  • we can deal with rokets and dreams but reality, what does it mean?

  • Curtis Mayfield, Barry White and Issac Hayes all gone in the last 12 years...Who could possibly replace all that talent??? Sad.....

  • @GiacomoBerto Simply No one

  • @GiacomoBerto Raphael Saadiq is a great start....but the road is looking wary.

  • @GiacomoBerto LOL!!!! I FEEL U THOUGH!!

  • @GiacomoBerto Well said. We're pretty much lost on that one. And if you noticed, these beautiful, talented, gifted men died and people hardly made a noise. Barry died when Luther got sick and they mourned Luther AS IF he was dead. They overshadowed poor Isaac with Bernie Mac..with all due respect I'd been a fan of Isaac's much longer. And my Chicago Prince Mr. Mayfield lay paralyzed from that stage accident years before and died with hardly anyone saying a word. RIP all.

  • @GiacomoBerto Kesha, Minaj, and Katie Perry, of course. (Joking)

  • Awwwwwwwww suky suky now! (Puts on Foxy Brown afro, ready to kick the ass of The Man!)

  • Congo's in this song.....Crankin...!!!!!!DAMN

  • sounds so different from the (live) video kind of odd really

  • R.I.P Freddie kruger

  • ...another junkie dead. I don't want that played at my funeral....I'd rather that I was one of the ones that got away.

  • Sicx - Back Door

  • old school

  • this is quite possibly the best music on a song ever!!

  • dammit i just passed this album up for 5 bucks at bookmans now its gone!!!! fuck

  • One of the Truly great artist's, listing to any of his songs makes me happy & @ peace with myself & the world. perhaps a few politicians should listen to his music more often! and if you hear his duets with various female singers it's just Wow! love me baby! a shame to see him in a wheelchair after the accident on stage but he fought back & produced a fine album "New World Order" Curtis a Legend!!

  • r&b artists can be faulted a lot of times for limiting the subjects of their music about love and dancing, but when the really master artists like curtis, gaye and wonder touch on serious topics, it goes thermonuclear.

  • All I want is some peace of mind with a little love I'm trying to find.

  • Comment removed

  • Ah...elements of Erykah Badu's Master Teacher in this... starting @3:04

  • 3 Justin Bieber fans disliked this.

  • All I want is some peace of mind, with a little love I'm trying to find. This could be such a beautiful world with a wonderful girl.

  • Pure genius from one of the greatest artist ever! This song is soooo relevant in to todays' society. Just listen to the words, the song, and the sound. There is heartache and pain in Curtis Mayfields voice as he sings this song.

  • Yes, A Classic!

  • all time classic

  • curtis was the man this is one of the realist songs of all time curtis always had a message in his songs

  • i do believe there was another version made for south park called "Kenny's dead"

  • cnt listen 2 dis w/o thinking of friday

  • i wish my name was freddie, then I'd have this song played at my funeral

  • THA LIFE MAN...

  • curtis never did recieve his propers while he lived he was always protesting in his music.do you know white folks wouldnt play we are winners on the southern radio stations.the lyrics say 'we are true from the good black dirt,we are winners'now that we have some rights blacks want to kill off their own race, alot of young people need to talk to their grandparents and learn.everyday on the news some black man has been killed.when will you youngens learn

  • @sweettooth471 Amen!
