The70's..... such a beautiful time for black culture & music....., the message was love, Good Times, What's Happening, The Jeffersons, Flip Wilson, Sanford and Son, Naturals were cut tight, Soul Train Saturday Mornings, J5, Muhammad Ali, SOUL Brotha, Right on!!!....Shaft, Foxy Brown, Super Fly, Ice Cream truck in the hood, Afro pick with the Black Power salute on the end....BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL!!....Lets get it back!! One Luv!!
Hey Boomerang905, I agree so much with what you posted about those great singers who died in somewhat obscurity or the lack of respect that they received after their death, it's a damn shame! I think of people also like Phillipe' Wynn of the Spinners who when he died only 8 people showed up at his funeral! The list goes on and on. Curtis Mayfield was the man, we owe so much to those talented legends.
@patriotsdesign Wonderful words and thoughts. We wonder how this happens, still it does. I did not know that Phillipe's passing was so unnoticed...I remember being so sorry. Curtis touched me so personally being a Chicago guy. And he was one of the best singer's I've ever heard. And it's strange I saw one of the people that wrote a few songs for him, Jerry Butler's brother, Billy. He lives in my Community. Peace : )
I went to the movies to see this film when it came out, then went back the following night - to listen to the soundtrack. Every track on that album is a classic, and this is probably the best of them all. An amazing piece of music from a truly great artist
i always thought freddy's dead was best cut of this masterpiece/album. curtis mayfield did at least THREE truly great movie soundtracks, superfly, claudine and sparkle. i dont think he gets the credit he deserves for doing that. as much as i respect folks like john williams and quincy who write orchestral music. curtis is more like rogers and hammerstein writing lyrics related to the story. he did this for three movies in the 70's rather rare, i think.
Hell yeah! Im 24 and in New Zealand.. I love this stuff... Starting listing to this after watching the movie... Should check out 1814, there music is banging!! But nothing can compare to the legend of mr curtis here..
See most young folks don't know NUTHIN' bout this. See the comment by Elisa4Realz? Anybody born after the 80's only heard this on the "Boondocks" whenever a Pimp Named Slickback appears in the sketch, proving that when they (folks born after the 80's) belch, all you can smell is Similac.....
Next time you wanna mention someone in a comment, you might wanna put the little "@" in front of their name.
I actually DO listen to Curtis Mayfield, my favorite songs being "We The People Who Are Darker than Blue" and "Make Me Believe in You." But yeah, the Boondocks WAS where I first heard this song, so that's what I'm going to think of when I hear it, and I don't see why that's such a bad thing.
Have a little more faith in today's youth, yeah? Thanks[:
Low and behold I went to a funeral of a Freddie back in 1973, they played this song....that is exactly what I said. But this is such a unique and cool soundtrack. Mr. Mayfield should have gotten a Grammy for this as well as for Claudine. I was born in Chicago, same as where Curtis was raised. Saw him and the Impressions perform at the old Regal when I was a teen. Such Chicago cool, so sharp. Newcomers should take notes from this man. Nuff said! :D Peace.
@boomerang905 Marvin Gaye didn't win a Grammy award till 1983. Alltime classic albums like 'What's Going On', 'Trouble Man', 'Let's Get It On', 'I want You' and 'Here, My Dear' won nothing. Many great artists didn't win Grammys. Diana Ross has never won a Grammy! That doesn't even make sense. So as far as I'm concerned the Grammys are not a true barometer for gauging the greatness of an artist like Curtis Mayfield, who left behind one of the greatest legacies of 20th century recorded music.
@bolder2009 It was just a thought at the time. You're quite right in Awards not being true gauges of what is this or that. Curtis just seemed particularly unique and talented to me and admitted himself that the Impressions were overlooked sometimes because they weren't the 'pretty boy' types. I loved their charisma and personality; forget looks. Hollywood also had many, many great stars who were not recognized with Oscars either.....I could name about 200. peace.
@boomerang905 Curtis was a one off! No doubt about that. My point is that there have been so many great artists overlooked by award ceremonies like the Grammys or as you rightly said, the Oscars. I can think of many performances that were worthy of 'best actor/actress', etc. To a large degree, its subjective. I don't know the criteria by which the winners are voted for. It seems to be governed by politics and the politics of commerce. The media also plays a big role in this.
I listened to this whole song for the first time today and besides the funky groove its a very deep song that can still be related too in todays time I'm 20 but I can't wait to bump this in the car
@Taud That joke is overused, we're trying trying to appreciate music. and even after that if it really happened you would still be able to turn this on.

@GiacomoBerto Well said. We're pretty much lost on that one. And if you noticed, these beautiful, talented, gifted men died and people hardly made a noise. Barry died when Luther got sick and they mourned Luther AS IF he was dead. They overshadowed poor Isaac with Bernie Mac..with all due respect I'd been a fan of Isaac's much longer. And my Chicago Prince Mr. Mayfield lay paralyzed from that stage accident years before and died with hardly anyone saying a word. RIP all.
One of the Truly great artist's, listing to any of his songs makes me happy & @ peace with myself & the world. perhaps a few politicians should listen to his music more often! and if you hear his duets with various female singers it's just Wow! love me baby! a shame to see him in a wheelchair after the accident on stage but he fought back & produced a fine album "New World Order" Curtis a Legend!!
r&b artists can be faulted a lot of times for limiting the subjects of their music about love and dancing, but when the really master artists like curtis, gaye and wonder touch on serious topics, it goes thermonuclear.

curtis never did recieve his propers while he lived he was always protesting in his music.do you know white folks wouldnt play we are winners on the southern radio stations.the lyrics say 'we are true from the good black dirt,we are winners'now that we have some rights blacks want to kill off their own race, alot of young people need to talk to their grandparents and learn.everyday on the news some black man has been killed.when will you youngens learn
I don't want to be the first to say anything, but do you hear that guitar work going on throughout this tune! Actually, throughout the whole album! GODDAMN!!!!!
