there is a brush tool that lets u drew freehand shapes, and you can change the colour of objects. just fixate the splatters to the sharp pointy bits. that should work.

Thats awesome. One question though, how do you make the conveyor belt tracks? I can't get the chain to loop round.

Attach four chains together around your drive wheels. Be sure to zoom in and delete the "fix" on one end of your belt (you'll see what I mean).
